Anne Shirley's Puff Sleeve Dress - Anne of Green Gables 

I loved marilla. She was so strict but loving. So conservative but understanding of youths desires. She was indeed a kindred spirit. Mattew was so wonderful you could not cry. Oh such heartbreak when he died.

The fact that Diana had a crush on Gilbert as well but knew he liked Anne so she supported Anne and him regardless of her own feelings! Diana was selfless!

The moment when Matthew hugs and kisses Anne makes me tear up. He really did love her, shy and retiring though he was.

I love this version more than any other version of Anne of Green Gables

I always wanted a friendship like Diana’s and Anne’s

"don't you like it?" "like it? its more exquisite than anything in the world." my heart just melted into chocolate.

We all need a Matthew in our lives.

We were really fortunate to have watched these shows as children.

Nothing compares to this beautiful production of Anne of Green Gables. My family very much enjoyed gathering together to watch this.

When I was thirteen I met Mathew- Richard Farnsworth at Cowboy poetry in Elko Nevada. I heard he was there and my dad took me to get his autograph. I could not have been more thrilled! He was so shy and generous just like on the film. Mathew and Marilla are two of the dearest characters in literature. Kindred Spirits. Dear true solid folk.

"How could you wish that...person a Merry Christmas?!" "I'm sorry, I'm Canadian, it was instinctive!"

Megan Follows was born to be Anne. And then because of this gem of a masterpiece of a production and depiction of the historic tale, it leads you to realize that each and everyone of the cast were perfect and born for their roles too. The same for the producer, writers, crew, etc.

The scene fro 1:21 when Anne thanks Matthew for the dress his such a superb example of great acting. The love that they display for each other during that is just beautiful. Still brings a tear to my eye.

Matthew Cuthbert has the biggest heart in the world 😢❤

Marilla:(Commenting the "puff" sleeves) They're ridiculous, you'll have to turn sideways to get through the doors. Marilla:(Annoyed) Twenty pounds of brown sugar. Marilla was my favorite character.

I love how Mathew bought a rake and 20 lb. of brown sugar while working up the courage to ask about a dress for Anne. And of course, the scene where Anne thanks him for the dress always brings tears. Love this film❤️

Those puffs are bigger than my future ;(

BEST. ANNE. EVER. And an unbeatable supporting cast, especially Farnsworth and Dewhurst.

When Matthew died was one of the sadest moments ever on tv 😭

I love how the off the rack dress was obviously oversized, untailored and out of scale to Anne's frame. It was clever and added to the visuals/concept of the scenes. This was a great production of AOGG.

When Anne thanks Matthew for the dress, I can't help but cry. One of the greatest scenes in the many great scenes of the entire show. Matthew and Merilla were PERFECTLY cast. 30 years later and Anne is still one of my favorite movies. Just perfect.

"Brown sugar indeed" Something about the way Marilla says that makes me laugh uncontrollably 😂😂😂

Matthew was such a wonderful character, I cried buckets when he died. Such a sweet soul, he loved Ann so much.

Productions like this one made my growing up have moments of comfort and cosiness. It's so pure compared to what we have now.

I basically like every adaption I've seen of Anne of Green Gables, but nothing compare to this one! And this is the only Gilbert that still makes my heart flutter, he is perfect!

I can watch Anne Of Green Gables until I turn into dust! Loved this miniseries and Sullivan Entertainment knew how to do it right! From casting, cinematography, to location! Heck even the puffed sleeves!

I love every Anne of Green able show!!!! I was like her in so many ways. I became an "orphan" of sorts when my mother died. I was shuffled around relatives who truly didn't want me. I got hand me downs whereas my mother was a beautiful seamstress & copied any new fashions for me. I was 13 & left to the mercies of different aunts or uncles. My grandmother bought my youngest aunt, who was 3 years older than me, anything she wanted . She was dainty like my mother was & I was just tall & skinny so her dresses couldn't be lengthened enough for me to wear. My precious grandaddy went to bat for me sometimes. He would slip me money & tell me to go buy something special for a school dance. I loved that sweet old man with all my heart. He would end up in a fight with my grandmother until he'd had enough. He never raised his voice to anybody, not even her. He'd signal me to meet him under our tree where we went most ever night & he actually listened to me. So Matthew reminded me of my grandfather & Morilla reminds me of my grandmother. When I got engaged he gave me $20 to buy myself a wedding dress. It wasn't very pretty at all but it was what I could afford. My grandmother even picked my boyfriends & told me it was time I got married & got out on my own. I did just what she said. I did not love him but he loved me so we stayed married 38 years in a strange loveless married, had 3 amazing children I'm so thankful for but I finally got out on my own, the first time ever! I wasn't looking for another man at all but God sent me one, lol. We dated 10 years, both had bad marriages & didn't intend on getting married. After 10 years God really took control of us & we ended up getting married in 2012. He's a very Godly man & we live a Christian marriage & now I hate we wasted 10 years to marry but it was all in God's plan. Thank you all who post any of the Anne books.I listen at night through earbuds, they help me sleep.

It's so cool how Anne always has someone to love her and comfort her. It's also cool how she made a bosom friend to grow up and be happy with.

If I read the book and watch the series a thousand times, I will always cry at the Puffy Sleeves Dress scene. Matthew was an angel and so was Marilla, even though she acted tough. "Brown sugar indeed."

My grandparents gave me the best gift ever during jr high. They took me to see the real green gables. My friend and I were obsessed with all the books and movies and were picking out all the spots.

"20 pounds of brown sugar!" My sisters and I loved watching this series as children. We still randomly use that line by Marilla 😂

It's a gorgeous gown! Although I think a pale minty green shade may have suited Anne better; it would have complemented her Titian tresses.

My only qualm with this is that in the book he asked Miss Rachel Lynde to make the dress (and she was delighted to do so). Other than that, absolutely lovely interpretation.

Reasons to envy Anne: 1. Her exquisite beauty (as played by Megan). 2. Diana. 3. Gilbert (although she didn't appreciate him for years). 4. Her affection for Jane Andrews, "a jewel"; I had 2 classmates called Jane, and there was nothing jewel-like about either of them! 5. Her imagination: she has delightful daydreams, such as being a frost-fairy.

WHAT A GREAT SCENE BETWEEN,ANNE AND MATTHEW! SUCH A LOVE FOR EACH OTHER. THAT DRESS MEANT EVERYTHING TO ANNE,MATTHEW WAS SO HAPPY FOR ANNE .HE MADE SURE HE WAS GOING TO GET ANNE THAT DRESS.❤️❤️THE PERFECT CAST FOR A TIMELESS STORY, OF LIFE!!! BOB

Megan Follows was absolutely perfect in this role. When I read "Anne of Green Gables" I'ts almost like I was watching this movie, that's how influential it is.

I loved Richard Farnsworth, he kind of reminds you of a grandfather that you never had.

Matthew reminds me so much of my grandpa. He had a stroke last year, but thankfully, he turned out okay after a day or two. This scene and this movie as a whole makes me cry so hard because it makes me think of him. I'm glad my aunt introduced me to this when I was younger.

This just became my favorite version of Anne of Green Gables. Anne with an E, to many surprises, I actually quite like, because it has a more realistic aspect of it, but this version here just brings my imagination of the book to life. This Anne is so incredibly charming, and brings the character intended in Montgomery’s book to life.

savage Gilbert just ignores her at 4.14 but does however acknowledge Diana 😅

I love this Matthew Cuthbert. He reminds me of my father-in-law, sparkling blue eyes, reserved, quiet, so loving and eager to give to the ones he loved. Every time I see this Matthew I see my Father-in-law.

I met Richard Farnsworth about a month before he chose to leave this world. He was on a cruise with his beautiful fiancee. I was a meet and greeter at the pier when he was looking for his luggage when I recognised him and told him how wonderful I thought he was as Matthew Cuthbert - he was very gracious and sweet but was suffering from bone cancer.

I believe Matthews death is one of my first heartbreaks

Out of any other Anne of Green Gables, this one is my favorite. Even when Anne and Diana grew up in the Anne of Green Gables the Sequal and Anne of Green Gables the Continuing Story, they both played really well in these 3 movies

We have the box set after watching it on PBS several times. When my husband's mom came for a visit we played this for her in Spanish and I didn't miss a thing because I knew the dialogue so well. 😀 She enjoyed it and was amused that I followed along. Marc explained that we'd watched it many times. They are both gone but even alone it's a very happy memory. ❤

This is the definitive version of 'Anne of Green Gables'. Great adaptation of the text, beautiful cinematography, & a cast of rare talent--all the characters are so finely etched. There's something special about the tone as well: this adaptation captures the magic of human kindness & decency, without being maudlin or saccharine.

I always think this scene is one that shows just uow much Matthew loves Anne

Thank you for posting this - i'm a lifelong Anne fan and I cried watching the scene where she thanks Matthew - Megan Follows interpreted it so perfectly i couldn't have imagined it better. Those eyes! And yes - the dress is hilarious. I have a feeling the producers put it there as a comic element... I don't recall the dance scene in the book though?

A classic in our family, my two daughters LOVE this movie, have their own copies and still watch over and over…they are now 40! Loved all the characters as if we knew them personally, my youngest cried when the actor that played Gilbert died… the whole cast was spot on….Thank You.

My Sister and I dressed up as Anne and Diana since I have red hair and this is my fave movie I made the costumes myself it was so awesome it being my first time sewing something big like that

After watching "Anne of Green Gables" that follows the book to the "T" I can't stand to see any other re-make that will be better than this one. It is the same as the first "Superman" 1978 with Christopher Reeves. I can't imagine another individual that can fill his shoes as he did.
