Brimming with the same reverence for nature as her fiction, Annie Proulx’s new book is a compact history of the world's wetlands and the vitally important yet little understood role they play in preserving the environment-by storing the carbon emissions that greatly contribute to climate change. Charting the history of human interaction with these crucial natural resources, Proulx lays bare the frightening reality of wetland destruction and what it means for the planet and our survival.
The New York Public Library holds Proulx’s papers, and the event will begin with a short talk about them by Carolyn Vega, Curator of the Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature. And come early for a one-night-only display of her materials at the back of the room.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Annie Proulx is the author of nine books, including the novels The Shipping News and Barkskins, and the story collection Close Range. Her many honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner award. Her story “Brokeback Mountain,” which originally appeared in The New Yorker, was made into an Academy Award-winning film. Fen, Bog, and Swamp is her second work of nonfiction. She lives in New Hampshire.
