The shimmer is basically like a sci-fi version of target. You go in for what feels like a few minutes but it’s hours and when you finally make it out you’re not sure of what happened or what you actually bought.

THE HURTS If you’re interested, recently I’ve been on this theoretical scenario of mine, maybe others have theorized this as well, in which our existence is threatened by a virus that preys on our Subconscious. Contagious in a manner beyond our level of human intelligence that not only would we be left without a cure, but rendered unable to even be researched by medical science since the virus would have absolutely 0% structure, the paradoxical phenomena meaning that technically this virus has no matter of existence, yet still remains to be present in our reality. Maybe somehow it seems paradoxical to our reality is that the virus has planted itself as a host in mankind’s Collective Unconscious.

It's not like those movies that pretend to have a meaning when in fact there is nothing there but an aimless or messy plot and you are rightfully left not understanding a thing such as Hold the Dark and to a lesser degree Black Mirror Bandersnatch. I watched the trailer before watching the movie and I still enjoyed the movie a ton! There are still good twists and scenes of mutation and beauty and the crazy ending not given away in the trailer. I reccomend this movie to anyone that is a fan of science fiction. Alex garland is great.

@@starkill3852 Yes, and Lena, but also the general inability of anyone to simply explain what they saw and experienced when questioned. Yes, everything was completely weird and alien, but one could say, _"it looked like a combination of multiple organisms",_ or _"this thing emulated me, mirrored my movements"_ etc. The total vagueness felt like an obvious plot device to maintain the mystery. When they were in the zone and saw the flora and fauna and wildlife, we heard detailed attempts to explain their transformation, but as soon as a team of scientists questioned them, all we got was, _"I don't know"._ I guess, arguably, given that Lena was not the original Lena by that stage, her obfuscation could have been a strategy to avoid identification. Perhaps, Bruce is right; the book explains it all.

Honestly people, if you haven't seen this yet, GO see it. It's one of the greatest films I've ever seen, and I've been thinking about it's nuanced and clever design for weeks. So well done. The perfect blend between realism and sci-fi ambiguity.

This film was on my watchlist for quite sometime, and it left me speechless after watching it. This is incredible and beautiful, left me speechless. I like films that are straight to the point, but these kinds of films that will leave you wondering and thinking, are my favorite ones. This is already one of my favorite films of its decade.

Definitely looks interesting and i'll definitely watch it, but the one issue I have with movies like this and others like Alien Covenant is basically these "scientists" enter these biohazard zones or alien environments totally exposed without any protective gear or hazmat suits, then end up getting infected. The whole plots of films like these seems rely on scientists making poor judgements.

Kentama Except in sci-fi films, they at least attempt to arrive with the correct equipment. Take The Thing for example. Each scientist isn’t dumb, they try to exploit the issue without risking their lives, and as far as I know, there’s little cliché. I still agree with you though, Kane from Alien could have been a lot more careful with his dumbass mind.

rutherford sr. customer support In the latest movie Alien Covenant as well as parts of the previous one Prometheus, these expert scientists literally land on an unexplored alien environment and instantly exit the ship in just plain everyday clothing, totally exposing themselves to an alien atmosphere, then going around touching everything, sniffing everything, drinking the water, eating some plants, without any testing or protective gear. And they expect you to be shocked that people were getting infected.

It's not an analogue synth It's probably a digital vst like omnisphere 2 or Diva - it could easily be emulated with any modern synth. It's not a sound effect either, it's a brass/bass lead in mono voicing.

I agree with you I just thought that moment when she was fighting with her clone and lost consciousness and wakes up again she became the shimmer version and clone looked like her. It looked like their identities have changed places and the human Lena burned with her love husband in the lighthouse..I might be wrong. what i took from it is, this being or alien, wants to experience and thus having meaning/purpose. it inevitably by its nature only changes things. it can't stop changing/mutating/evolving, and all it wants is to become what is around it to experience existence without ruining or changing it. the reason for it mirroring natalie portman is just that. it becomes. whether or not it chooses to become what it touches may be conscious, or just part of its make up is unclear, but she suggests that it didn't even know she was there. sadly, it must be destroyed for it'll change everything on earth into a vat of innate desires, and genetically scrambled life forms. was it carbon based? obviously not. it can become any form of matter. chaining together any molecule that could be imagined. its more like a biological computer that randomizes states. but phosphorous was enough to destroy it, so..

This movie is fantastic. I saw it twice in theaters, as well as multiple times since. The marketing team for this movie did a good job, but it was also an impossible job. Sure, everything in this trailer is in the film, and the story and tone is all accurately presented, and yet...it's also nothing like this, somehow. You just can't capture the true appeal and feel of this film in a trailer.

That thing freaked me out. At its first appearance when it broke through the fence it looked like a very large but otherwise normal bear and then when it was in the house with them its head was just...a skull with the skin peeled off???? For people ranting about why an all woman team was sent in without military assistance, the psychologist literally states that all the teams sent prior to theirs were male teams so they were trying out different options. Another point people nitpicked was why all of them had guns even though only one of them had prior military experience. Again the characters mention that they've been at the facility for quite sometime. They definitely received weapons and survival training in that time. Everything doesn't need to be spoonfed to the audience, though in the above cases they still were.

There was no data coming back from the shimmer, so it was not logical to conclude that an all female team would succeed as there is zero data to base such a decision on. Indeed at that time it was a *man* who had returned and survived. You might as well have sent a team of people with ginger hair according to your logic of "trying out different options" based on zero evidence. The point about guns is that they are civilian scientists. I'll remind you (again) that no data was coming back from the shimmer, sending civilians without a military escort is yet another illogical decision. Don't even get me started on the lack of haz-mat suits worn by so-called "expert" scientists after seeing the guy coming back and almost dying. For a film to work it requires some sort of internal logic, it is nothing to do with being spoon fed. This utterly fails on so many levels that it takes away suspension of belief.

except the previous expedition died/was sying of cancer mutation. WOmen are less prone to mutations because they have two X chromosomes. Besides, the book explains that the reason this was done was because there were MANY expeditions and by that point, they were just trying different options to see what works, shooting in the dark. Just adding any variable they could think of. Actually, in the book, they are forbidden recordin equipment and guns are restricted. It makes more sense there

I know there's a book so the information was already out there but this trailer disappointed me a bit. The first teaser only had the weird sci fi shit. I thought it was going to be more of an unknown entity similar to something like Solaris . I mean that is obviously apart of it but the whole monster thing is what really bums me out. Oysters Yeah it does remind me of Arrival but I enjoyed that movie so I don't mind. I feel it will be different enough that it will stand on its own.

I liked it too but that part with the alligator just bugged the shit out of me. How do you get dragged through a building, down into the water and thrashed around by a mutant 20 foot alligator and come back up totally unharmed with barely a hair out of place.

the screaming bear in this film was quite possibly the most terrifying and unsettling thing i have ever witnessed in my life. im 29 and not usualy scared of fuck all but my god that shit haunted me. had to pause the film go sit downstairs and had a little shittin panic attack.

This is an incredible film. And the weird thing is - it *feels* like the Universe. In the way mother! felt like Nature’s scream, Annihilation feels like something deeper, darker and more dangerous than we can perceive; it feels like a dance, like a liberation, like a fever dream. It feels like a rebirth.

I love this movie. It's not too heavy, but it still makes the audience think. It's deeply unsettling too, not only because of some of the scenes, but also because i feel like this movie talks about something we all have but ignore/forget about.

This movie is based off of Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy: _Annihilation, Authority,_ and _Acceptance._ I’ve read the entire trilogy and I can say that your comparisons to Arrival, Stranger Things, and Ghostbusters couldn’t be anymore inaccurate.

This film is so well made and directed. All editing, music, acting eveything done in a perfect way . Really loved it. It was not a low budget movie. It was deep.

Great movie, will definitely be one of my favorites. But the acting wasn't perfect--by anyone except Oscar Isaacs. The acting was mostly excellent, but not perfect. Can't iterate enough, great film.
