I am Austro-Italian and this reflects the love my mother had for beautiful music that she felt in her soul and body. She would grab me and waltz around my grandmother's apartment when grandma would open her little powder /music box that played this glorious song. Mom would twirl and sing all the words and that is how we kids were taught the beauty of great music and feelings. God bless you in heaven , Mom, for that gift to us.
Fifty years ago I was bridesmaid at sisters wedding. I was standing alone in the hallway as band arrived after the meal. the old man asked me!! what is the first song for wedding dance? without thinking I said "Oh' how we dance on the night we were we'd" 😊 they sounded wonderful until my aunt stopped them to play something else lol as she explained that was "the anniversary waltz" can't remember what they played?!🤣 November 2022.
This is the Anniversary Song, not the Anniversary Waltz, a different song. The song was written by Iosef Ivanovici, ironically known as the Johann Strauss of Romania. Written in 1880 lyrics were added in 1947 as the song was re-introduced to the world through The Jolson Story.
Believe it or not, M.A.S.H. Season 9, Episode 14, titled OH, HOW WE DANCED, features a young Korean boy playing the first minute or so of this, on a harmonica.
