Amazing, I pre-ordered it already! I bought "The A500 Mini" on release day, and I have the C64 Maxi and repaired it already, though I didn't used it very much! The PCB broke out of it's holders, but thanks to hot glue everything is OK for some time (I remember your project with "The 9-bit Guy" and "Jan Beta" and someone)! ;-)

The Atari 400 was my first computer as well. I remember arriving home and my dad already had it up and going into our small tv. He was typing in some basic programs. We also had the 410 program recorder - that was a very temperamental beast, always had to carefully watch the tape counter and save over twice for semi reliable storage. 800's and disk drives were always a bit out of our price range. But I loved that thing so much. Always wanted to do the 48k upgrade, but never did. And the keyboard upgrade. Star Raiders and Miner 2049er were my jams! Along with typing in basic programs from Antic and anywhere else I could find them. What a great time. Yeah - day 1 purchase for sure.
@SoulPoetryandOtherWorks
@SoulPoetryandOtherWorks 8 месяцев назад
I'd rather have seen the 800 mini or maxi. That was the computer that I used to drool over in magazines back in the day whilst owning the Sinclair ZX81. Still, as the mini will probably not have a working keyboard and support emulation of other Atari Models as well then it could be a fascinating development. The Atari 800 looked like a typewriter and looked like a far more serious computer.

Damn right I'm excited!!! 🥳 🎉 I loved those old Atari 8 bit computers; I had an original 800 for a while, but then stupidly upgraded to an 800XL - the lure of extra RAM...!!! I will have to get one of these 400's though; used to sell them in shop where I worked back then; wasn't keen on the keyboard, but then we got the 800...Oh man; that really turned my head! The keyboards were great too! Can't wait for this 400 to come out though.... I need one! Thanks for the video... smile 😊 👍

My rich friend had an Atari 800. He showed me the 256 color demos and graphics commands like drawto in Atari BASIC, 16 grayscale colors, built-in full-screen text-editor. In 1981 this was supercomputer stuff. When I found out the 400 had the same internals other than RAM I knew it was the dream computer that we could afford, and finally got my parents to upgrade from Pong.

This looks like the BEST candidate for being a mini console. I never was very patient and "kind" to my friend's Atari 400 back in the day, since I found the keyboard rather difficult to use. The same could be said for the Sinclair with the membrane "keyboard." Had that Sinclair for a few weeks in 1982 before I gave it away. After I received a Commodore for Christmas 1982, I was satisfied with my C64 until 1987 when I bought a Kaypro II PC clone for "business.". Very much looking forward to your report; I realise that I truly missed out on the lovely Atari 400 gaming scene. Seeing your take on it will be fun to watch! Aloha.

Finally a retro-flashback console worth talking about! Can't wait to hear more (most importantly will it support disc software (the very best of the 8-bit line), as well as cartridge emulation, and how does it deal with keyboard input (otherwise how do I get to the galactic map, warp drive and forward or aft views in Star Raiders.) Lots of questions, so looking forward to your review!!!!!

I reckon it was about the winter of 1980 into 81. Top floor Bentall's there was a computer area. 2 lasting memories, Cloudy Mountain in the intellivision, Star Raiders on the Atari 800. I was hooked. Got an after school job, didn't last due to an misunderstanding where I got the blame. Just enough saved for a Sinclair Spectrum (though it was a coin toss as the Oric was about the same price, close call). First post school job, first pay packet went on an 800xl discounted in Dixons. Found Games World in Hammersmith. Lots of Atari games there (also Traveller when it was still the little Black Books). The Epsom indoor market was another source of games, also a tourist trap shop near my Grandparents in Great Yarmouth was a very happy hunting ground for cartridges.

@TrusteftRetroWeekend
@TrusteftRetroWeekend 8 месяцев назад
@@dyscotopia First of all superior is debatable. Second when talking about nostalgia which is likely the major reason one wants these products, any "superior" version/port is irrelevant. Third if I want a technically superior version I will just use emulation on a modern PC and do anything I want with it, boost the clocks, add more RAM, whatever an emulator will allow, with zero cost too. So I don't really understand your comment, or at least I will pretend I don't understand so that this doesn't get derailed. Lastly, I already have an A500 mini.

The 400 and 800 were released at the same time; you may be thinking of the 800XL? Given that this thing covers the whole Atari 8-bit range (more or less; it doesn't mention the 130XE specifically, but very little software took advantage of the extra 64K) it's really just the case that's 400-specific then it's academic anyway, and to be honest there's actually not a *huge* difference between any of the machines in the family anyway.
@Brazbit
@Brazbit 8 месяцев назад
The 400 and 800 came out at the same time and were the same basic machine. The defining difference was the 800 had a more standard keyboard and a second cartridge slot that ended up being essentially useless. It was easier to upgrade the RAM on the 800 but that wouldn't be something that comes into play on a mini. The only difference in a modern mini system would be the aesthetics. Same games and user experience would be present regardless of the Atari 8-bit shell used be it the 400 or 800 from 1979, the various XLs and XEs or even the XEGS from 1987.

That's great...but I'm gonna need an Atari 800. The 400 was the kiddy/budget model that everyone was stuck with, and the 800 was the one we drooled over. I'm not sitting at the kids' table anymore, I want the 800.

In the open so many games that were C64 games, were seemingly on the Atari400, cool! Which are ports of the C64, and which were originals that were ported to the C64 I wonder! XD

The Atari 400 computer was released back in 1979. This year 2024 will mark the Atari 400’s 45th anniversary!

This will probably sell out having been bought up by 1000s of youtubers trying to be the first to review ☺ Hopefully the price of the real hardware will drop, as the original graphics look miles better going through S-Video on a tube TV or Arcade monitor.

Looks cool, I'll get one. Though personally, I'd rather have an 800...with a Left and Right SD card slot

Crack this thing open and it'll just be some $20 ARM soc board running an emulator. They might as well sell the empty plastic shell and design it to fit around a RPi Zero or something.

I would love a 800XL Maxi but I don’t think the interest is there, looking forward to the Amiga Maxi should it appear as anticipated

Cool! I didn't own one growing up so this is a good way to experience it.

Wish I had the skills to create a mold of the 5200 mini. This thing is built to just drop in. Both had 4 ports and the 5200 is sexy as hell. I don’t care what the haters say. It’s a beautiful system.

Is this still launching in just over 3 weeks time? There’s been very little information about it since the teaser video. Would have expected a few influencer videos by now.

The 400 was the exact same thing as the 800 but with less memory, a lousy keyboard and only one cartridge slot (which meant almost nothing was ever made that worked in the second cartridge slot on the 800).

My first home computer was an 800 XL, which makes me something of a keyboard snob, frankly. 😏

yes but i would guess the keyboard is useless as it's just fake.. like all the other "minis"

An Atari 800 XL or 130 XE design with a CX24 Pro-line style joystick would be incomparably better. These crappy CX40 joysticks are hard to use for most games (same goes for the C64 mini's joystick - it's massive like for a tractor or a tank)

I like the looks of this but never experienced early Atari stuff so think I will wait till it drops to £30.
