I was trying to film just a normal day in the life of Type I Diabetes. It just didn't go as planned. We LOVE our Dexcom but every so often we have days and nights like these! I wasn't going to post this video but I decided to go for it because this is real life and it shows how unpredictable our days are having Type I Diabetes. We've shared our Type I story since Day 1. Awe sweet Henry is so brave getting all those pokes daily and having that Dex in his body 24/7. I sure pray kids don't bully him, they can be so cruel sadly. You and Andy are such loving parents to those sweet boys there lucky to have you!! ❤️🙋👼

I am so sorry for a frustrating day! I always relate to these kinds of things, while my son doesn't have diabetes he does have life threatening food allergies to more than one food. So many days are spent trying to figure out what caused the hives that he randomly gets or if he makes a funny scratching noise in his throat we are trying to think what he ate and checking his breathing(he is only 2 so he can't fully communicate how he is feeling). Those are the worst days. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, I had no idea it was so complicated. What would you do without all that technology?!! Thanks so much for letting us peek into your day. You're a great mom, doing a great job with all three of your boys. Your littlest guy on the piano was so cute, with the little fingers, and the curls!! :)

What a brave strong boy Henry is. I really enjoy the videos. I am wondering why there is always such a difference in the dex and actually poking his finger? You are a great mom Amy! Your boys are lucky!!

We use the medtronic sensors (in Europe so we have the 640g and new transmitter)...i'm not sure if this is the same as with Dex but we were told to try to only calibrate at most 3 times in 24 hours and if at all possible not when there are arrows. I have another friend whose daughter is on the same system as we use and she was calibrating frequently if the cgm was off and/or if it had arrows, once she stopped doing that they had less days where readings were way off. Also, if our whole day is wonky I call medtronic and tell them; they will then ship us a new sensor for free. Maybe you could try that with Dexcom too. If you ever decide to go back on the pump I highly, highly recommend the Medtronic 640g. I don't think it is out in the states yet but I'm sure it will be soon. It has been amazing for us. Not only will the basal suspend in anticipation of a low but once the blood sugar rises it will turn itself back on. This has been so helpful in the night...we don't always wake up to our 4 year old's alarms because we sleep so deeply. We had the old Medtronic pump and while the suspend function was nice, sometimes she would wake up high because it would stay suspended for too long.

I am sure this will not be the same for you but just in case... When we first put my son on Dexcom we were calibrating it all the time. And it seemed like it was so off... more times than correct. Well we figured out we were basically confusing his dexcom. We decided to stop calibrating it so much, unless it was crazy off or if it is blood drop time. Since we have stopped calibrating it when it was like 10 and 20 points off now it seems to correct itself almost perfectly. I hope that made sense. I went from not loving dexcom to loving it now. Anyways, that is our story with it.

We love the Dex! We only calibrate when it asks us and if it's off by 20 points or if it's saying low and he's not. Those Dexcom support people are the best!!

Good morning Amy, our local New just had a story about how to eat healthier and the talked about cloud bread. I've never heard of it. I think they said it was carb free so maybe it's something Henry would like.

+dreamflight6000 can you do a video of it if you do make it? also, I saw that the RU-vid mommy meet up is going to Hershey, that is only 2 hours away from me. we go all the time! when I first started dating my husband and after we were married for quite a few years, we went every year with his family and we stayed at the camp ground down the road from the park. but we haven't camped there in a long time! Lol! we stay at a hotel now or just go down and back in one day. we love going to Hershey! we always have a wonderful time!!! its a nice park for young kids too I think. a lot of kids rides and a lot of shady spots to sit, relax and get out of the hot sun.

so frustrating. we had one of those nights last night. we didnt want to over correct lows so we were giving a tablet or even half a tablet. the dex was going off and my phone was alarming and then my husband's phone would go off a minute later... it was just insane. dex was accurate but just extremely persistent and the apps were keeping us up all night. eventually I gave him 2 tablets and he flung up to 200 but but we were so done with those lows.

I hate those days. Especially whrn the low is there for no reason. I had LOW double srrow down a few mo ths ago, bg of 29. The whole day my bg never got above 100.

I'm not trying to be nosy, I'm just curious why you prefer the shots over the insulin pump. Great video, and looks like you guys are doing an awesome job with Henry's diabetes!

I made a video all about it. I'll link it here when I get on my computer. He just couldn't be a kid with the pump.

+dreamflight6000 Yeah I was curious also, Henry is the first person I have come across to only have the CGM, it doesn't appear to be an aversion to technology as such. Lots of people I have talked to prefer to either have clear skin (no pump site or cgm) or don't mind. I have a pump myself and am looking into getting a dexcom.

Does Henry ever check his own blood sugar at home? I was diagnosed at 3 years and I remember that I tested with mom's supervision at 6. I remember it helped me feel better because I felt like I could control an aspect of having diabetes. Hope the dexcom calibrates. :D
@dreamflight6000
@dreamflight6000 8 лет назад
He does sometimes. He hates it!! He struggles with it too. It errors or he can't get enough blood etc. I'm not sure what to do about that. He just doesn't want to test himself.

How long does Henry wear the same inset? I have found that Week 2 with Dex is soooo much more accurate than Week 1 and Week 3 is a mess. Usually we get about 16-17 days out of an inset. And there is a beautiful, brilliant, *accurate* four or five days in there. It's still nice to have Dex. We could never go back, but it sure is annoying when it alarms so often!
@dreamflight6000
@dreamflight6000 8 лет назад
Henry changes his inset every 7 days. We haven't tried going longer because his skin is so prone to those lumps and his skin is sensitive. Last night was a bad night.. It said 66 and then green minutes later it said HIGH. Errors at night are the hardest for us.
@kidpsych2be
@kidpsych2be 8 лет назад
Oh man, Athena gets those lumps where her pump insets are, but she refuses to let us put it anywhere else. She wears Dex on the back of her upper arm and thankfully, no lumps. What a bummer you can't go longer....it really does give the best readings on Week 2.

Does Henry feel when he is low yet? I have been in the 50s and feel dizzy, etc, but my BS runs low (hypoglycemic) and obviously I am an adult. For me, it has always been fine between 70-80 but I don't know what it is like for Type I. Is it different for kids as well? As adults, our reference range is 80-120ish...I am not sure the worry with just a few units lower or higher than that reference range. Or is it because he had just eaten and it is an indicator that his BS will continue to drop? I hope that made sense. I have never taken care of type 1 patients (no peds experience), just type 2 and it really is like apples and oranges...or carrots:)
