In order to save her grandfather's mansion, Rama agrees to marry a much older male, Madanlal, who decides to sell some artifacts to prospective wealthy buyers, including Mr. and Mrs. Rai. संजीव कुमार साहब की अदाकारी और कभी नहीं भूलाई जाने वाली इस फिल्म की कहानी हिन्दी सिनेमा जगत में सदैव अविस्मर्णीय रहेगा। इस फिल्म में संजीव कुमार जी ने कई चारित्र को बड़े कायदे से जीया है।खासकर सुखद और ट्रेजडी वाले situation में जो किरदार निभाया है वह स्मृतियों में एक धरोहर के रुप में सदैव जिवीत रहेगा। फिल्म के अन्त में जब पुलिस उन्हें ले जा रही है उस समय एक काले धुंद में उनकी दिख रही दोनों आंखें जिसमें ना जाने दुनिया जहाँ के दर्द और कई अनुत्तरित प्रश्न तैर रहे हैं ,,,और back ground में महान गायक मुकेश साहब का गीत,,औह रे ताल मिले नदी के जल में,,,,,,,अत्यंत भावुक कर देने वाला दृश्य है । अनायास ही आंखें गीली हो गयी।

असित सेन और संजीव कुमार को बहुत-बहुत नमन है। परीक्षित साहनी और जाहिदा हुसैन की एक्टिंग तो लाजवाब है। गानों का कोई मुकाबला नहीं। रोशन इंदीवर और कैफी आज़मी आप को शत शत नमन। कुल मिलाकर पूरी फिल्म शानदार डायलॉग जितनी तारीफ करुं उतनी कम है।

यह फिल्म अभिनय,गीत संगीत, संवाद सब तरीके से बेहतरीन फिल्म,,,इस फिल्म में जो दिखाया व बताया गया है कि औरत को सदियों से केवल भोग विलास ही समझा गया है। जबकि साश्वत सत्य है कि औरत पुरुष से किसी भी प्रकार से कम नहीं है, बल्कि बिना औरत के इस दुनिया कि कल्पना करना नामुमकिन है। "सदा सीधे सादे लोग ही कुर्बान होते आए हैं"-चाहे वो नर या नारी में से कोई भी हो"! हर प्राणीमात्र उस प्रकृति से उपजता है तो फिर आप और हम किसी भी व्यक्ति वस्तु स्थान आदि को कमतर आंकने की गलती क्यों और कैसे करते हैं ?

Finished watching the movie at 3.55 am, was surfing through the tv when came across this movie and a beautiful song " Mahalo ka Raja mila", searched the movie name and checked if available on RU-vid and switched off the tv...what an experience...story, direction, screenplay, dialogues music, lyrics, expressions, thril, performance and Hari Bhai...never came across this movie but will definitely ask people around me to watch it... thanks You tube and for uploading such a masterpiece

Sanjeev Kumar was the best actor that Bollywood never deserved . He never refused any role. He played Father and Father to heroines like Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini while playing hero with them. The song' Taal mile nadi ke jal mein' brought tears to my eyes. I remember watching this melodious song on Chitrahaar almost 35 years ago

Exactly same here.. first I watched the song oh re taal and then searched for movie. Luckily I found it on RU-vid and post watching it realise it's quite hard hitting. Shows how rich people are trying to exploit the poor. Sanjeev kumar ji's acting is really superb. Liked mukri's performance as well. His comic timing and expressions are really good sply in oh re taal song.

A superb art movie.. heap up of truth.. bitter truth of society.. the filthy ways of money making by Sahukaar.. innocent girls haressed and sacrificed since hundreds of years.. a story of again an innocent man who's dacoit in ppl's eyes... and the story of loyalty of servants.. Purity lies in hearts.. purity lies in loyalty.. purity lies in ppl who seem ugly in society... And real loathsome ppl dressed up and look respectable everywhere... Nothing has changed even today in society... just ways and names hv changed... This is life... Wow.. amazing movie...

The best thing about this movie was its dialogues. Seedhi sateek batein, unme zarurat ke hisab se alankar..faltu ki bakwas nahi. Aaj ki movies ke dialogue mein ye swaad hota hi nahi..aisi movies 50 saal pehle bana karti thi aur tab ke baad phir kabhi nahi ban payi.. Hats off to the entire production!
