Why does ice float on water?
You may already know that ice is less dense than water, but why? Usually, solids are denser than liquids.
In this video, we will explore the Anomalous expansion of water, and understand what makes ice less dense than water. We also look at some other consequences of this phenomenon.

every time i have asked anyone ( this is atleast 10 years ive been confused)why ice is less dense than water they have given me a complicated answer that has always confused me and never really answer my question .Furthermore this question was asked by my examinor in viva...Thankyou is an understatement.!

My question is does this mean it's more efficient to store water at +4 degrees than when it's frozen ?

You will have to figure that out because to maintain 4°C you will have to use electricity or fuel in addition to a good insulator.

Water crystallizes into ice, but more importantly for us, it keeps expanding. This is why ice has less density than water.
