Oh how I miss these days. I loved the British and Australian invasion days here in the states. All my friends with banging out to the rock bands while I was listening to music like this.
Harri, ss suggested earlier try out the official video of Great Southern Land which became an anthem for Australia. They have lots of great songs. One of my favourites.
Icehouse was formed in Sydney, Australia 🇦🇺. Lead singer, multiple instrumentalist and continuous member Iva Davies lists David Bowie as one of his influences. Written by Iva Davies and John Oates. This was written 3 years after Daryl Hall was a guest for the more famous Sydney band INXS in Original Sin, which was produced by Nile Rodgers. There is a recent version where John Oates played with Icehouse. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cz-PArSs_3A.html. This is a follow-up to their most popular song Crazy. Suggested next video 📹 Crazy. Other Australian 80s musicians, partial list: AC/DC (Young brothers and lead singers were born in the UK but formed the band in Sydney 🇦🇺), Rick Springfield, Mondo Rock, Hoodoo Gurus, Cold Chisel, Darryl Braithwaite, John Farnham, the late Jon English, Sr., Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Church, Crowded House (Neil Finn is a New Zealander 🇳🇿 but formed his band in Sydney), Little River Band with Glenn Shorrock as lead singer, Air Supply, Divinyls, Kylie Minogue and sister Dannii Minogue. Olivia Newton John was born in the UK 🇬🇧 but spent her youth in Australia 🇦🇺 1990s Australian musicians, partial list: Natalie Imbruglia, Kasey Chambers, Vanessa Amorrosi, Tina Arena, Powderfinger, Savage Garden, Silverchair, Kylie Minogue and sister Dannii Minogue. 🇦🇺.
I'll add to the chorus of reviewing another Australian band...The Church...especially 'Under the Milky Way'. That song is exceptionally great. You will not be disappointed.
Icehouse was amazing , hugely successful, lead singer Iva Davies, has a very distinctive voice (and mullet) Check out Great Southern Land, you haven't heard anything like that before.
Being an Aussie, I'm very familiar with Icehouse ( including their early days when called Flowers ), and they had a number of very good songs .. I encourage you to check out "My Obsession" ( my favourite ), "We Can Get Together," and "I Can't Help Myself" ( their first hit ) .. Cheers, Wayne
Iva Davies, the lead singer and songwriter, was once asked in an interview if he regretted giving this song the same name as an internationally famous brand of pornographic videos .. He laughingly agreed that he would have called it something else if he had been aware of that fact ! 😅😉
Harri, I am happy to hear a British person say the the English and Australian accents can be quite similar. My daughter always teases me for not being able to distinguish between them at times. Also agree that80’s bands sounded too much like one another. 🌺✌️
You forgot Kylie Minogue (yes), Jason Donovan and the best of them all: Crowded House. If you don’t know Crowded House, you should definitely dig in to them. The Beatles influence is definitely there so you should at least like them a bit. 😉
I see what you mean about the 80's sound. Even though I have heard this song so many times, especially coming from down under, on this occasion I could hear a touch of Duran Duran. On that subject, if I was to name an exception, it would have to be The Smiths...especially with Morrissey's vocals and Marrs guitar sounds...
Australian pop music at the time tended to follow UK styles but with a bit more guitar and blues. UK Ska bands certainly inspired the use of a lot of brass in Oz music of the time.
Hi there. Huge Icehouse fan - a bit disappointed in this choice and a couple below - Great Southern Land, Hey Little Girl, Uniform, No Promises, Don't Believe Anymore among better choices than this.
Agree, about period of over production. It was running through the music industry. At the time, I caught their Live shows and they were so much better LIVE. I blame Stock Aitkin Waterman. Can Music
