For me, I had to use Mantis Punch to break a block to get the first one. Did they change that in an update? By the way, I really appreciate your guides on this game! They've been very helpful.

I talked to the moon snail and don’t see an option to increase umami charges, can someone tell me how I increase them? Edit: nvm, I found it it increases automatically

Guys if you're watching this video now they changed the first whorl location into a mantis punch block and moved the sandpit ambush to another area. I walked around for an hour because I was sure I already had the sandpit encounter only to check it again and see that I didn't have the first whorl.
