Worked at a very nice hotel and saw some stuff and not only filthy disgusting guests ,the dirtiest guests were definitely many of the women.Just absolutely vile stuff,but some housekeepers that definitely weren't doing their job.

I'm pretty sure they would also be terrible. Probably not "drugs under the mattress terrible", but "jizz on the walls terrible" for sure.

I work maintenance at a unnamed chain. Some are super clean others have people o.ding every other week. It's what clientele the hotel is set to cater. Drug and prostitute meet up? Pretty gross. Business and travel? Pretty clean.

Here in the USA we pride ourselves on human cheese, furniture held together by spent bodily fluids and bugs.

StarlightAlly Oh no, Hiltons and Hamptons can have just as many problems. My mom has worked as a bartender at a Hilton for over 30 years, and they constantly are fighting bed bugs. You are absolutely making the right call with the precautions you are taking.

Usually when I stay in a hotel. It's in another state and I have gotten there by airplane. So I could either take clothes and toiletries. Or all that stuff. Even though I fly Southwest Airlines. With two checked bags and a carry on

I worked in a 5* Hotel for a few years, everything was immaculately clean except the comforters which were never changed or washed as they matched the curtains in the room. There were just a hand full of spare ones just in case one of them had to be washed or thrown out if they became too obviously stained, but apart from that, the Hotel was really good.

It’s vital. You don’t want to wake up covered with bites or rashes.

I stayed in one where the internet stopped working in the entire hotel, the clerk did mention they were getting a tech from the service provider to come to fix it that morning (we were heading out for the day anyways) it was working later

So how about doing real nice motel and see how it stacks up?? I'm talking like a $200.00 a night room and if its dirty get your money back. I would be careful about doing these you are going to have someone come to your house and maybe kick your ass for showing there motel.

Compare the reviews. Only 35 people rated excellent. But 95 people rated it horrible. Many people were NOT happy with that place.

Why would that matter? Just because a place is cheap, doesn't mean they're allowed to sell a DIRTY room? You are paying them money on the promise that you get at least a clean room, it doesn't have to be fancy. Obviously a more expensive one will be nicer but that has nothing to do with this at all.

Meredith B i used to work at a hotel. It's not the housekeepers, it's mainly the supervisors who inspect and the manager. My guess is that they don't have enough supplies and horrible management :/

+Paola G Or the supervisors themselves haven't had enough training in how to do a proper inspection. I've seen them pay attention to the obvious stuff, but miss the little stuff like dust on the top shelf of the closet, etc. But not having adequate supplies, and/or horrible management / owners? Yes, that is definitely a problem. There's one hotel owner in my hometown whose hotel has changed franchises three times in as many years. He lets it get filthy to the point that they yank his franchise, then he shuts it down and cleans it so he can get a different franchise. You couldn't *pay* me enough to stay in any of his hotels.

I've seen a documentary like this a few years back and ever since, I ALWAYS travel with my own pillow and sheets, and I ALWAYS clean the bathroom before I use it. Especially in cheap motels and hostels (in the latter you sometimes have to make your own bed anyway when you arrive, I just prefer to use my own sheets). I travel a lot, I get tired a lot but I got accustomed to doing it. And yes, even the best/most expensive hotels sometimes are this dirty...

Eva Bakker I think they should have hotel inspectors to go around and make sure it's not that dirty. It's blatant abuse of weary travelers who needs somewhere to stay. overcharging them for a disease-ridden room.

TFrills I absolutely agree. Here in Europe there is inspection but they are obligated to notify the hotel beforehand that they're coming. So naturally every hotel/hostel/motel is spotless when those guys come. It's really bad that hotels get away with it. This is why I always try to stay over at friends if possible, and if I really can't, I'll book something cheap but not insanely cheap. The insanely cheap ones are too desperate for customers so they probably have something to hide, and the expensive ones are nearly never better than the cheap to mid-priced ones. I once stayed at a hotel in Antwerp, Belgium where they didn't allow me to use my own sheets due to bed bug risks but then they did have live cockroaches and mice crawling around in the rooms... I immediately checked out of there :p

Eva Bakker Yeah staying with friends or family would be ideal. The nicest hotel I've stayed at was the 4 seasons in Lake Tahoe and that's a chain hotel. Unfortunately almost all my friends and family live on the West Coast of the USA here, almost all of them clustered around San Francisco and Seattle. So that is pretty limited. I used to have a friend in Reno but he moved back. I hated staying at his house anyway, his roommate was insane and they kept the heater at 80 degrees all night.
