Didn't need this on the second day of harvest! no harm done though apart from the loss of one bale! Could have been a lot worse had it gotten into the standing wheat, like it did with the big fire 3 years ago.
GEORGE . you need to buy a second hand water bowser from a farm sale and fit a small engine to power a pump and keep it on standby in the Farm Yard. A small fire can become a large fire in no time. PX farms have a water tank on their Chaser Bins with a pump in case a combine catches fire or for fighting a field fire.
For some reason this reminded me of the layer of straw and leaves my parents had laid across the garden (about calf to knee deep) that started to smolder & burn during a light rain years ago. Best we could ever figure was that the rain added just enough moisture to drastically accelerate the composting process creating a hot spot that started smoldering/burning - not unlike a hay bale that was baled a bit too moist being able to start a fire & burn down a barn.
That dammed global bolling is how the bbc would angle this one George! Hottest July on record etc because records started this year it seems. Glad you spotted it and only lost one bale and a bit of time. Lucky escape.
Hi George, You don’t have much luck with fires one good thing is you soon put it out let’s hope you don’t get any more. Take care of yourself and stay safe.🚜🚜⭐️👍👌💦💦
Never heard of straw self combusting but hay that isn't quite dry can heat and go up as we know. Are you sure nobody is the woods being stupid I wonder? Or maybe a piece of glass or something on the bale?
Great Video George, the most effective fire management tool is a set of disc's attached to a tractor, the key to deal with a fire in stubble is an effective fire break, I remember a fire when i was young which was only stopped by bulldozer removing cover from getting into a 15,000 acre forest, that fire had torch 4 houses and 5 sets of farm buildings, and it had started from a hay mower hitting a stone 3-4 days prior, thanks for sharing
you got lucky there George least you did not have swaths of straw near it when it did go up and good to see you where well prepared forbit with the fire extingquishers and having water ready great job putting the fire out 👍
Hi George you were lucky mate that you were near by and you spotted it fair play 👏 god if you weren't there it could have been a lot worse. It would be a good idea if you came across a small water bowser with a little engine on it or you filled your slurry tanker as well and have it filled with water and on standby to leave the yard whenever you need it. It doesn't have to be bales of straw that would catch fire it could be yer baler or yer combine. Well done again and keep up the great mate.
Never nice George... we lost a full winters supply +3 sheds due to an arson twit years ago.. joys of being next to a road i suppose 🙄.. One new one to look out for is the E cigarettes... batteries go 💥.. iv collected 50 + over the years out of the fields next to the road.. stay safe 🏴
Cheers Sara, you've just got to crack on as fast as you can to try and contain it. It would have been different if it had made it to the standing crop 👍
I wonder if something could have been flicked up from the main road behind the hedge, after falling of a vehicle? The bale is close to the hedge. Just a thought
In NL i have seen a farmer fill up their slurry tank with water and put a fire out that way. He had also prepared himself and had the tank ready to go in case.
Bloody good idea having IBC's full of water on standby. You just never know. Incidentally have you recieved delivery of the Cheese Xl?. The currier has confessed to nibbling on a packet or two or maybe them all...😂
Sounds like your near a road do you think someone went and lit it deliberately I have had two round balers burst out in flames when bales were being released,i now try to avoid baling hay and straw in the middle of the day now
Gonna start calling you blaze soon😆🤦♂. Yeah definitely a strange one! Other thing I thought is there was a lump of green taken in?? Heated up and caught 🤷♂ probably never know what happened but a good a catch 👍👌
re bonjour George et Liz , tu a bien réagit , mon patron pendant la moisson il a toujours les deux grosse tonne a eau remplie au cas ou ,des fois sa arrive avec les cailloux par chez nous bon courage a vous pour la moisson 👍
You need to take your tanker to the field you're working in. If you have to run to the farm for it, it might be too late. Wouldn't want your new combine to burn now would you.
Don’t be so optimistic about how the fire started. It wouldn’t be spontaneous combustion in straw and I bet you didn’t find a broken piece of glass. It’s been done deliberately George.
Hi George that was a lucky one we had a combine go up it just started the stubble alight then it rained frightening from that day we always had a water bowser in the field just in case 😮
Be a spark out tractor lum min anyway should have taking the bale's of and let the stubble burn clean up feild from the spark that came out the lum oh the tractor a can can start it off glass as well
Might be a stretch of the old imagination here but maybe someone flicked a cigarette but over the ditch. I can hear cars going by so there must be a road the far side of that ditch there.
Hey George, Looks like a possible Lightning Strike may have hit Next to the bale? Not many dark clouds above you But it can happen! Get a pitchfork and attach it to the tractor side with a strap and keep a 10 or 15 liter water pump garden sprayer on the tractor or in the cab so it don't roll or fall over. You could fill it from the water you got in the water crate unit and pump it up for pressure and use the pitchfork to open up the bale and spay with the water sprayer. Well done for seeing it. Nasty stuff.
Could very well have been a bit of green or moist material in the bale that you may not have seen whilst baling, and as was trapped in the bale it would take a bit of time to heat up to the point where it would combust. I’d say that’s that most likely scenario, where I’m from I’ve heard of whole haysheds being lost due to one bale being slightly greener than the rest but appearing dry on the outside when it was stacked. Regardless, glad you were able to put it out before it got out of hand.
I recon it would be a dog walker discarding a cigarette onto the bale. I see you have a field entrance in that standing crop, I bet they came into the field through that. Dog walkers should be banned from the countryside, they’re either letting dogs chase livestock or setting fires. Grrr
We've got the proper firefighters if it gets out of hand. We do have the IBC's and the 3000 gallon tanker. Plus cultivators ready to go for fire breaks, so we are well equipped 👍
