Video updated for 2022, parts list/links were updated as well.

OLD Parts list below.
Our version of the generator shed. As part of our 2020 hurricane prep, and after installing an interlock kit into our electrical system, the final piece was to build a shed so we could use the generator in the rain and dampen the sound. In a perfect world, I'd have done a concrete slab first - I was just too lazy and had these concrete pads laying around.
Note: Building anything is not our skill set. I'm a doofus with tools I am clueless on how to use most of them, but I used them anyway. I'm sure this could be done better, hopefully this helps you when you build yours.
Jan 2021 updated: Still working out. I've had one power outage since making the video. Only thing I added was a thermometer to measure internal shed temp. Also, I'm sorry for filming vertically, lol. Lastly, thank you for all the comments, good, bad or indifferent. I only meant to show others how WE built ours, like a pay it forward to the other videos that helped us.

I used various stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers.
If you watched the entire video, you’ll see I started with 3 ½ inch bolts, which were too long. 3 inch bolts were perfect. Lots of washers!

You could use 1 1/2 ridged Roxul instead of styrofoam and hardi board. Roxul is fire proof, mold, insect, critter proof, water repellent and it will knock back the sound too. Other than that, looks like a great setup.

I have a predator 9000 and I got it down to "Conversation" range(65-68 decibles) using a decibel app I downloaded without a load. It was very comfortable to my ears. It was "quiet library" inside the house.

I appreciate you taking the time to do this video. The noise factor is the worst thing about these power outage generators. I just purchased a 3600 Simpson and am in the process of designing a quiet enclosure for it. My son uses those little Honda portable generators and they make a lot less noise. The imitations of the Honda seem to be also very good and a lot cheaper. If I had it to do over, I think I'd buy a couple of those quieter generators rather than one big one that's super noisy. But I'd still build a shed for them. Thanks for the video!

I have the same issue. I have a similar shed. 8kw diesel generator. I found those fans burn out due to heat. I’d replace with an 8” industrial extraction fan. Just be careful with petrol generators the fuel tanks enclosed can get quite hot and petrol has a lower flash point that diesel. Ie move the air quick and fast and you won’t have a fire hazard. I’d get some heat resistant foam panels for the interior for some sound dampening. Good job. Lovely build.

If you build a three sided box around the intake and exhaust openings inside the enclosure, and line them with foam, they will cut the noise down even more. Sound doesn't like to go around corners. Very nice job. Whoever said you weren't handy with tools was a liar.

Here is a reminder about portable generator safety: This advice is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Everyone has to see this safety reminder for safety. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I1jT3ANENvI.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps. Thank you.

Lining the inside of the shed with rock wool insulation will significantly reduce sound .It's extremely sound deadening and fire proof. The Hardie boards really don't add any benefits to the overall build except to add strength to the shed, which it really doesn't need, otherwise the build looks great .
@captstubeans
@captstubeans 3 года назад
Danny, I love rock wool! Built an entire recording studio using Roxul along with resilient channeling, and I agree with you, this could have been made MUCH quieter using more dampening materials. I had to consider costs vs db reduction. I'm of the school that mass, more than anything reduces sound, so I went down the path I went down. Appreciate the suggestion!

I own two of those same lifetime sheds for fuel storage. I built the generator shed out of the taller lifetime model and run a Generac 17500. I have 3 fans like your Hessaire for a total of 2200CFM. I'm in Houston so hot temps like Florida. What kind of temperatures are you experiencing on long runs? It can be 120 in my shed without the engine on. I used Rockwool insulation instead of cement board to lower the sound and it works good but maybe helping hold the heat inside. I'm thinking of starting over and customizing the exact shed you have since I can lift the lids if it's not raining. I'm no longer that worried about noise since all my neighbors are getting standby generators.

What’s the sense in butting all those vents it’s just as loud just vent the exhaust and your good mine is a 13000 predator and it’s fine and my in-closer is much more quiet 🤫

I thought having the fan pull air from those vents would keep ot pretty cool. Most every video o saw did the same.

With the fan and vents, why put in a pipe to exhaust? Wouldn't the vents and fan be enough to exhaust fumes and keep cool?

all frame based generators are loud, which is one of the main reasons for building the enclosure. i cannot hear it inside the house when its on, and my neighbor wont complain either.

@@captstubeans I meant after you built the box, I know that their loud,,I did a similar build with a 4500 generator, smaller of course, and can barely hear it while in the box,, maybe its the recording Im hearing it loud while in your enclosure, ok, nice build it looks great
@captstubeans

@@guglielmodicarlo4139 i think it seems louder on the phone then in person, but Im not worried about how loud it is when im standing there as much as what i hear in my house and what my neighbor might hear. If you're ever in FLA, pop over and check it out. I'll give you the 3 minute walk around, lol

Looks great. However I’m concerned for the plastic enclosure? Then the garage next door. The neighbors fence (more plastic) & the shed, all in a tight space. Three things concern me. Vibration, noise reverberating & heat. Lots of heat. Still sounds loud! What do your neighbors say? You said you live in Florida? Florida is hot & muggy. Will it run a window A/C or your central air? My approach was different & I spared no expense. I’m sure you paid a lot less? A whole lot less! I’m currently at $13,000 & counting. Counting because I continue to make improvements to mine. My roll out can run my entire house in the summer time including my central air in New England. I had a fabricator custom build a 306 stainless steel enclosure for mine. On a poured in place steel reinforced concrete pad. With a grounding grid for the generator. Generators supply power to your house. As well as make static electricity. A driven ground connected to your generator chassis will prevent you from getting zapped off the steel frame & more importantly quite possibly prevent a spark when re-fueling your generator with fresh gas. You might want to consider a trickle charger for your battery if it’s a push button start? I have one on mine with a dedicated line from the house. I have an auxiliary fuel tank that holds an additional 6 gallons of gas. You’ll need to prime it each time you use it. Then have it higher than the generator for gravity feed. Mine is fuel injected so mine will siphon fuel on it’s own without priming. My aux fuel tank sits on the concrete. I extended my run time from 12 hours to 28 hours. My enclosure is vented on two sides. Plenty of flow through ventilation. After running mine for 2 days continuously the cabinet was warm not hot to the touch. My enclosure is secured with a 4 pound pad lock to keep everyone honest. Just remember. If you have no power? The gas station around the corner won’t have power either. Fuel is pumped to the nozzle in your hand by electricity. No electricity? No fuel to buy. You might want to consider buying a few extra 5 gallon jugs of gas & have the fuel treated so it’s available year round. Generators work better with fresh gas or treated gas. I use marine grade Stabil & Star Tron fuel enzyme. In combination my stored fuel lasts atleast a year. I rotate my fuel & burn it in my trucks. Then buy fresh fuel & treat that again. The most fuel I used was 22 gallons for a 2 day outage. Something to consider? Most people only have a small 2 gallon jug to refuel their generator. They must have a lot of time on their hands to get fuel & refuel it? I’m usually at work when mine is on. I only come home to shower & sleep. Then I’m back to work again. I like a warm shower & a cool room that is dark. That’s hard when I sleep during the day. I’m a lineman for the local power company. Our first day on we work a 24 hour shift. Then go home at 8 a.m. I get about 4-5 hours sleep & return at 3 p.m. to work until 8 a.m. the next day. I don’t have time to shop for a fuel station open or refueling my generator all day long like some?

I would actually put the fan low and the vent high.
@xdsone
@xdsone Год назад
Why? I'm asking because heat rises and if the fan is at the top it should pull the hottest air out and the vent being lower would allow cooler air in from the bottom.

This video would have been so much better to watch if it was shot in landscape mode and not in portrait. I'll never understand why people shoot video in portrait mode.....................
@captstubeans

agreed, and thats my bad. I think people shoot like that because thats how we hold our phones (which is what i used). I have since delved into video production and learned not to use portrait. I wish I could re-shoot the entire thing, now that I have a bit more experience with video editing.
