❤ loved this haul! I think what’s hard about Dickens is that his writing changes so drastically over his career, all his books can be really different! We’ll see how we like Bleak House! I haven’t actually read Great Expectations, but it seems to be a favorite among many. I love Tale of Two Cities, and I think that was my first Dickens! It was either that or A Christmas Carol, lol

K I think I might start with Tale of Two Cities, that seems to be the common vote!

Great haul! 👏🏻 Thanks for mentioning the Dickens read along! I've have had Bleak House on my shelf for a while. I only started reading Dickens 5 or 6 years ago and I started with A Christmas Carol. 🤷🏼‍♀ Then I read: Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friend, The Pickwick Papers, A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist. I *loved* A Tale of Two Cities. 📚

I loved Bleak House and if you do read it…we will have to discuss my favorite word in that book that just cracked me up! His humor is subtle at times but I really enjoy him

Butters snoring 😆 I would start with A Christmas Carol when it comes to Dickens. Great book haul! 😊📚📚📚

Whew! You hit the jackpot! So many awesome books to choose from. 📚 I was cracking up hearing Butter snoring away. 😊 The Louise Penny series, actually gets better as it goes on, the first book isn’t as good as the rest, but is still good. The setting is so lovely, and so well described, that it really puts you right there amidst the snowy beauty in the Canadian setting of, “Three Pines” , you can almost hear the wind and feel the chill in the air, the characters are memorable (some of whom are quirky and eccentric), and the relationship between Gamache and his wife is so wonderful to read. I have read all of the Dickens novels, and feel like “Bleak House” may make you not want to read the rest, but a group buddy read may make it more tolerable. (My fave of his was “The Christmas Carol” but also liked “Oliver Twist”, as well.) Although, I don’t really read romance, I am open to reading anything, and I do love a great historical fiction novel with characters who may possibly get together…and throughout the solving of a mystery or obstacles of life…slowly, but ultimately do. A series I would recommend in that regard would be the Wrexford & Sloane series by Andrea Penrose. It is set in the Regency period, with a smart, talented, witty woman protagonist, and a brilliant, handsome, aristocratic scientist, solving some believable, great mysteries using each of their talents. (Book #1 is “Murder on Black Swan Lane” - released in 2017, and there are currently seven books in the series, thusfar.) I started reading them when I heard Steve Donoghue talking about them, and I have enjoyed them all. (Andrea Penrose also has a cozy mystery series called the Lady Arianna Hadley regency mystery series, which I have not read.) Although, I primarily read non-fiction, I do enjoy reading most genres, and have read all the Winspear novels, and do love Maisie! That was another Steve recommendation. 🙂 I have purchased the Ashley Weaver books, because you enjoyed them so much, but I have yet to start. 🙂 I am currently listening to “Covenant of Water” by Abraham Verghese, (2023) and physically reading “Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers” by Jess Sutanto (2023), as well as, “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt (2022), “Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club” by J. Ryan Stradall (2023), “The Wager” by David Grann (2023), “The Book of Charlie” by David Von Drehle (2023), and I am re-reading “Maus” which was originally released as a series of graphic novels when I read them the first time, but now have been released as a hard back bind up of all the books. Love my library! 💜 (And of course, love used book sales, independent book stores, and Book Outlet!) 📚 Thanks for sharing, your book stash, Melissa! ☮️🧡📚

Great haul! We have pretty similar taste in books so I love watching your channel. I’m just getting into collecting historical romance and it’s been so much fun. I’m with you on loving the Bantam classics. There’s just something cozy about them. I find them enjoyable to read from.

Just finding your channel - so happy I did! You will LOVEEE the Morland Dynasty story - I've read the complete series - and are such easy reads, grabs from book 1, I got towards the end and was savouring each last one :) hoping that the author would keep it going ( it ends in the 1930s I believe? ). I was drawn to this one because I love series and longgg books! I've also read the War at Home series ( much smaller ) was very good too. happy reading!! Jacqueline

You might also like Wrexford and Sloane by Andrea Penrose, it's one of my favorites. 🙂 That is awesome you got all the Poldark books. I loved book one but haven't continued, may need to reread at this point been a few years lol. Great haul!

Really enjoyed The Last Bookshop in London. I'm in the minority but just did not get into Still Life. I read it, but it didn't "speak to me" like it has to many others, so I won't be continuing the series. I have JUST RECENTLY gotten into reading Catherine Cookson!! I read two of hers so far this year and enjoyed them so much that I ordered some more! Then I realized I have The Bailey Chronicles on my shelf and have been ignoring it for YEARS - time for me to pick it up!! My hubby is from England, so I really do enjoy Brit authors that are sort of obscure here. I've read two this year by another Brit author, D.E. Stevenson. I had the first of a duology on my kindle for YEARS and finally read it -- it was SO GOOD that I HAD to read the sequel. I'll be reading more by her as well!

Maybe we should buddy read The Bailey Chronicles?! Lmk! But ya I’m definitely always trying to find the more obscure British authors too, that’s so cool your hubby is from there 😍

@@librariesandlabradors I dove right into The Bailey Chronicles and am now nearly 300 pages in! It's so good, but I'm a sucker for a good family saga!! That's one of my only beefs with traditional "romance" books - that they tend to end with the couple together, or with the marriage. I say, "heck, that's just the beginning!!" I like to see what happens AFTER they are together 🙂 So yes, I'm really enjoying Bill Bailey and his crew!
