Whenever I start a video I don't know where it is going to lead me until I get into it. Once I see it is something we have already covered (besides brake jobs) I usually just scrap the video and move on. For what ever reason in this case I kept goin but just cut it a little short. If you want to see the entire process click on this vid I did from a few years ago --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XFX-c7Nanv4.html after all, it's just another Jeep with a bad ground haha. -Enjoy

But...i have learned so much valuable information from Eric O and this channel that I have never missed a video. Even if it's a repeat concept, I've still watched them all. In my 40 years in this business, I have seen it happen more than twice. Granted that these vehicles were also used off road a lot but it's always best to check before throwing parts. When you find 4 bad O2s, it makes you second guess your diag, your info, and/or your equipment. LOL, What's the chances of all four parking light bulbs being burned out at once? Or both headlights? Seen it happen several times as well. I learned years ago that if all the lights don't work, check the fuses and if the fuses are good check the bulbs next. The thing is many people don't keep their vehicles in good working shape. If the check engine light is on but it drives with little hassle, they go. The Jeep in this video was only getting fixed so they could pass emissions testing for the inspection. Probably for license plate renewal (I'm not sure how NY does that). From the looks of that ground connection, it had been bad for a while. The O2 heaters turn off after the exhaust heats up so there probably wasn't a big drivability issue especially for the gas and go types.

I worked for a GM dealer as a parts mgr in the late 80s and early 90s. Grounds were the first thing our technicians would check for any electrical problem. My nephew asked me what was wrong with his sons car after the dealer replaced every sensor on the car including the PCM. I told him have them check the engine grounds. He thought they had but he brought it to an independent repair shop and they fixed the broken ground wire on an engine stud and gave the car back to him.

Thank you for this great video Eric I would imagine that your audience has more skill and understanding than many shops. I think that the real challenge is to learn to think how you think. And that comes down to asking the right questions. And then testing for those answers. You do it so well that you make it look so easy. I have to wonder how many of us would still be scratching our heads if not for the miracle of RU-vid video. The only thing that I could suggest to make the video better is gather all the diagnosis information without telling us what’s wrong with it. Have viewers stop the video and think about it for a minute or two or three or an hour or a day and then come back to it to see the answer. I have tremendous respect for you.

I am not a professional mechanic. I own a Chrysler product. I had a few electrical devices stop working, so I did what Eric taught me...got a wiring diagram, looked at the circuits, found they all have a common ground. Found the grounding point...it was full of green crusties. I repaired the grounding point, all problems solved. For a "professional repair shop" to not have been able to diagnose that problem is IMHO appalling. Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Chryslers have grounding issues. I honestly feel bad for whoever owns that Jeep...they got shafted big time by that "shop".

SMA is the perfect example of why folks should trust a good mechanic. The other shop, maybe not so much! (you should leave a card in the car so they know where they should bring their car next time!) - they went from someone who didn't know what to do (4 o2 sensors, egr valve, probably multiple trips back and forth, and still having a broken car) to someone who thought about it, saw the pattern diagnosed and fixed it - so maybe an hour or two diagnosing and fixing some wire, and now it's all good!

I like to take the time pulling off ground wires that I can get to and clean them with a rotary tool with steel wheel brush. Remove, clean, and put back. Then use a long needle nose pliers and pull out each fuse from the fuse box one at a time. They look shiny after your done. But wear eye protection to protect your eyes since tiny metal fragments fly off. Sometimes a electronic part will come on you never notice before. The same thing for your battery, alternator, and starter connectors.

Good Job. Enjoy and appreciate your videos. Your logic and humor are fine and fun to behold. Glad you can function as your own "Boss" ... shops & dealers probably hate guys like you ... but your customers love you, I bet! Re: GROUNDS. As an EE/Mech Eng. I am NOT a "Mechanic", but own, service and care for 2 older vehicles. '92 Dodge Caravan & '03 Lexus SUV. The Caravan is (WAS) a "Ground Fault" hangar queen. I joke that I put a new set of Michelins on it and doubled its street value. It costs a small fortune when most shops try to "Chase the Gremlins" ... esp. tough before OBD2 in 1996. e.g. Intermittent cruise control a few years ago; I took apart every connector in the "chain" and tugged on every wire ... one bad crimp came loose! Soldered it & all is solid. Just recently had NO DASH FUNCTIONS ... no lights, no instruments, no chimes. Found 3 bad grounds (1 under the hood and 2 under dash), PLUS a cold solder joint on connector leg inside the Body Control Module. The van (like its brethren) would have been scrapped years ago if a "regular" owner had to put up with the debilitating frustration and inane expense of taking it to "Stealerships" or local shops. NOT everyone can do / will do what you do ... as for "regular" shops these days, they just mimic the dealers in price and action ... and kiss things off ... can anyone here (as you point out) say: shotgun parts ... then give up after humongous charges for NOT fixing things? As for my "almost pristine" '03 Lexus SUV, bought it a year ago with 112K on the clock. Including the 120K Service, I have now spent ~ $1,100 on it for parts & materials. Dealer / Local Shops would have charged well north of $5,000! I will stop now! Thanks again for what you do. John in the Northwest

Not likely sad to say, there will always be an abundant supply of ignorant flapstacks who have zero problem paying 1200.00 bucks for a brake job or 1000.00 for a tuneup or 150.00 bucks to change oil or 3000.00 dollars for a antilock brake sensor or ect.................Mr.O is one of so very few who are honest which in this day an age is a lost concept. This goes for mechanics, plumbers, roofers, electricians, landscaping, dental, every corner is corrupt as it was written many years ago that it would be so.

@@guyazbell7437 - apparently you don't know many mechanics. I been doing this for 40 years and I can recall only two mechanics who I know would cheat people. Some shops are expensive on their labor rate and parts mark up but they're not cheating people.

@@meabob obviously, there are a lot of dishonest mechanics out there the cheap people. I have lost count of how many videos Eric has posted on his channel exposing other shops for screwing customers. There are a lot more dishonest mechanics out there than you think. let me correct what I said, Eric does not expose the shops for screwing people. Give me really points out that there is some random shop in upstate New York that is screwing a customer and then sending the vehicle to him. He is an honorable man though, and does not give the name of the unscrupulous and dishonest shop that is screwing the customers.

@@meabob You can bet that other shop will charge the vehicle owner for all the good parts that were replaced, their hourly labor rate to replace said good parts, plus mark up SMA's bill and pass that on to the customer too.

Parts swappers have cost consumers millions over the years. Paying a mechanic to guess doesn't lead to customer satisfaction but rather mistrust of the auto repair industry. With cars becoming more and more complex it's only going to get worse.

Eric O. - Long time, first time. Huge fan of how you approach diagnosing problems. Your honesty and integrity set you apart. While out with wife and kids I commented about a guy we saw on a motorcycle here in Illinois wearing a SMA shirt, my wife in return surprised me with one. Anyhow I'd like to ask you to consider making a video with Louis Rossmann on right to repair. I think it's a fit with what you do. Just think your audience would care about right to repair if they knew about it. Heck if McDonalds new about it they'd fix their ice cream machines.

Eric you are a pro, you check all the codes, think all the errors on these sencors can come at once, No chance. What do they have in common, the ground. Data is good, but you have to think, how does the data work, if it is wrong on No. 1, it will be wrong on No. 2, 3, etc. I hope you teach your mechanics this. Your workshop will be unbeatable. 💥💥💥💥💥

Hey Eric. my Heap Compass also had the money codes on one of the two O2 sensors and it turned out to be a bad ground, after I paid to put in a new sensor, which I didn't need. I got a good electrical mechanic who fixed me up. Two years now and no reoccurring problems. I know they use a lot of salt on the roads in the northeast. The next time you head to Wilbert's in Bath I have a parts list for you to pick up and mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take care Coach. Happy Holidays to the fam.
