Something that is an advantage for us in the US is that the connection on the cord where it plugs into the machine is the same plug that we have as our electrical wall sockets so that it can be used as an extension cord. Many times when I wanted to type at the dining room table I had my vacuum next to me with the typewriter plugged into it.
The Kirby Tradition did indeed have 2 wands-one straight and one curved. My aunt had this cleaner years ago, and I became quite familiar with its various attachments. Like all Kirbys made since April 1965, it has a self-selecting two speed motor which automatically shifts to the higher speed with the attachment hose in place. So it will be somewhat louder during above-the-floor cleaning.
21:58 that is to put coins in when vacuuming if you find them on the floor or in the couch crevices in the slot at the top and when you are done you remove the back cover and collect all your money :)
The vibration will be down to a worn brush roll. These early brush rolls had primitive bearings which wear more readily and only one set of brushes around the circumference. Replacements are available with enclosed cartridge ball bearings and two sets of brushes around the circumference. You can use these with the currently available knurled belts. If you do replace it set the brush roll such that the bristles evenly protrude 1/8” below the rug plate. Once replaced and properly set up it will make the cleaner easier to push, reduce the vibration & improve the performance :-)
The rug plate sounds like it needs a new gasket, that is what the 'rattle' noise is. I would replace the gray Lexan fan with the newer, white Kevlar fan. It is far more durable. The motor sounds great, otherwise. If the bristles are still good on the roller brush, I'd clean it and keep it. The screw heads should face outward, meaning you should see them when you are looking under the nozzle. You can adjust the length by evenly turning both of the screw heads clockwise. A new belt, bag and a good clean and it'll be like new :-)
I started to wash the bags at the Landry mat and throw some plastic attachments in with it. Don't put metal into a top loader it will break the washer. I broke the washer fun the agitates
The belts that you have should fit. You can replace the brushroll with the roller that came with the Legend and since it has two extra rows of brushes it will clean more smoothly and much faster. The plastic fans will crack with age but the replacement fans are now Kevlar and won't need replacing afterwards.
How did I miss this one Roger being the enthusiast I am . This was the 1st model to offer the disposable bag or the shakeout bag . Still on the hunt fir a Kirby tradition 👍👍
The reason for the handnut in Bach of the handle is that there is a coin slot above on the top of the plastic piece wherein you pick up your change that you find on the floor to save up for your next Kirby.
This is like the one my mother had. It didn't use a bag inside. You just opened that thing on the bottom and shook the stuff out. I fought that thing all of the time getting it all set up, but the floor polisher was great on a house with all wood floors and the carpet shampooer wasn't bad.
It obviously needs a good clean amd possibly a new brush roll etc but it looks good. Looking forward to the follow up video to see what additional tools come with this Kirby.
If your handi butler has the drill bit attachment you can buy pad sets to hook up to the drill and then you won't have to buy a drill and use the Kirby to polish the Kirby
Now what a beautiful Kirby! It don't need a lot of work to get it looking and working like it should. People get Kirbys very cheaply and I paid 200€ of my G6 2000 Limited Edition. However I ordered it from the Germany and it was in almost like factory fresh condition. I am not sure would I like to use these non techdrive versions. I am used to very easy to push G6 with the techdrive. Excellent video and this made my day!
I’ve got the same one as this now Roger I’ve had to eat my hat on the whole Kirby thing and in fact I now have 3 (groan) My one like yours here is 1981 dated with the paperwork and has almost all the attachments.great video again
It'll be looking great and sounding better soon I'm sure. That's the thing about these older models, I vividly remember what a pain it was to put things back after switching attachments or whatever. Grandma had the classic 3 and it was enough of a hassle she left it behind when they sold their summer cottage. Now I doubt she'd be able to push the thing long enough anyway to clean the carpets.
Nice Kirby! Doesn't look like it needs to much work either. I really like the big inflating bag on the older models too. Wish they bring it back. By the way that cover on the back of the handle is for coins you find while vacuuming and you can replace the fill tube and bag connector with a twist or F-Style. Those older style bag connectors definitely are a pain.
Kinda fascinated with the fact your find it spooky and evil 😄 Ive got several old kirbys that I collect, but never found them creepy. Do you still keep it in the garage ?
I think rattling noise was the rubber number vibrating. Those old bumpers that were riveted onto the back of the nozzle often made lots of noise as they aged.
It sucks but all aluminum polishes are the same. They all require tons of elbow grease for good results and many hours when done by hand. I’ve tried them all over the years not one of them works better than the other. The older and more sever the oxidation is the harder and longer it takes to get off by hand but it can be done. If you have a high speed polishing wheel and aluminum polishing compounds then it goes by much much quicker. You can even get a Kirby to be shinier than when it was new! However some over the counter polishes have better advantages though. Well at least when it comes to smell and harsh fumes. Mothers is okay but still high in fumes. The blue magic is super strong also. I use one now that actually has been made to smell like vanilla and doesn’t burn your nose or make you high from fumes like the rest. It’s called white diamond and it’s more like a liquid than a thick paste or creme and works exactly the same. You can polish indoors and it works on plastics as well such as headlights and numerous other metals. One thing you can do to prevent the Kirby from tarnish is to apply a cost of car Wal and buff off or even better you can ceramic coat it. This will protect the aluminum from the damaging oxidation from the air as humidity.
You can actually get a mini-emptor to fit as well as the fill tube from a later model. That gives you better airflow but also opens you up to getting he newest type F HEPA bags by just changing the bag adapter. Pretty interesting how you can mix and match those parts.
one you can use the belts you already have from your other Kirby I know this because I own a similar model and newer ones I recommend that you try not to order the headlamp cover when that Kirby is brand-new that's what it should feel like how stiff it is
It is my opinion that an evil entity has inhabited this Kirby vacuum cleaner and now wants to take over my body. I am not concerned with views, I just want people to accept Jesus Christ, the lord God as our creator and the fact we live on a flat motionless plane. Thanks for your comment and God bless you. 🙏🏻
