I would highly recommend getting into listening to audiobooks while you read! I promise you can still annotate, and long books will quickly become much less daunting

I sometimes remember scenes or characters from The Secret History and can’t work out if they really happened in my life or not. That is a sign of a truly amazing author.

Re: feminist theory/philosophy, you have to read Toril Moi: What Is a Woman? is a masterpiece, and her work on Simone de Beauvoir makes her a global expert, if not THE global expert, on de Beauvoir.

The first Murakami I read was, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman. It's a book of short stories and I think it encompasses almost every theme Murakami writes about and is known for. Some of the them are even sections from his whole novels, like Norwegian Wood and Sputnik Sweetheart.

How to Suppress Women's Writing by Joanna Russ is a fun one for looking at women's literature from a feminist perspective. It is a collection of hundreds of quotes from women writers throughout history and looks at how women have to be so much better than men to be remembered (And she points out poc could fit into many of the categories too). And what does better even mean? Each chapter looks at different processes used to discredit books written by the 'wrong' kind of people.

In the Portuguese edition of The Second Sex, the book is divided into two volumes: the first approaches the historical and social context for gender inequality, while the second focus more on the life of women at the time it was written, and on female tropes. Maybe reading it that way is less daunting? You could also approach each chapter as a single essay. Also, I finally bought Montaigne's essay because of your recommendation.

If you also want to read in Dutch, the Belgian author Griet op de Beeck is absolutely amazing! A bit dark at times, but she is an excellent author

I love the Secret History. Recommend the Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis - he went to Bennington and the book is set in the same sort of college environment, although it's a completely different style to the Secret History.

wow, ive never seen brautigan talked about by any youtubers before, he's my favorite author & has such a special place in my heart :) never read anything else quite like him, his writing is very melancholy and somehow childlike and whimsical at the same time. hope you enjoy in watermelon sugar, it's his best imo!

Relate so much to underpacking and being stuck for (2 months now) at my parents. Luckily I have nowhere to be so I can get away with wearing the same three outfits in rotation. South of the border, west of the sun was absolutely brilliant. I am hesitant to pick up some of his more popular books as I’m also a bit meh on magical realism. Hopefully you enjoy Kafka on the shore

I agree with you on women don't owe you pretty, I felt like most of the ideas in her book were recycled cliche #girlboss ideologies, I'm literally forcing myself to keep reading it at this point lol, it did have some interesting takes from her perspective and her personal stories made the book somewhat bearable.

Hi there, if u read "catch & kill," please read "she said" about the same subject from the perspective of two female journalists at the NYT. I don't have anything bad to say about "catch & kill" just feel like the female perspective is a MUST and a good companion read.

I read "Oblomov" when I was a teenager and really liked it. I read it in Russian. So much depends on the translation of course. Hope that you like the translation from Penguin. I used to like Murakami a lot. Read most of his novels. Lately I feel like he might be a bit overrated.
