I remember that era. I was about 10 yrs older than those kids “what’s heavier than Suicide Silence brah brah” lol. Either they stay there in deathcore, move on to hardcore, or burn out. I never heard any that said “shit this deathmetal/grindcore is heavier than *insert band name*!” They all equate CHUG CHUG breakdowns for ‘metal’ and ‘heavy’. Yes! the first two Therion albums are excellent! Absent are the totally fuzzed out guitars, constant D-beats and melody. Just because they're from Sweden and play death metal doesn't mean they play Swedish death metal. I second this, the average listener thinks anything heavier than Master of Puppets is death metal. The vocal pitch does not matter, anything loud and indeciperable is death metal to most people

Primarily death metal is about the vocals, and he is correct to say Slayer is not death metal. However Slayer’s compositions and guitar riff writing influenced a lot of the early American death metal bands. They aren’t death metal but they were a big influence on it.

The ones you mentioned, besides At Dawn They Sleep, are the most Black Metal ones of the record.
