As a Texan I always have to check in on people discovering our boys from El Paso. (Fun bit of trivia: 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O'Rourke, also an El Paso native, played bass in a band with Omar before the latter formed At the Drive In in the mid 90's) These guys were self-consciously challenging, musically. Omar, the bandleader, once commented he "want[ed] to be a needle in the ear of the common man." Their music is designed to be, at times, almost unlistenable, so that the catharsis of their melodic moments can be that much more extreme. In terms of future recommendations, since you're from a proggier background, stuff like "Cygnus... Visimund Cygnus" and "Day of the Baphomets" will probably be right up your alley. The end of this album, "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" is also solid. From their later period, I'm a fan of "Cotopaxi," "Goliath," and "Wax Simulacra." Their first two albums are very Floydian in a "everything flows together as one piece" kind of way, so hearing the songs in context is also recommended. And I would say their first 4 whole albums, which are _DeLoused in the Comatorium, Frances the Mute, Amputecture,_ and _The Bedlam in Goliath_ are all great.

Beto O'Rourke also said, in response to question asked at one of his campaign events (in El Paso, I believe, but I don't remember the exact context), that he would be absolutely thrilled and honored to have TMV play at his inauguration into the White House and any other official white house event they're available for. Can you imagine TMV being the "house band" for the presidential inauguration ceremony. It's the stuff of dreams... I would also encourage a prolonged engagement with the album Frances the Mute, especially if you have a background in prog, as Hollow says (this is the first video of yours that I've seen). It's a masterpiece and I personally think it's their best work. Sort of like a psychotic, avant garde, spaghetti western style jazz fusion lol. If you're a fan of prog epics, Cassandra Gemini is brilliant (and if I were forced to make an impossible decision and pick my favorite TMV song, this would be it). There are more ideas, creativity, and artistic impulses going on in just that one song than a lot bands, past and present, have in their entire discography. At the same time, it's an incredibly meticulous album musically. Edit: here's a link to an article that has a video clip of O'Rourke responding to the TMV question: consequence.net/2019/03/beto-orourke-the-mars-volta-perform-campaign-inauguration/

I hear Zeppelin, King Crimson, Floyd, Rush and Santana throughout this record. Prog with a punk attitude. Overwhelms the senses.

Absolutely love the Volta! For a prog feel I would say check out “Vismund…Cygnus Vismund” or even “Day of the Baphomets” for some crazier psychedelic stuff 💜

Def gotta check out "take the veil cerpin taxt". One of my favorite mars volta tracks and a real trip especially since it sounds a bit like their older hardcore stuff from their other band "at the drive in".

You’ve now found the greatest band to ever tickle your earbrain. Enjoy the rest of your listen. Each album is phenomenal. Frances the Mute is an absolute masterpiece.

I'd suggest "Drunkship of Lanterns," "Goliath," or "Cygnus.... Vismund Cygnus." "Drunkship of Lanterns" is their piece de resistance IMO.

I feel like I'm late to the party, but here I be so: Cicariz ESP is very heavily one of those songs that quite honestly should always be listened within the context and its place on the album. On it's own it can feel a bit disjointed and "artsy fartsy", but when you hear it as part of the ride that is the second half of Deloused in the Comatorium, it makes absolute sense. Geat reaction though, even if the song was not quite the best possible introduction to the band. In fact on this album I'd have gone Son Et Lumiere into Interiatic ESP as the introduction to the band. That's right, the first two tracks of their first album. They really came out that strong.

Flea also plays trumpet (his first instrument) in this album, if I'm not mistaken.

Flea is on bass throughout the whole album, save for one track. He plays trumpet on "The Widow" off the album after this, Frances the Mute. John Frusciante's on "Take the Veil", "Cicatriz", and "Drunkship of Lanterns", as well as "L'Via L'Viaquez" (Frances) and most of 'Amputechture', 'Bedlam', and 'Octahedron'.

No, listen to de-loused cover to cover, the way it’s supposed to be enjoyed.

Hello, and great reaction! Since you've mentioned Pink Floyd, here's a fun fact: The album art from "De-loused in the Comatorium" was made by Storm Thorgerson, who also did almost all Pink Floyd album covers. Greetings from Chile :)

I used to listen to them when they were called at the drive in. I love this song but why does the contusion have a suture? I just had surgery and I guess I thought they were more for lacerations.

I'm a big fan of Jon Theodore's drumming on the first 3 albums. That dude is great.

Please check out Soen. Great band from Sweden. Their drummer is the former Opeth drummer (Martin Lopez) when he left, he started Soen. You can hear all the influences in every song. Obviously they have an Opeth Rhythm (ex-drummer and all. Lol) no harsh vocals though. I would suggest OPAL it’s a groovy song. If you want Pink Floyd or Gary Moore style checkout LOTUS by them also.

i’m not gonna go so far as to assume they were inspired by king crimson, but there is definitely a connection there, at least as a listener

unless numbers 49 through 1 on that list of best modern prog songs are other mars volta songs, cicatriz should be higher on the list
