Wow, I had this exact same car (left hand drive); same wheels, interior, everything. Had it for many years and many, many miles. Besides utter comfort (gliding instead of driving), it had the best brakes I've experienced on any car. That actually saved my and a friends life late one night when a lady decided to fully stop so she could reverse (!) to the exit she had overshot on an 80MPH road. We had a truck besides us and all I could do is brake and hope for the best. We made it with 3 metres to spare. So thank you C5 for all the adventures and comfortably safe trips.

@@daddypeet257 hardly. It’s a well known fact that these cars were uninspired in their styling (so frumpy after the stylish Xantia sales success vs Mondeo) and what’s more the electrics are poor quality and reliability overall is a bit of a joke. This is why they were a sales flop here in the UK and why Citroen worked so hard to produce the gorgeous (yet still unreliable) C5 mark 2; a bit like comparing George Clooney on a good day to dearly beloved Ken Dodd with a hangover!! 😆 Regardless of whether I know Ian or not personally, he’s a nice guy and like any other man buying one of these on a budget I’d advise him to drop it like a hot potato and buy either a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for the same budget. Far, far superior engineering with actual integrity and yet they still cost buttons. Whatever. They love a crankshaft pulley, always buy OEM, aftermarkets last 5 minutes. It shouldn't be crashy over potholes, if it is then the spheres need changing, they are sublime over all roads and fly over road humps without issue. If there's a lot of vibration on the engine check the engine/gearbox dogbone mount underneath. I had a 2.2hdi so some things may be slightly different.

Hell yes! My family owns the mk1 C5 sedan from new so I'm looking forward to videos. We're looking to replace it so I might inherit it. We had it for 20 years now and it served the role of a comfortable diesel family barge great. Truth be told, it's becoming a bit of a problem these days but hey, which 20 year old car isn't.

A Persian carpet made in France, that's a good description for the C5. Next video, this is our caravan for the coming summer vacation.

Lovely car HubNut, the estates look great. Its funny I was thinking of getting one, so we will see how this one goes! I'm pretty sure they are utterly reliable. There was a V6 estate for sale near me, but it sold pretty quickly probably due to the rarity. Even normal ones you don't see often and I get excited when I see them!

Yes! I guessed right! The C5 is a soft, wafty lounge chair compared to the Primera. I can't wait to see how you get on. The biggest down side is all the electronics that can go wrong. Good luck with Chloe the C5 ;-)

I didn't like the front when it came out, but it's grown on me over the years. I always liked the rear styling of the estates. I hope you will enjoy it for a long time.

I TOLD you to get one of these to replace Rita! I have a 2010 C5 X7 (the sedan that looks like a hatchback) with the 2.0l 160 ps HDI 16. That goes well enough! It also has Hydractive 3+ which works as advertised. I get around 1000 km from a 71l tank, commuting on 60-80 km/h signposted roads. You have plenty of room now for the HubNut clan, and you don't need a caravan, you can sleep in the car! I look forward to more of your adventures.

Great choice. I've been considering one of these for a while, but the facelift version.

I owned a C5 2.2 auto for two years really good roomy car it averaged 50ish mpg it was on a51 plate only had to go when it developed suspension leaks it was going to cost more than the car was worth to repair it that was six years ago, would still be running it today if that haven’t have happened.

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for big Citroens. Never owned one but I really liked the first model C5. Looking forward to this journey with you. The bag thing. I’m so glad that you can show others like yourself (eg me) that doing extremely daft things can happen to any of us. I’m very capable of acts of extreme incompetence at a moments notice. Keep doing what you do 👍🏼

On the off chance that anyone's boot button (to raise/lower) doesn't work, you can cannibalise one of the rear door window switches to fix it. I fixed mine that way, it's a bodge, but it works, the buttons themselves are rare/expensive on eBay where as the window ones are more available (or free if you nick one from in the car)

Hi Mr Hubnut, so far I’ve owned four C5’s from 1.6 to 2.2 diesels. In my humble opinion the 2.2 was uneconomical and the 1,6 the best ! My last one was great 1.6 hdi face lift estate, I managed over 70 mpg on a run & 45-50 ish on normal driving. They are great cars and for such a big , comfortable one they do handle well. I’d like another one but need seven seats but you never know!! Keep up the great work Ian. 👍👍

sadly Ian, it doesn't have air con, just a button marked "Auto". Iv'e had mine for about 7 years, it replaced my Xantia. The C5 is a great car for "Lounging" around the streets, and if you push it can surprise you. MPG averages out around 50-55. Engines are bulletproof, mines done around 134,000, doesn't use oil and quite quiet. Soundproofing is excellent. Rust isn't a problem as the shell is galvanised. Problems to look out for, are, front calipers can seize on, internal door handles break off ( you'll find the door won't open from inside on the first attempt and someone not used to this will pull harder and break the handle, but if you immediately try again "gently" it opens fine ) the crankshaft pulley wears out and can cause a loud ticking as its dual mass. Armrests are strange, if you move them slowly, they lock properly. All in all the C5 is a very strong car (mines been crashed into several times and written off but structurally its sound.

Ha! Cheapskate air con. Amazing. EDIT - No, checking the spec, it definitely did have Automatic Air Conditioning when new. Suspect it's just run out of gas. Question is how long ago?
