Well, I've seen other videos made by fans in relation to Sarah and Jareth relationship. The movie The Labyrinth was one of my favorite movies from the 80's. I saw it when I was 22. Even though the movie was made for young adults, I still loved it. In this video I throw in my theory about what the deal is between Sarah and Jareth. Enjoy.

The reason Jareth responds to Sarah's "It's not fair!" remark the way he does ("You say that so often I wonder what your basis of comparison is") is because she does say it on multiple occasions throughout the movie, so I don't think that works as evidence for Sarah being forced to relive her supposed failure at the labyrinth over and over again. That seemed to be what your theory about Sarah not really leaving the labyrinth hinged on. As for Jareth being attracted to Sarah due to a previous romance with a woman bearing similar features, I don't think the movie was trying to suggest that with the pictures of the couple on Sarah's mirror and in the scrapbook. In the beginning of the film, as the camera pans over Sarah's room, we see various objects that will later make an appearance in the labyrinth, such as the MC Escher picture of the stairs on her wall. We also see objects that foreshadow the appearance of characters in the labyrinth, such as the aforementioned pictures of Sarah's mother and a man resembling Jereth. I think this just points to Sarah's environment being the basis for how the labyrinth and its inhabitants took form, as in a lot of what Sarah sees in the labyrinth is taken straight from her subconscious. After all, this is Sarah's story, not Jareth's.

That is a memorable line though “ you say that so often, I wonder what your basis for comparison is” , it sounds like Jareth is trying to assault Sarah’s ego by talking to her like an adult talks to a child. ( lots of people will try and do this to you in everyday life to try and make you assume the child role, don’t let the bastards get away with it).I watched an interview with Bowie saying he was given quite free reign with what Jarreth said and did, so I would imagine it was a line he made up, but who knows.

Some believe that Jareth and The Goblin City was a manifestation of Sarah's imagination based on a book that she emmersed herself in called The Labrynth... Not only was Jareth .. the King of this mythical place but he could also take different forms ( The Owl , specifically) to enter reality... which is how he discovered Sarah ... I believe during his trips to reality is when he became infatuated with her and her Love for the story ... that he was willing to do anything to please her ... even kidnapping her little brother because that is what she asked for out of anger ... In pleasing her .. he thought that he could gain her love , respect an alliance. .. when this didn't happen .. he became cruel and spiteful and made it difficult for her on her quest to retrieve Toby ... His cruelty wasn't Evil .. but based on Heartbreak , I believe ... even after she rescued Toby and went home , Jareth continued to watch over her ... I believe he met his match in her in some way , as far as challenge , not to become enemies or seek revenge ..but a mutual guardedness based on respect and duty .

Jareth ain't evil at all, He was the one who made Sarah realise life ain't about what we want all the time, Like... come on girl, He turned the world upside for you and it still not enough? He just wanted to be loved in fact, letting her go was a proof of that. He could trap her in his kingdom forever, But she refused his feelings and he accepted her choice and took her back home with her baby brother. She kinda grows up in mind thanks to Jareth and that was amazing writing and character development, Her whole journey was not just to save Toby, But to learn and save herself of being selfish and cruel with a innocent baby because of her father and her stepmother forever.

What I'm wondering about is how Jareth knew Sarah from the git go because at the very beginning of the movie, even before Sarah asked the King to take her brother the owl was already spying on Sarah. At the beginning of the movie, we have David Bowie posed with her mother like you pointed out in your video. I now start to believe that her mother left her husband for Jareth, then for whatever reason Jareth lost her mother as well - just like her father - so that's why he is pursuing Sarah now. I never had a movie making me wonder like this. I must say that Bowie in Jareth's role was not only perfect but soooo handsome!

The Owl is one of the forms that Jareth would take to enter Reality. That is how he knew Sarah ... Sarah was unaware that he was indeed real ... but because of her knowledge of the story .. she knew what Jareth was capable of , which is why she was resistant to his persistence... even after she was successful in getting Toby back .. Jareth still continued to watch over her

I also kind of feel like the labyrinth took The never ending Story approach. Because the story was so real to her it became real (when she was on the bridge explaining how the goblin King fell in love with her at the beginning it became real) and that she created sort of her own universe which became her reality. 🤷

I imagine it being kind of a Candyman scenario. The “Labyrinth” story has always and will existed. It has ALWAYS BEEN SARAH. in sort of a time bending-fate kinda way, their story exists outside of time and will happen again and again for eternity. She might not even be real. She has the book from the beginning and already has a strange attachment to it, despite the fact it seems like a really obscure play. Anyway, thats just my interperatation. Sorta seems like a relationship that surpasses the laws of time. (its only forever, not long at all.)

I need another example or two to get on board with this theory, but it's definitely interesting! And I think I've seen the video you're talking about. It's always good practice to cite your sources, so if you can find it again, maybe share the link? YAY DISCOURSE

well there is some wrong arguments, if you read the comics you can see that jareth isn0t a fae. Also about the past romance there is some of true

-_- Why don't people understand context clues... Sarah fell asleep and was dreaming about her play that she was practicing at the beginning of the movie... That's why all of the elements in her dream are parts of her room.
