Good lord, those stems are layer out PERFECT!!! I’d love for you to cut a unit I’m shovel logging on

Man, that's high praise indeed, thanks! I appreciate it. I'm no shovel logger, but have to fill in from time to time. It's fun for me to occasionally swing the wood I've cut. I feel like I'm doing a good job cutting if I never have to heel a bunch, just grab and swing! We're all in it together, so what I do impacts the shovel, what he does impact the processor and down the line. I figure everything I can do to make things go smoothly helps us all. Call it what you like, craftsmanship, skill - I call it pride in a job well done. Thanks for noticing. Good loggin to ya brother!

Went by this unit tonight. Looks a lot different with all of the sticks gone.

That's for sure. It is a shame that the stand got hit so hard by the ice storm. Like I said in one of the earlier videos, it was a healthy patch with good form and was ready to put on some growth for the next ten years or so. It was the hardest hit of the ice damaged stands I've cut recently, seems like fifty percent or more of the stems had lost their tops. It's funny though, when my wife was flagging the roadside for me she had three different neighbors stop and say how much they liked the view! Pretty unusual, generally folks are not appreciative.

Copy. They are wood hungry! That's ok though, Maryann hardly breaks a sweat keeping wood ahead. Thanks, be safe out there!

So will everything get hoechucked to the road for the processor? Seems like a skidder would be better for moving drags around, but I am confined to an East Coast way of thinking. Definitely more than one way to skin a cat!

I imagine the stumps make skidders impossible..

That's a good question, one that comes up a lot. Skidders definitely have their place, I'm pretty intrigued by the 635 Tigercat's possibilities. The main issue with skidders in the PNW is the fact that it rains 9 months out of the year. That, coupled with the slopes and soils we work on make utilizing them difficult year round. This was a creamy unit and would lend itself to ground based skidding for most of the wood. But there were some pretty tough spots on the low end dropping into a canyon and a steep bowl and ridge. The logging shovel in the video, a Link Belt 5040, makes it look easy uphill or down. It's got 50' of reach and 72" T-Mar grapples and you can really move a lot of wood in a hurry with it. 400' in an ideal world would be the average skid distance, downhill thank you very much, but we all wish that was the case! Sometimes we are three times that, no fun but still productive. Cody goes everywhere I cut, and has a good time doing it! Plus when he's done he can pile the unit and fluff up the trails to prepare it for planting. A 635 with bogies and tracks reduces ground disturbance in poor conditions and is becoming more common, but most industrial landowners won't allow 4 wheel skidders on their ground. Hope that answers your question, thanks for asking and watching. Good cuttin to ya, be safe.

The short ones left standing habitat trees?
@thedailylogger
@thedailylogger 2 года назад
That's a good question. They are habitat trees, specifically for hawks and birds of prey. They are a bit of a pain in the neck to incorporate into a unit but they are very worthwhile. All the units I cut are replanted, it's a law, and as the seedlings get established there's a period where generally there is quite a bit of grass growing. Mice like to live in the grass and they love to eat the sweet bark of the seedling, which can and does kill them. So by providing these snags for the hawks they can hunt more mice and protect the future forest. I pay attention to them coming and going from timberlands and it's amazing how many raptors I see sitting on the snags waiting for dinner! Thanks for asking, and watching. Be safe!

@@thedailylogger We have to do the same up here, "snag trees" for habitat along with all the other must do's for the state Forestry requirements now. For sure a pain for the cutter but can see the benefits almost as soon as they start cutting.

@@MountainCuban Copy. Where in the world are you located? Wildlife trees and snags and such are good ideas and work well for what they are planned for, it's just that sometimes the engineers don't locate them or design the shapes well to allow for efficient logging.
