I landed another very cool kit for my Jo-Han collection. However, this one is a little mysterious. Email: ericsmodelgarage@gmail.com P.O.Box: Eric's Model Garage P.O. Box 301 Lima, Ohio 45802
The original release in the late 60's early 70's had the emergency light lenses tinted and when soaked in oven cleaner they became clear lenses which enabled you to see all the nice details inside the domes.
Im going to have to dig mine out now. I remember it was molded in blue, but i don't remember the glass being tinted. It's been 10-15 years since I've looked. It would be so cool if someone could find these molds again!
In 1992 I was unemployed in London and there was a model shop with the whole range of jobs Han I purchased lots and always painted them in Datsun Color’s as they looked cool on models, I still have some made and a few I have not, I need to re make them as an older 55 year old now, and get then right, I never made the engine / motor, as I glued the hood down , cheating but gave me more time to build another
They are just as fun to restore as they are to build the first time around. They're definitely some of the best kits to keep around. Thanks for watching!
Yes, I believe that's correct as this kit was, to the best of my knowledge, produced to be presented as a police car. I had made mention of the door pulls and cranks in case one chose to build it as a daily driver and that it would lack those details for that purpose. Thanks for watching!
My buddy had one of these in 84 and That car was terrifying. Had a sprayed over sheriffs star and a searchlight. It howled like a beast when floored and he would giggle.Crazy scary
Interesting to see the instructions mention to use the slant six engine from a Polar Lights kit - a rival company! A police car wouldn’t have arm rests, window cranks etc on the rear doors - they put the criminals in the rear seats, that stops them escaping…
Seville had a lot of the old Johan parts. I sent them over 300 bucks for various kits that I ordered and never got a thing from them. Shortly after they disappeared.
I bought the same kit some years ago. You have me curious about mine. On the plastic wrapping it says 1 of 3000 made on a sticker, but it has all the markings of the original box of the 70s and the box is brown. But here's the kicker, it has the 2002 reproduction model sheet inside and the model build sheet looks like the original, but I can tell it's a reprint. So I can see you have a rare reproduction. My reproduction has all the looks of the original kit, so they did correct a lot of mistakes, including the box. Oh Yah, mine also has a small bar code on the ends of the box. Other than that it's identical to the vintage kit in every way. Glad I seen this video. I was hoping mine was a misprint like yours, shucks! Now I have to look at the two 59 rambler models I have to see if they look like the original packaging.
I bought a couple of these Fury police cars when they re-released them in the early 2000s. Unfortunately quality control was really bad in the factory at the time, and one of the new kits was missing all the chrome.
I think you're pretty much correct re: the origins of this kit. It's from the Okey Spaulding era of Jo-han (Johan) and I believe what he did was assemble these kits using NOS that he acquired when purchasing what was left of the company. This is speculation, but he probably had to print up new boxes, instructions and decals, and decided to change the product number in the process. Is it a vintage kit? Well, it's on the borderline I suppose, but it was certainly made from the same molds as a vintage version -- it's just not as clean as an earlier production kit would be in terms of flash, etc.
I remember seeing these kits many years ago at the hobby shop. Made the mistake of not getting any. Someday I’ll find one. My pops had a 67 in turbine bronze.
Well I think I might have that kit--I have some old johan's --they never had the cellophane wrap on the box-my kits were bought new back in the 80's-they never had the parts wrapped in plastic--this is a mystery-Atomic Models has been showing the johan banner at swap meets
I bought a 68 Fury from E Bay years ago that was cleanly built as a regular 4dr sedan and it was molded in blue which could be the later reissue. I still have and will not part with it.
It's very simple.,.the one you bought is an Oakey Spaulding re-release , not really a big deal , it may have been pieced.together with leftover original Johan parts. Or new parts from old molds .
I’ve never seen this release in my travels. I’d really like to see that flyer again, there’s some odd releases on there that I’ve never seen. The 56 Pontiac & 56 Olds are said to have “simple interiors”. I’ve only seen unassembled promo versions of these without interiors. Then the flyer mentions EZ-203 is a 1975 Olds 442. I have never seen that. Looks like the description mentions stripes and wheels. I’m sure the hood wasn’t modified to resemble a 442 hood.
Have a built I did in the 80s for my father, retired NYPD officer. Have an older kit in my stash to do a better version. Remember to sand off the wheel well trim as it was left over from the original 68 Fury III annual and not offered on the police version. Also New York went to a clear bubble about 1965 or so with yellow, white and red lights inside.
Police cars don't have back door handels inside, They cut them off. I've rode in the back of some when they was giving me a lift home after my car broke down or one time when I slid off into a snow drift.
From experience : I didn't notice missing door handles but I couldn't but notice the missing seats in the back of a Spanish police car. Nothing but bare metal to sit on. Probably too many of those seats had been damaged by unwilling passengers.
I have a kit that’s in blue and tinted glass like yours but the number on the box is GC~1300 , the box is exactly like your friends , and no vacuum glass and old instructions , but has the 2002 flyer , on the box it says Encore limited production 1 of 3,000 good news is I paid $5 for it sealed, interesting thank you for the video 👍
I bought a couple of those in the 90s. They were molded in blue with blue tinted glass. The decal sheet had all the departments shown on the box plus a generic sheriff decal. The decal sheet you show omits the sheriff decals but add Texas DPS decals. I had Cadillac ambulance too and cut it up to make a pickup out of it😅
Would like to see a model kit and diorama show here, perhaps at the Springdale Convention Center near 1-75 outside of Cincinnati, OH. Just hinting and throwing it out there.
I used to have this kit in my younger days. I still have the instruction.booklet if I remember correctly, mine was molded in white plastic. thanks for bringing back some memories, Eric.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing! Just found your channel by accident and subbed from this video alone. 😁 Come by sometime and say hello... Lol LLAP 🖖
My dad built kits a lot when he was a kid and told me Jo-Han was his favorite, by the time I started building in the late 80's early '90s they were long gone. However I remember my dad and me driving around to a lot of different grocery stores in the Eugene Oregon area looking at their model cars and I finally found a Jo-Han that had been on the shelf for a very long time, it was a late 70s Cadillac, it seemed really special to build that kit because before eBay it was impossible to find vintage kits.
@christopher88719 Man, that's a great memory! My dad had a huge part in me getting into model cars. He and I are currently doing a buddy build of the AMT 1966 Buick Riviera. Thanks for watching!
@@ericsmodelgarage Some of my favorite memories of my childhood were hunting for model cars with my dad. I am glad you and your dad enjoy the same stuff as well. It is a great hobby.
I bought that kit back in the late 70's or early 80's. Mine was also molded in blue but I don't remember if it had tinted glass and I think I threw the box away. I built mine as an unmarked detective car being from Chicago. I stripped it a few years ago and need to restore it.. Nice vid by the way
I have two of these police cruiser kits in my collection. I'm a devoted JO-HAN kit collector, unlike my other modeling buds that could care less for JO-HAN. Not big on promos, but kits here. I have at least one of all the kits from `59 to `62.
Hello I got interested in your johan police car I have one molded in green I’ve salvaged a set of stock steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps from one of my 10 revell 68 chargers haven’t built it yet like to see what how yours turns out thank you
Cool kits.1968- 69 Plymouth Fury. I had a real 1 years ago. I have 2 johan kits of it. 1 open original has GC1300 on it molded in blue with green glass. Other is a repop limited edition 1 of 3000 sticker on box under the outer wrapping also has kit number GC1300. Both have address on the box. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend. 😊
Definitely a nice kit to attain Eric. I have an open box version that might be of the same issue with the green glass. Mine didn't have the clear vacuum form. I think there is a year on the corner of the decal sheet.😊 Enjoy the build.
I dont give a f... about when its from,as long as i get it for a decent price and its a kit i want!Have the same one in blue and tinted windows but with the GC 300!!And here in Germany they are MORE then rare then in the US!And i payed about 35 Euros for it!So a standard price for a kit nowadays!Happy as happy can be!😂Have the Rambler, sox and MArtin ,Turbine car and others as well(even 2 AMC Rebels wich 1 i mod to a year earlier))As much as i know about Johan history,if you got a blue one with tinted glass it was a real kit produced by Johan!Whatever date it was sold by whatever company!
That’s really cool to have a limited run kit. Too bad the tooling disappeared, I drove a 68 Fury in high school, should have bought this kit back when they were available.
Nice kit Eric. I bought a few of tge reissues back in 2002. Along with the ambulances. I had the originals as a kid. If your building this Fury then what you paid is about right. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.
My understanding is that, by the end of production and the JoHan company closed, the model molds were pretty much worn out. Which would explain all the warpage and flash on the last kits.
I remember those kits back in the day. I made the mistake of never getting one. Someday I’ll find one. My pops ha a 67 in turbine bronze when I was a kid.
