25 years later and these scenes have me in tears with a pile of tissues on the floor! Utterly heartbreaking the way they killed Ryan off, but he did those scenes so beautifully. I wish they never did that - he was so beloved and had so much story to tell with he & Viki and him & Carl. I have to agree, it is probably what ruined the show. The actors who played Carl & Ryan were beyond phenomenal!

Agreed, NBC fucked up by canceling Another World. All NBC wanted was Days of our Lives anyway. And ironically Days had to go to Peacock streaming services to survive financially.
Even though AW was not cancelled until 1999, I cannot help but think this was the beginning of the end. The powers that be brought in a new executive producer-Jill Farren Phelps-and although she had success with "Santa Barbara", that show was cancelled before AW. She used story lines that worked in other soaps-like the evil twin-but it was too outlandish for AW. Maybe if she had chosen another character other than Rachel-it might have worked. But AW was always a reality based soap with romance and friendship at its core-and Phelps ruined all of that. Killing off Ryan, then Frankie, breaking up John & Sharlene then Matthew and Donna-the foundation of AW was just irreparably damaged. While Ryan's death was beautifully written & acted-earning Charles Keating a well deserved Daytime Emmy in 1996-Vicki & Ryan were so popular that loss literally killed the show. And Anna Holbrook won an Emmy that same year for her acting in the John/Sharlene/Felicia triangle, but that whole story line came out of nowhere. And there did not seem to be any chemistry between John & Felicia. Yet, Keating said in interviews years later that Phelps was the reason why he won the Emmy, and Linda Dano had nothing but raves for Phelps as well. I know the ratings were low, but like the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. As much of a thrill as it was to see Keating's brilliant acting in this story line & his subsequent Emmy win, it was not worth getting AW cancelled. I started watching this show with my mom when I was home sick from school. In the late 80's early 90's I rediscovered it thanks to the VCR and watched it until it was cancelled nearly 18 years ago. I cannot believe this story line aired 22 years ago. It feels like last week. I miss my friends from Bay City every day, so I am truly thankful for anyone that posts any episodes of this great show.
The same thing happened when guiding light killed off Maureen Bauer. Jill phelps didn't seen to understand that killing off beloved characters is what drives viewers away, it doesn't keep them watching.
Nicki Morelli This was definitely the beginning of the end. Ryan's death as well as Frankie's were both huge blows to the show. Strangely enough these two storylines are the two I remember most. They were both done so well, and all the actors involved knocked it out of the park. For as memorable as they are though once the storylines were over it didn't take long to notice the giant sized holes these two characters left behind. The stories were great, but not worth the price we had to pay to get them. I grew up watching this show, and it will always have a special place in my heart. I was devastated when they cancelled it. I thought they'd cancel Sunset Beach before they would Another World. And to top it off they cancelled it only to replace it with the new soap Passions. At least AW had a 35 year built in fanbase. Passions was brand new, and never did well in the ratings. It all seems rather pointless in hindsight,
I agree with the below, and I feel that this storyline was done to punish PMV for leaving at the time. But his acting here is so well done- how he can stay so still is astounding! And ryan's last words to vicky's and ryan's song makes me cry all the time.
I always felt that this killing off ryan was the end dof the Aw we knew, and I met PMV for the 2nd time when they killed off ryan- and he was not happy with this- he told me he felt tbad for ther fans but life must go on for all! I told him he was the best on aw I was sure to tell him that and he thanked me alot/
in reply to nicki here-I did research about your comments here- and jill farren phelps was not brought in to help the show, but to ruin it. the powers to be- at NBC wanted to ruin AW to make room for passions, and the other NBC soaps at the time- area affilates dropped the show on the east coast/ and so they feared NY NBC would do the same so they tampered with the show, starting here to kill off ryan- people always assumed that pMV at the timer left the show because they let go his girlfriend at the time Christine Tucci, but that was not so.I met PMV when he shot these death scenes I live near the studio BTW, and while he never told me that ryan was to be killed off- he did tell me that he was not happy to leave the show, and that he felt bad for us fans who loved hisd work as ryan/ on the bright side at the time PMV was going to be on broadway with 1776/ and he had success in it. Soaps was his calling and that is why he appeared on Guiding Light and OLTL. BTW if anyone has those shows where he is on pleaser post it/ I can't find them anywhere. I read that NBC had alot of problems with all their programming at the time night day, and sports= changes were every where and not good ones- so there is no surprise how Aw was handled at the time. If anyone wants more info on this, just look up on google passions and AW and all this info is there. Lets talk more on this.
the killing off of lucas, ryan and frankie destroyed aw and that is what the network wanted to do on purpose to make room for soaps that were truly lacking in quality and never measured up to the great soap aw!
Really? You didn't mind that it resulted in the destruction of John/Sharlene? Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging. It's just that the Felicia/John relationship didn't really have anything going for it, while John and Sharlene had years of history between them, which were apparently all wiped out by Sharlene being away for a few months. This makes absolutely no sense when you consider that John grieved over Sharlene for almost two years when she was presumed dead.
