More highlights from Round 1 of the King's Champion Tourney at Ansteorra's Spring Coronation of Gabriel III and Sonja III, held by the Barony of Bjornsborg, January 14, 2023.
The winner of the tourney would be the King’s Champion, one privileged and obligated to bear the sword of state in court, to attend the King throughout the reign, and represent the kingdom in instances of single combat.
The tourney was open to all combatants who wished to entertain the Prince with a display of their honor and martial prowess. Combatants had to declare whether they were entering to win or merely to fight in the Prince's honor.
The tourney had two parts, fought entirely with each combatant's weapon of choice. The first part was a bearpit, for anyone and everyone that wished to fight. Each combatant received 2 points for a victory, 1 point for a loss. The victor held the field; double kills meant both fighters left the field and the next two entered. The duration of the first part depended on the number of combatants.
