Answering Controversial Dating Questions 

Hi my lovelies! I had a LOT of requests to answer questions about LGBTQ couples, and even since this episode posted today I got a few very upset messages complaining that I did not include such questions in the episode. In case you were not aware... Avery and I are both straight. It would be HIGHLY inappropriate for us to answer dating questions FOR the LGBTQ community as if we had that experience... we do not. Lol so obviously that is why we did not include such questions, we do not feel it is right for us to speak over their experiences. Hope that makes sense, just... didn't think I needed to explain that in the episode, we genuinely believed that was obvious :D

100% agree...I'm asking about kids, finances, if pets are fixed, etc. sooner rather than later! Why get emotionally invested to find out he is set on having kids and I only want 4-legged kids!?

My best friend started dating our coworker who EVERYONE knew he never wanted to get married or have kids, he was a loyal great guy he just didn’t want to get married or have kids and my best friend was born to be a mom. She knew going in and thought she’d be able to change him if he loved her enough he would change, well 6 months later she knew it was never going to go anywhere she wanted it to and they ended things, it crushed her because it’s not like they left on bad term or there was resentment, she just wanted kids and he didn’t. It broke her heart for MONTHS.

Ok so I love this. I’m 37, assumed I’d be alone and had learned to love it. But I got on Tinder. I was bored. And I had several good conversations, but there was one where we never stopped texting. Worse than my high schoolers. We knew each other before we met. He made fun of my grandads coat as the Macklemore coat, which was devious because I can’t under it, and also that’s key to the story. He’s driving to my small town, and I’m about to meet him at the restaurant. My car battery is dead. Text him one more time if he’s sure he’s not a serial killer, he confirms that he is not, and I go ahead and give him my address. I’m waiting in my car with that coat on. My “adorable” idea was to welcome him with a handshake and introduce myself as Macklemore and we chuckle. I kind of did those things, but in the weirdest way possible. So we have a nervous drive over, and I notice a student bussing which means he immediately notices me. I had warned my date. VERY small. Yes it will drive me nuts. He’s cool, but grabs his fellow hisser which is adorable happy all the time, but also loves tea. The first ten minutes waiting for drinks is spent with my boys bussing the table directly behind us…slowly. Eventually it turned out fine, but when he dropped me off I did say he wasn’t staying over (he lived an hour and a half away and had work but I had to say it), and invited him in to meet my dog. She immediately fell in love head over heels and is a disloyal gremlin. We just talked for 3 hours. He finally started getting so tired. So I walked him out and when we hugged we both felt like…yep. This is the fit. Then I kissed him…I had to know, right? Got that little tingle in my spine, not something a first kiss has done for me before. Literally walked back in and just stood there touching my face daydreaming like some really annoying rom com character. We absolutely got the hard things out date 1. He has three boys and I’ve never wanted bio kids but was open to others…but nervous about being a step mom. He said he didn’t want one, he wanted a partner that has a good relationship with the kids and backs him up…and I can sneak them a cookie every now and then. Perfect! I give my high schoolers a bubble gun and I’m the rockstar that their elementary teachers are. Backgrounds, work life balance, his relationship with his ex (civil and excellent coparents)…it dug deep. He wanted to change the story about meeting on tinder. God knows my mom hates it. But I think it’s funnier to get the questions than to make something up.

Man, I love Avery. It's my favorite when someone on a podcast has the same opinions as I do. I feel represented.

That bit at the ended reminded me of my mom's advice. Figure out someone's flaws & decide if you can live with them. 😂 Because no one's perfect and you shouldn't expect that they'll change. So I remind myself, when my husband is late, again, that I made the decision 25 years ago that I could live with that. 😂 He's otherwise pretty perfect. ❤

I love that, there's just such genuine reactions here. I love how Rebecca says, she wants to be selfish, like she loves her friends kids with her whole heart. but kids just aren't in the stars for her. it's okay to want things, or to not want kids. just be you. y'know?

So, for me about the “big topics” and when you giving them up, I’m agreeing with you two, I think an acceptable question on a first date is like “hey where are you from?” I’m Russian & American, but I think like a russian, in the time we are now, many people would have a problem with that. Im not going to get into wars and politics, but lots of people would have a problem with that. I’d probably be like “hey where are you from?”, let them respond, then be like “that’s cool, I’m Russian.” If they have a problem, they’d voice it, and if they don’t, that’s great.

I love how y'all talked about not wanting kids. My fiance and I also don't want kids, and I feel like we are very very much in the minority with that. It was nice to hear

Regarding prenups and safety nets: It's not even just about "why would I enter a contract/commitment thinking I'm going to break the contract/commitment". Expanding on Avery's point, I feel like a lot of people forget that sometimes awful things just happen beyond either party's control, that can and do end marriages. Couples lose children and can't get past it. They experience supreme hardships such as bankruptcy, sudden disability, mental illness, addiction, etc. It's fantastic when couples can get through these things together and come out stronger for it. But ultimately, the fact is many don't. And that has nothing to do with how much they love each other or trust each other. Sometimes unexpected tragedies and challenges arise that people just aren't able to overcome, or have such wildly different ways of coping with, or they've changed as people in such a big area of their life/relationship like this and are no longer compatible in this area. That's neither of their faults, and neither has to be blamed for it - but it should be prepared for, in case of the worst case scenario, and then forgotten about. Then, if and when it does happen, you were prepared. It isn't wrong or distrustful to foresee not being able to foresee something. Because so many things that can and do go massively wrong, are literally no one's fault and can't be predicted or avoided no matter how committed a couple is to each other. No one knows how they'll actually respond to something like that, or if their responses would actually complement each other's, until it happens.

I love Avery's comment about not fighting your spouse, but FOR each other.

I had someone take me on a date but I was under the assumption it was to get to know each other better as a team. So I assumed our other teammate couldn't go. I unfortunately made a comment about a question from a game on a resturant tablet that probably killed the mood. The question was asking if we were there for a date and I laughed and said "no". The fact that we made plans over text without our other teammate in the chat should have clued me in sooner than almost 10 years later. Please tell the person you ask if it's a date or just hangout with friends. It's not always obvious. Edit: this happened in 2016.

Fun fact, yellow flowers are platonic, white flowers are for "pure" love, and red flowers are for passionate love. Also the different kinds of flowers have slightly different meanings. So a white rose has a slightly different meaning than, say, a white lily. White flowers can also be apologies and representative of grief. I got really into the language of flowers in high school and it's just so fun and fascinating to me.

Valentine’s Day is for friends and families too. What he did was nice. But… he called her a work wife… and there was no trust in that relationship anyways.

In addition to your last sentiments about fighting for each other. At my sisters wedding, the guests were asked to give a piece of advice when signing the guestbook. Two really stuck out to me that I think fits this episode well: 1. Don't go to bed mad at each other, that is to say, don't let the hurt feelings simmer and fester long term And 2. When you are fighting, remember that it's the two of you vs the problem, not the two of you versus each other.

Which was heavily suggested by my grandmother's dad then my grandfather's after a discussion with both my greatgrandfather ' s in the same room before football practice. Her senior year.

At first I was like when people go on dates they should split the check but Rogers and her amazing reasoning made a good point of if you ask someone out you should expact to pay especially if your asking them out in a way like inviting them to appace then you should 100 percent pay because you choose the place.

No, the spouse that the safety net is for NEEDS to know it's available. But she shouldn't have put more money into it I was in an abusive relationship. If I had a safety net, I would have left well before he got me to the point of being life lighted and put in a medically induced coma. He was "fine" ish for the first 5 years.

They were talking about what they thought of as cheating. Typically I would say even holding hands is cheating. It depends on the situation though. I have seizures and I had one today. I can’t see after having a seizure so I had 2 people helping me. One holding my hand to lead me in the right direction and one there in case I fall. Both were guys. I have a boyfriend, but I went with whoever my teacher said to go with. Now in other situations I view that as wrong. To be honest it just depends on the situation and depends on your relationship.

When do u usually film these podcast episodes?

I agree that kids are expensive but it also depends on where you live someone who has a six figure salary is perfectly able to afford to have 5 kids and have them go to daycare and also be able to live a very comfortable life and be able to get first class plan tickets for the whole family but again even through your able to financially that doesn't mean you should have kids if you don't want or are even unsure you want kids then don't have them even if financially that's not an issue kids are a lot of work and are very stressful and if you are not ready for that you shouldn't do that for me personally I really want kids and the goods things out way the bad for me but that's doesn't mean that they do for everyone

The price of daycare seems to me like a good argument against sending your kids to daycare. Not having kids. Inhave 3. They are only as expensive as you want them to be. I spend maybe a few extra hundred a month on expensive months, and the majority of that is food and extra fun stuff

Rebecca, here's the thing. There is not 1 person pre destined for each person. Avery is right, you would not meet. Out of all the possible suitible people for that person however, when you meet one of them and build a relationship whit them, make memories and get comfortable with each other then that person is not suddenly interchangable with the other potential partners anymore. You have actually actively made that person your 1 person. Is that not even more romantic? It's the same with having children. Before you meet the child you already love it, but you do not love it more than any other potential child you could have. But when you actually meet your child and watch it grow up, you come to love that specific child and so that love grows.

My boyfriend paid for our first date and it was transformers rise of the beast. So going to the movies is special for us.

I met my husband on Bumble and he almost ghosted me on our first date. He got into installing a new garage opener at his house and was thinking “oh, it’s getting kind of late, maybe another time…” but he heard this voice in his head “you better f-ing go!” We’re both religious and feel like it was a sign of sorts and it has become this running joke of man, Jesus has some language…. 😂

Here's my opinion on cheating: You as a couple establish your boundaries early, and what you are and are not comfortable with. Either you are willing to work with these boundaries or you are not. If you are not, it's better to cut the relationship before anyone gets too attached. If you find the terms agreeable, continue as you wish. But once you KNOW what your partner thinks is cheating, and you do it anyway even if it seems silly and unreasonable to you: you are still cheating and now you are doing so willfully and with malicious intent. If you know it will upset your partner and you do it anyway, it's essentially cheating. The exact boundaries will differ from couple to couple and talking about this early on should happen more often and be a factor into considering whether or not you will continue the relationship. I feel like communication would ease a lot of issues here.

35:15 What if someone calls you tells you that they are going to say something but that you would get mad so they were going to hang up right after they say it than they say I can’t be friends with you anymore and hang up and don’t say why? Someone very toxic did that to me after constantly choosing other people, people who bullied me, over me.

Dude with the work wife could have avoided the fight if he had just been like "Hey, babe, my friend at work has never gotten a valentine. Are you cool with ...?" And then gf could help him choose. But I'm assuming he valued gf as much.

When I was dating my husband he would pay for everything and even When I tried to pay he would quickly grab the tab from the waiter and hide my purse lol . Once we got very serious and then engaged, we just rotate who paid or split .

The hallmark movies can really mess people up!

It would be selfish to drag kids to do those things when it's not in their best interest. That's the whole of it. It's absolutely okay to realize your life doesn't need kids to be successful. And with the world as it is, more people should.

I know multiple people who joke about a work wife, but frequently the real wife knows about it and knows before gifts are bought for work wife. It is there secrecy that bothers me about that situation.
