I would like to add, why does Kirby not talk in-game? Two reasons: limitations and tradition. At the time, the hardware used was not capable of storing voice lines for characters. For example, as mentioned by writer and programmer, Cockfield (2019), a ‘SNES’ game cart could only hold a capacity of 64 kilobytes, meaning that developers had to limit the amount of sounds they could include in a video game. As technology evolved, presenting these characters as semi-silent protagonists with voice acting, but no verbal dialogue, became a tradition in most Nintendo games, a tradition which Kirby follows. “Nintendo's tradition is that the hero or central character never vocally speaks” states Nintendo producer, Tanabe (2009, p2). hackaday.com/2019/07/31/creative-limitation-and-the-super-nintendo-soun d-chips/ kotaku.com/nintendo-breaks-its-silence-about-silence-5324598

Another thing, HAL has been on record saying they rather keep things approachable than confirm tons of canon details. Making kirby talk would possibly deconfirm KRBAY being canon, which might upset some fans such as myself, they want to keep everyone happy as possible.

kirby loves its tradition lmao, for example K64 started the "cutscene with no words, but the music is timed to what is happening in the cutscene" (well technically KSS did that first, but it's much more significant and noticeable in K64) and every mainline game KSSU onwards uses that as their basis for cutscenes, despite having the capability for voices and even paying well-known voice actors to voice certain game-specific characters

Another fun fact: In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the Sleep description has Kirby say "Just...three more minutes, Mom." This is irrefutable evidence that Kirby has a mother, who is obviously Masahiro Sakurai.

@@TheDExusShow He has what could be classified as a progenitor, but it’s far from exactly being a parent. He might have been raised by somebody however, we don’t know where Kirby was before he blew in on the Spring Breeze. All we know is that we haven’t met them.

Aww, it's always a good day when someone mentions Kirby media outside of the games and anime. Honestly, I think at this point it's less of 'CAN Kirby speak?' and more of a 'SHOULD Kirby speak?'. I love the implications the Drama CDs bring to the table, even if they're not the mainline series; Kirby is a chatty little creature, and their character is full of extroversion. Personally, I think Kirby should speak when the situation calls for it, (given the nature of the way stories are told in the games, it might just be enough for him to emote w/ body language) or at the very least, have it be acknowledged that they can speak. I think the anime tends to sandbag peoples ideas of Kirby talking, but with knowing one of the reasons Kirby only says 'poyo' is because the HNK team wanted to cash in on Pokemania hype for marketing at the time just makes me want to embrace a chatty Kirby even MORE.

I always thought that he can, but that he's a silent protagonist like Link (they interact with people but the speech is never shown). It would be weird if he was able to think in full sentences in Epic Yarn, have his own heart speak while also having a pretty deep thought at the end of Mass Attack and not be able to speak himself. Before the anime, there was no doubt about his ability to talk. It seems like that show really had a big influence on how the characters were perceived

I know my headcanon isn't exactly revolutionary, but I imagine Kirby can speak, but is more expressive, so speaking is short and to the point. Kirby's implied to speak in Forgotten Land, though Elfilin repeating Kirby's name when they first met.

Funny how Kirby in game is more talkative when less conscious. I knew Kirby could speak mostly because of Milky Way Wishes. How the hell is someone who can only speak in small phrases supposed to make a wish? I always took Kirby as a person who could speak but just doesn't really find a need to. I like the idea that Kirby is this hyperactive, hypertalkative ball of energy but I prefer him being someone who focuses more on body language and speaks when it feels necessary.

About freakin' time someone made a video clearing all of this up! While it's true that Kirby cannot speak full sentences in the continuity of Kirby Right Back At Ya, the other incarnations of him are shown to be fully capable of speech in other media like the light novels, mangas and the mainline game canon. It's just that, like with Mario and Link, we don't really hear Kirby's side of the conversation when he, say, tells Elfilin his name in Forgotten Land for example. That's just because he's a silent protagonist! And yeah, Kirby's personality in the 1994 Kirby Drama CD is my go-to personality for the character; he's just a hyperactive little kid who likes eating, sleeping and being with his friends, and I like him alot. He's my blorbo! Well, him and Klonoa, who... is also fully capable of speaking, though you don't need to dig deep for that. All in all, a video like this was a long time coming, and I'm super happy that you've finally decided to take matters into your own hands here, DExus. Nice work here! Oh, and while I've been referring to Kirby with he/him pronouns throughout this comment (I dunno, I'm just more used to it, seeing as how he's referred to as such in English-speaking media), I don't mind that you've been noticeably using they/them pronouns for him here. No matter what pronouns we use, he'll always be our pink hero of Popstar!

In Kirby's Adventure, the pause screen for the parasol power says something to the effect of: "The sun shines on this parasol of mine. Where I walk my enemies balk, and I float slowly down." (this is from memory, so wording might be a little off) The point is, this appears to be a description of the power from Kirby, themself.

Moretsu Pupupu Hour unironically has THE best characterization of Kirby I have seen from any Kirby media. The contest is not even close. I really dislike talking about misinterpretations and misconceptions (they're just not fun to discuss), but the anime, despite being completely non-canon, unfortunately had a huge influence on the general perception of Kirby. (Yes, some aspects of the anime such as Meta Knight's sword Galaxia inspired the games, but this means nothing when the anime is a completely separate universe, continuity and canon) That being said though, this leads to a massive pitfall that I find people tend to fall into - as devastating as the legacy of the anime may be to the overall perception of the series, its story and characterization, this isn't a reason to dunk on the anime and the people who like it. Feel free to dunk on or praise the anime for the qualities it has, but judging it for the influence it had beyond its control is just silly, and this is coming from a person who is extremely anti-objectivity (long story, will not elaborate). If someone's favorite interpretation of Kirby is Anime Kirby, even if one might disagree with that opinion (I know I very much disagree with that opinion), there is no point in fiercely arguing why so-and-so's opinion is wrong and so-and-so'a opinion is right. My suggestion would be to try to explain the reasoning behind one's view and try to understanding the reasoning behind the other's view, and maybe if one feels strongly about the subject, one could even make a video such as this one. -go read the unofficial translations of mopupu its such a fun gag manga series-

@@TheRealSuperKirby the problem with arguing "is rbay canon" (or trying to disprove kirby theories in general) is that the kirby series loves to be extremely vague about basically everything (maybe it's to allow for room to insert headcanons, maybe it's because kumazaki think it's funny - point is that the story of kirby is vague and has not one concretely correct interpretation) no matter how many arguments (or "evidence") one brings up, there is usually enough leeway/doubt that it is not concrete/decisive enough, and this only gets worse when a theory is used to support another theory, as many assumptions have to be made with many possible instances of misinterpretation, it's just not fun i personally believe that rbay should not ever be used as evidence for analyzing characterization/story/worldbuilding etc in the kirby series, but (as ive just explained) trying to justify/prove this is such a headache i just dont care too much at this point - if you want to believe the anime is canon, you do you and each to their own

@SCoreReMake yeah, kumazaki in an interview has turned down making a concrete kirby timeline to be "approachable to everyone" as in not deconfirm individuals headcanons. I'm completely open to KRBAY being non-canon, and even thought I found something that confirms that recently and was ready to bite the bullet (it turned out wrong though) I just don't like it when people say it not being canon is a fact, because it's not.

Correction for 3:38: the manga Moretsu Pupupu Hour (or however else you choose to translate it) came after the anime. Even without checking its date, you can judge this by seeing that in the first volume a lot of the cast debuted in Kirby: Squeak Squad (2006). You do mention that immediately after.

I like to believe Kirby's "hi" is supposed to be the English word. Or even both actually depending on the context. Not only is it accompanied by Kirby waving and was probably done to reference Kirby's old habit of waving at the screen in the older titles like Adventure, but before Smash 64, Kirby actually did say "hi" to the audience in the credits of Kirby's Avalanche of all things, a game intended purely for America. Granted Kirby does say a lot of out of character stuff in the game's dialogue, so I can see why it was skipped over.

... Are you seriously gonna count "Hai" but sleep on the entire vocabulary of the JP Version of the Kirby anime? The 4kids version cuts most of this out, but the JP version not only had Kirby cry out his attack names (e.g. "Sword Beam!," "Mirror Cut!," "Fry Pan Service!"), or some of his Kirby abilities (e.g. "Stone Kirby!"), but we also hear him say actual words, such as "Picnic," "Barbeque," "Suika" (melon), "Iya iya iya iya iya!" (No no no no no!), "Yuki!" (Snow), and probably the wildest word Kirby has ever spoken... *"Homo?"* (I'm not even joking. It's episode 86, where Kawasaki meets his old friend from cooking school. It makes sense in context.) And those aren't even words that Kirby's repeated from other people. (You reaaaaaaally should've finished that video from the beginning.) Meanwhile, Kirby 64's official JP website has quotations from the characters in their bios. And Kirby does, in fact, speak! "Hello, I'm Kirby! I met Ribbon on a starry night. (Is this fate?) With my new move, "Copy Ability Mix," I can handle any adventure! For Ribbon's sake, I'll join forces with my Pop Star friends to find the Crystals!" Compare with Waddle Dee, who has a quote, but only of what he "appears" to be saying, implying that he can't speak due to not having a mouth. And while it's definitely not canon, the western-exclusive Kirby's Avalanche has him talk, but he's such a rude little boy.

I'm glad you didn't talk about Kirby's Ghost Trap! People like Nintendo Unity always use it as a reason to make the idea of him speaking full sentences feel like a bad decision when that game has one glaring flaw: It's just a reskin of Puyo Puyo. Of course Kirby would act out of character there!

Funfact: For America, Kirby is usually seen as a he/him Japan, however, sees them as nonbinary (I _could_ be wrong about this! I’ll have to check!)

Not necessarily! Nonbinary is a very western (and new) concept! However yes kirby is gender neutral! Gender neutral can also allow for interpretation as male or female i some cases!

He says hi and Poyo. That’s all he should say. I just feel like he doesn’t need to as I can already understand his personality and what he’s thinking in without it. Odd sounds, Poyos and hi are fine, but I think having him speak full sentences just takes the fun out of it. There are many characters who say even less than he does, yet are world renowned and great. Mannerisms, grunts, body language and what not are great at conveying what a character is thinking, without the use of dialogue at all. It’s more fun to use them than dialogue at times. But hey, that’s just what I think. Poyo.

You fool! there was a whole episode where dedede tries to make saying poyo illegal, and asks kirby if poyo means everything, to which kirby responds of course with a resonding "poyo!" Clearly meaning yes, so poyo is a stand in for every word ever just like hai. Also as for sleep kirby, since he's sleeping and it's not sceen outside of pausing, those are just kirby's thoughts, and babies are still capable of thoughts, further more haltmann's pause screen which is a quote from haltman is written with quotation marks, this isn't, there's nothing to even implied the text is from kirby, the nameless narrator has been making personal and comedic remarks for a while, (Edit: nvm some of them mention "how to wake me up" so it's definitely coming from kirby) and if these are to be taken at 100% face value, that means kirby had a mom, which would go against everything we know about kirby's origin and open a whole can of worms we dont need. Also elfilin has this wierd quirk of reading facial expressions instead of communicating, and the only 2 he does this with are clawroline (a character whose entire conflict is she can't talk) and kirby. Thats a pretty big nudge for kirby not being able to talk in one of the most important games for canon lore.

Great video! You got to the bottom of that one!! I think the anime gets a bad wrap in part because of the statements said by Sakurai-San. Kirby seems to have the same, friendly, eagerness to help, naive, goofy, chill and courageous personality he has in games just packaged in a much less experienced veneer. I do disagree about Kirby being hyper however. If anything all the lounging Kirby is show to do in the games gives the impression he is more chill, then Hyper. You see Kirby laying in a hammock / beach chair or sitting / sleeping in a meadow more often in the series as opposed to dancing with Chu-Chu or running from DeDeDe and Bandee with Strawberry shortcake. Of coarse you are more than allowed to have your own take as the games are open enough for either or both of our interpretations to hold true. Kirby's depiction as a character in the Dark Matter Trilogy (Esp Kirby 64) is the reason why I love those games as Shinichi Shimomura had a firmer grasp of Kirby's character than either Sakurai-San or Kumazaki-San. Especially Dreamland 3 where most of the Animal Friend animations with Kirby looked like friends joshing around as opposed to coordinated attacks. The concept of Kirby making friend with normal Dreamland citizens to fight global threats always resonated with me more than our hero being chummy strictly with the elites of Dreamland society which has been the case since Kumazaki has taken lead of the franchise. Also I hope the vignettes at the beginning or end of stage returns in future Kirby projects. I surprised you did not bring up the Mass Attack ending with his pondering of the place of light and darkness in the universe. Mass Attack has to be cannon because it references Kirby Squeak Squad and is clearly positioned as a direct sequel to that game. Sorry for the overly long post and enjoy your weekend and beyond.

@@sparkxii. You read all of that?! Kudos!! and Shimomura Kirby crew is #1!!! Let's hope we see Rick, Coo, Kine, Chu-Chu, Nago, Pitch and Gooey again as more than references in a future Kirby Title.

you forgot to mention how in some games its implied that they talk... like for example in the start of forgotten land when elfilin is introduced...

Wrong, elfilin specifically has quirk of "reading facial expressions" he later does this with clawroline who is verbatim said to be incapable of speaking.

Kirby does speak at least once in a game (not sure about any other times cause I don’t have a 3DS to play any of the games on their). In Kirby’s Epic Yarn, while you don’t directly hear Kirby speaking, the Narrator does on many occasions state him to have spoken, and true, full sentences at that. EDIT: I might actually be wrong, I’m not quite sure, but after I saw a different comment, I’m second guessing myself.

Even in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, it’s implied that Kirby speaks to Elfilin, agreeing to help and telling him that his name is Kirby.
