Depression in college! I’m right there with you lol🖤. Thank you so much for these videos! I’m a current college student who wants to teach high school, everyone keeps telling me how crazy I am! I want to be that person that I needed while I was growing up but to my students! Thanks for helping me get through these times where I doubt myself.
Nav Singh oh my gosh I think high school would be so much fun! The outside voices you hear is only because they don’t want you to have a hard time, but every job can be hard in different ways 🙈
I'm actually starting school in January and I'm majoring in liberal arts teacher prep and watching your videos are definitely making an impact on me. I love your bubbly personality and I love these videos
summer camps were my first time working with large groups of kids. after handling 60+ kids at once...I was good. and omg the attitude from middle school and high school isn't for me
God is great for helping me find your videos!!! I have been dealing with a roller coaster of emotions and thinking if teaching is the right route for me due to my financial struggles right now. I am on my last semester of school before receving my B.A in Liberal Studies and I am constantly at ease with how I am going to pay for the credential program and the potential 3 months without work. Life is tough when paying for school and everything else yourself. I am happy to hear that I am not alone in this process and that you can give us your personal experience. I am currently seeking a second job in order to start saving more for my teaching credentials. Although I FREAKEN LOVE KIDS and the impact I have made in their lives for over seven years of working in the same elementary school as a afterschool program site coordinator, my financial situations can get discouraging with reaching my dreams in becoming a teacher. Thank you for your videos and thank the Lord for giving me more HOPE through your videos. I am, however, very interresting in hearing more about your experience and journey in grad school. That is something I do want to go into and did not know you can do at the same time while doing your credentials. Please elaborate! :) Thank You!
Hi Jenny, I'm so glad you're encouraged through all of this! Trust me girl, I also had to work multiple jobs while trying to afford going college! I FEEL YOU. You can do a combined Master's and Teaching Credential program and finish in 2 years, or if you do one after another it'll be like 2.5-3 years :) depending on if you want to do full-time or part time. Let me know if you need any help!
Maya Lee Awesome, thank you. I have been really focused on this last semester that I haven't put in time to think about grad school. Thank you. Already subscribed and excited to hear more about your experiences and stories. P.S your story about eviction and with your parents struggling to make ends meet really triggered the waterworks due to having gone through the same thing after highschool. It is true, God will always help you in time of need. My family has been great now thanks to Him. 🙏 Thank you for talking about your story.
I dont live in america, so everything you talk about school wise doesnt make much sense to me bc aus is different,, but im in my last year of university to become a qualified primary teacher (once i pass my lantite) and watching you on here has made me so confident that i can do this. That i really can. You inspire me to become a better teacher every day,, and i thankyou 💞
Blessings to you for becoming a teacher for the younger kids! That's a calling! I'm a high school teacher and yes, the attitudes are why some teachers avoid HS teaching altogether, however, where God leads He also provides... and He's provided me with much patience for that age group. Whew! Thank you for sharing! God Bless! And go EAGLES! #BIOLA. Wait... they are the Eagles right?
I would love to see more videos like this! I want to be a K teacher too and I hope I get into the school I want to get into! *crosses fingers What do you like most about teaching?
Deborah Huh yay I’m glad you enjoyed these questionnaires! Hmm I think when I’m reminded that the kids see that I’m human too, and that we’re all going through this life together. That I get to help water some of the positive seeds that have been planted in their minds :)
Hi! I am a psychology major graduating May 2020 in LA! I am very much considering working in the education field as an elementary teacher and am starting to look into graduate education programs. Since I just made this transition, would you recommend apply to graduate programs that have a teaching credential included or just go for the teaching credential? :)
OMG, thank you so much for this video. Instantly subscribed! I'm an Asian too, when I told my parents that I want to be a multi-subjects bilingual teacher in LA, they freaked out. My parents are worried that I would struggle with 40-50k a year in LA since it cost a lot to live there. To be honest, I am worried too, the financial part really got me from time to time. I have always lived a comfortable life because my parents supported me financially, but I do not want to rely on them forever. So Maya, I really want to consult you about it, and it would really influence my decision. I am single, and I want to be able to rent a studio/ one bedroom in a safe neighborhood in LA, I also like to eat in restaurants at least once a week. Do you think it is possible for a teacher? Could you please just give me a breif idea on what kind of living standard a teacher can afford in LA? Thank you so much!!
Hi! I guess it would depend on a lot of different things...when it comes to budgeting, I believe you should only spend about 30% of your salary on rent, so for me it's not possible for me to live on my own right now. I also have student loans, and always put 20% - 25% of my salary into my savings because having and keeping a large savings is essential for me and my family. Usually teacher's pay rate goes up significantly every 5 years, so if you're willing to live within your means for a while, I would say it'll all be okay :)
@@mayaleex3 Maya, thank you so much for answering my question! I guess life would be a lot better after 5 years of teaching. Knowing it will get better is really comforting. Thank you so much for this information, you are the sweetest person in the world. BTW, which church do you attend? Do a lot of Asians go there? Any recommendations on the church in LA? I will move to LA in a few months if I am admitted to the credential program I applied. I am thinking of joining a community by finding a good church to go regularly. Otherwise, I would be so lonely by myself in LA, and probably would mentally breakdown since the teaching credential program is so stressful.
Did you go to UCR for your credential?! I went to cal baptist for Liberal Studies and I’m trying to figure out the best grad program!!! Thanks for all your content 💛💛💛
I needed this video. So freaking bad. I want to be a principal not just a teacher and I’m wondering if you know what I would need to major in grad school?
Joyce Wu awww! You would need to get an MaEd (Masters in Education) focusing on administration, curriculum, or something of that sort :) most MaEd programs offer specifics for you to focus on but all are helpful for being a principal
Maya Lee I’m planning to go for a bachelors in elementary education and if I do decide to be a principal in middle school or high school is there a specific certification I would need? also, someone told me I needed to be a guidance counselor and librarian before being a principal. I don’t know how true that is because I was told by someone else that you just needed to be a teacher? How many years of teaching would I need before I can go for a principal? I apologize for asking so many questions. Thank you for helping me out! Have a nice day!
Love your channel. I majored in criminal justice and I’ve been applying to sub jobs and now I’m thinking of going back to school to get my masters in education. What do you think? I also work full time and I will start subbing on my days off from work.
Some states do offer a major in education, but this is not the case in California. There is an increasing need for teachers in special education and mathematics. Rememeber that to do some volunteer work in school districts, fingerprint clearance may be required. Here is somethkng for you, Maya. Most teachers remember their kindergarten teacher. Take care and enjoy your week.
I love the way you thing about the relationship you have with Jesus... God bless you! Teaching is the most amazing thing can happen to you if it is the path to follow according to God´s purpose. I just opened my own school in Guatemala and it is a tremendous challenge when it comes to planification and I think your channel and your experiences will help me a lot. Thank you so much for your video!
I spent a month in Guatemala on a mission trip 10 years ago and absolutely fell in love with it there. Praying for God to give you everything you need in order for your school to reach the community you are in.
Thank you so much Ashley! Trying to give people more opportunities! God bless you for your good heart And feelings about my country! Ir you come here again let me know 😊
Mildred Tellez thank you so much for your kind words & support ❤️😘 that’s so amazing! I’m sure there’s SO much that goes into opening a school. All the best 👌 let me know if I can help you in any way
I was going towards becoming a teacher with liberal studies as my major, but i recently switched to Child Development because it was way too many units😭 it would take me about 5.5 years for my bachelors and credentials. Also, way too many history and science classes required, in which i personally struggle the most. I feel like CD was a better fit since you learn about the children behavior and psychology. Do you know if i can teach with a child development major? A friend told me its mostly preschool and kindergarten even but how how elementary over all with a teaching credentials?
You definitely can! You can choose to get a multiple subject credential in order to teach elementary school. Child development can still help you better understand why kids are the way they are ;)
I love your videos! You bring so much positivity. I love your how your so honest and raw. It’s so helpful! Your a great guide, you make me feel like I’m capable. Also, I’m so happy to see you integrate God!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this video! People tell me all the time not to get into teaching because of the pay but I truly believe that’s where God wants me. I can’t wait! Your videos are awesome and are really getting me ready to go to college for this career💗
I can relate to your stories and epxeriences so much right now!! I am also working various part time jobs right now while going to college but know it will be worth it at the end! Sorry I haven't taken the time to comment on your last couple of videos😭 Hope all is going well with you!
Reina Miyamoto Hi lovey!! Awww thank you for always supporting me nonetheless. College is such a busy time! I hope this was helpful in some way. Stay warm in Seattle ❤️
Thank you soooo much for making all the videos you make! I've been subscribing to your channel for a while and I want to be a teacher. I am currently in high school and find your videos so inspiring. You are someone I strive to be like.
Jess Lewis thank you Jess! You are so sweet! I’m glad my videos can be helpful in some way as you think about becoming a teacher. Let me know if you need anything :)
I've been thinking about majoring in teaching but I was wondering if theirs a life management teaching major ? and if there is if it would be possible to be a cross country coach on the side ?
your makeup looks fab! also, great video (: I just graduated in December 2018 with my bachelor's in Education. Your videos were so motivating with my journey, so thank you so much!
Yay! You are SO close to 10k-sending positive vibes, friend!! ❤️❤️ I hope I can hit that goal by the end of this year! Hehe wishful thinking. 🙈I loved learning more about you through this video and your precious little stinker lounging on the couch-my furbabies do that too! Hugs! 💜💜💜
Im so soo happy to have stumbled upon this video after watching someone else's!! I feel EXACTLY the same about everything you said, I love little kids but 4th and 5th grade doesnt sound too bad either because I'm open to talking to them! Also, I love your confidence in God! Thats where I'm at too, I feel like after so many years of indecisiveness, I finally feel confident that God wants me to be in this field (for now at least)! I was trying to look for advice on childhood education that would help more as a Christian and its hard to find something that specific here lol BUT GOD! This made me more excited, I've delayed school unintentionally but God used these 2 years to form me to draw near to Him first :) Thank you for this video, never ever stop being what God has called you to be
My daughter is a Japanese Major and soon will be transferring to a University. She wants to be a teacher. What is a good college for transferring, a Masters and Teaching Credential? I grew up in Riverside. Yeah UC. I just subscribed to your channel.
Hi maya kindly guide me.I have done my masters in zoology and have 13 years of teaching experience in another country as i moved in california five months ago.I want to be a teacher in elementary shool.what should i do? Waiting for your reply
Ah great video! I live in New York and am anticipating going to grad school for education. What tests did you have to take to become certified? Can you do a video comparing teaching requirements/tests in CA and NY? I heard if you're licensed in NY you can also teach in CA without going through the hassle of doing a license in CA.
if i want to become a history teacher for high school/middle school students, what should i major/minor in college? could i do a double major/should i?
I'm going to cry, I'm 20 and on my 3rd year in community college. it's taking me a while to get out because deep down i want to be a teacher more than anything but everyone around me frowns upon it so i havent been taking classes towards a specific major and not having anyone's support unmotivated me to do well in school, especially because i didnt know what my gameplan would be if i transferred to university. but i found your channel and seeing that you struggled with depression and have come out on top to teach just like your heart wanted all along has given me a bit of hope and a push to get a grip on my own life and do what i please because allowing my loved ones to make my life decisions for me is just hurting me almost beyond repair!! thank you for being you and sharing your stories and advice :-)))
my sister wants to become a teacher :) (my parents are supportive but are still trying to convince her to go to law school oop) she's still a senior in high school so i think she still has time... im a junior in college applying for medical school in the summer but im still not sure...
this is interesting bc im actually a semester short from student teaching and the edtpa but i plan on dropping childhood education after this semester is over. everyone tells me i have the personality to be a teacher, but through my experience and work i’ve just finally accepted that working as a childhood teacher makes me want to run away and hide. i admire people who are passionate about education, because lord knows we need people who actually care in this field. i care as well, but my motivation in life is elsewhere, and i think now is my time to change while i’m still fairly young.
Jennifer Balbuena hi love! Awww, I think it’s amazing you’ve been able to self reflect and realize maybe going in a different direction would be more beneficial to you. That’s huge, especially when we’re young, to choose change over comfort. You’ve got this 👌
Maya Lee I wish you are my teacher because you are so sweet, nice, and pretty also you had a great teaching way. Love you hopefully one day you are my teacher. But I think you are at the drifferent state :(
