Yup - this would be great: perfect crossover of two funky areas of your world! E.g. favourite / most hated costumes ever and why; examples of circus-specific sewing tricks (i.e. the things you mention here, but with some visuals of what they look like in practice); who else makes circus outfits? (are there professional companies that do this, or do venues have their own costumers, or do the majority of your colleagues make their own?); have circus colleagues asked you to make costumes for them?; have you ever considered this as an additional income generator (if not, why not?); how much do performers get to choose their own costumes vs. how much is pre-determined by the requirements of an overall 'look' of a production? etc. Idle curiosity on my part, but super interesting! ❤

Many years ago when I worked as the sewing room supervisor for a major lingerie manufacturer, I would sometimes complain about having to rip something out to redo it. One of our pattern makers would always remind me "As ye sew, so shall ye rip!" It was a lighthearted reminder that mistakes happen and the world won't end.

Same for me. Started sewing as about 12 because I wanted to have more clothes, and it really did cost less to sew. Fast fashion broke me about two years ago, hated all the clothes that didn't come from the Thrift store. So, at 69, I've picked it back up, and, Shannon has been a major inspiration. And, FINALLY, my clothes actually fit.

Have you thought about “historical” circus clothing? In terms of something you could perhaps actually use but would also have a vintage/historical vibe?
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
I would definitely like to make some historical circus clothing, and it's on the list for sure, but it's a bit lower on the list because unfortunately I would never actually use it, as it's quite impractical for our actual performances 😢 Have started looking into it and examining extant examples where I can find them though!
@mollyn03
@mollyn03 Год назад
It always impresses me so much that you manage a job as a professional free-lance performer on top of your RU-vid content. Those are two really hustle-heavy jobs. Also, as someone who loves sewing but is chronically ill and also on a very tight budget, I always appreciate how mindful of expense you are and also that you make things that can be easily worn day-to-day. This kind of practical yet historically themed sewing is such and inspiration to me and it's also a relief. I love watching people sew full 19th cent ball gowns, but there is no way I can afford either the money or the effort it would take to make something that involved, especially as I would never wear it. Because of this, if the only content I see is like that it can feel isolating and very frustrating. So, I hugely appreciate the makers who focus on the potentially less flashy but more practical projects. I not only enjoy your content, but videos like yours also help me to feel OK watching the big-budget makers as well because I no longer feel excluded, just that I am choosing to focus my energy on other equally valuable things. (Also, I would love to see a Part 2, fyi :-) )
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Why thank you, I'm glad that you feel like you can connect with my content in a different way than with other creators, and that it helps you to enjoy the fancier content! (I admit, part of me was like, "dang, well I want to be a big budget maker too" but also, let's be honest, while I could technically afford the fancier stuff, I probably wouldn't feel good using it for a frivolous costume😭😭) I would love to occasionally do bigger, fancier projects --maybe not entire ball gowns, but you know, something more than a blouse and vest-- but they'll most likely be very few and far-between the more practical makes
@mollyn03
@mollyn03 Год назад
@@ShannonMakes Oh, for sure. I remember you saying you were looking into Victorian tailoring technique and that would definitely require significantly more than a $20 budget (and I'm very keen to see where that goes, it sounds like fun). But seeing fun makes that use only a couple of meters of affordable fabric is also really nice - and so much of your content is like this so far. So, thank you!

Shannon, the thing you bring to the RU-vid experience that NO other sewist has, is your circus work. I get being anxious about spending time on a product that doesn't make views/money, but it feels like it would be smart to take advantage of the thing that makes you utterly unique among RU-vid sewists. You really do bring something great to the table, so capitalize on that, both economically and creatively.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
Makes sense, and it does seem like it'd make me stand out, but at the same time, if no one comes for the circus content, it's still a time sink (I say, having had friends start circus YT channels only to see them bomb). There's surely a way to integrate it, but needs to be well thought out, I feel!

I think it is fascinating to se bits of life from other peoples perspective. The crafting content is *chef's kiss* and it is what made me click on that first video, but what you chose to share from your day to day life is very ~exotic~ 😄to an inveterate homebody like myself. I also started sewing because of want of a garment, much later in life but still. I was taught the very basics at school, but did not do anything else until I really wanted a nice skirt that actually fit me. And your sewing learning seems exactly like mine to be honest, the internet is a sewing library rigth at our fingertips! On another note ..two full time jobs seems like a recipe for burnout in the long run. Take it from someone that is still working on getting over burnout 5 YEARS after the initial crash. It is really not worth it, at all. The medical community know very little about how to fix the damage caused by chronic stress, the approach is 'get plenty of rest and pray that your brain and body is capable of reparing themselves'. I crashed pretty damned badly for little to no real gain, and now I can't really help but want to warn others about how serious effects burnout migth actually have. It is brain damage. If you are lucky, your brain heals to full fuctionality. If you are unlucky your brain has taken permanent damage. Avoid at all(most) costs.

I don't think it's so good to show too much of one's life online, for mental health reasons if anything, and although I'm interested in a circus artist's and sewist's life per se, I'm mostly here for the nerdy sewing recycled fabrics content with honest commentary and cosy editing. Loving your honesty about mistakes ! They are PART OF SUCCESS, not the opposite of it ! More people need to hear this ! I'm a performing artist too (musician) and yes, it's really not about not messing up. I know I WILL mess up, no matter how much I prepare beforehand. It's all about how one deals with the mistake, how one handles the mess ^^ 32:41 Damnnn I feel that one ^^ "My life is chaos and everytime I [...] try to plan out a content calendar is goes to crap." I google everything and watch RU-vid tutorials ALL THE TIME. It's how I learn nearly everything craft-wise. I am a much more accomplished knitter than sewist, and even with a great deal of experience, I STILL google and watch videos about complex knitting techniques that I don't use on a regular basis. I found you through looking for "how to do" something sew-y! (I found your Hobbit Housecoat and OMG I totally want to make one..... ) I LOVE that you include mistakes. I'm all about learning from my own mistakes; in fact, being able to stay calm and patient and work THROUGH a mistake is a part of the reason I love craft - it is an excellent skill to cultivate - so it's very much about the PROCESS for me, although I love wearing/using my finished creations. BTW, I was an English major too!

Please make a part two! This was really awesome to listen too while working on a project. I have two questions to ask for you to perhaps ask your friends and colleagues. First, would you mind asking them to also share their stories about how they also got into the various acts and circus stuff? And second, is there like an age or perhaps some other factors that start to lessen your ability to continue working as an acrobatic/athletic performer that might be different than say other athletes or performers? I also was wondering if you could share more about your “make journal” you mentioned and maybe show some of it and what exactly it all entails? It was just really intriguing when you mentioned it in one of your other videos where you made the new vest using the tightest and smallest budget possible? It just sounds like a really cool idea, and being a maker myself I feel like I might want to try something similar because it seems like it would be really cool to document all the various different things I make or do. But I am curious about what all you include in such an item. And if you want to make a second video like this I would happily watch it, I always find it interesting and really awesome to kind of get to know the person behind the lense beyond the bit they share while making or doing whatever they are doing in the video at that moment. Thanks for sharing so much!

I'm still catching up with your older videos. I really like all the different things you do. I have been wondering about the circus side of your activities. It seems like you have boundless energy and I am impressed with how you throw yourself into every project. Your Corgi is a cutie. Your thrifty nature falls right in with mine. I was raised on a farm and you had to watch every expenditure plus be very observant of your animals and crops. So I look forward to all your adventures.

I think the fact that you have so many varied interests and so many activities that you do in a day shows. Since you've described that you do have quite a wildly varying day every day it kind of explains why your videos are varied. I like the fact that one will be about circus and one will be about the dog and one will be about arranging a space and one will be about sewing. As varied as your life is, so are your youtube offerings. I like them all, I like them mixed, I like them when they're only about one thing. Keep on doing what you're doing and keep us guessing. It never occurred to me that this show was about sewing only after "meeting" you.

Love this deep dive! Idea: you could integrate some of your physical circus training into sewing project videos - i.e. for helping to segway from one part of the project to another.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
I'm not sure if that'd be interesting or jarring to the viewer, but you're the second person to mention it, so I'll marinate on the idea for sure!

@@ShannonMakes You said montages are more than a bit complex to create - maybe you could create some personal "stock" montages of different types of workouts you do - and potential corgi activities - and then insert them into videos as a bridge from one thing to another with potential to reuse entire or partial segments.

When making adjustments to patterns it helps if you have a mind that sees in shapes. It’s really geometry.
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes Год назад
True, that definitely helps, but there are so many good YT tutorials out there that I honestly believe that even if you're garbage at geometry, you can work it out. It just might take a few tutorials to find the one that speaks to you

It always happens, answering questions elicits more questions. Mine is, are there people who freelance at sewing costumes for circus performers and if so, is that something which you might enjoy doing when you are no longer performing yourself? It seems like you have amassed a great deal of specialized knowledge.

I was thinking about your not having taken any sewing classes for your English major. I never learned any sewing at school which was highly unusual in my age group. Home ec was a required class that I thought was a complete waste of my time as I already planned, shopped and cooked for my fairly large family since I was 11 or 12. I started sewing in 4H at age 12. 4H sewing is competitive! But after not sewing for 40 years I forgot how to sew!! I got my mom’s old sewing machine and started sewing costumes! I relearned all about sewing on RU-vid! I love RU-vid for learn how to do things! Finally I did take a free class at my community college. I still think I should take a free intermediate sewing class but life has me busy right now (pattern making and sewing!). My major in college was Modern Dance with a double minor in Literature and psychology. I was in a couple of companies for 2 years after college. Then I figured out my career!
