I think a good topic would be temperature - what are the pro’s and cons of keeping reef tanks at higher and lower temperatures 👌🏻
@tranquilwaters917
@tranquilwaters917 2 года назад
Mark and Jake, Tropic Marin DOES make a powdered form of "All-for-Reef." I run it on all my tanks and have seen the results before using then turning it off only doing weekly water changes, then back to "all-for-reef" BIG Difference using it. I will say in the dosing container there is a brown film that needs to be stirred daily. Mark is spot on it takes time to dial-in and then be willing to adjust on a monthly basis as your testing dictates.

The thing I especially love about books, is that they emphasize the basic husbandry. That information doesn't tend to change radically over the years. In the online age, the building blocks of husbandry get passed over and new reefers jump right into products. The books teach the diligent work that forms the foundation for a successful hobbyist.

Jake: professionals use proper identification. Hobbyist are what half-ass it. I work in agriculture. Every producer, farmer, researcher, educator, government regulator, and journalists uses proper identification. Every one of them. It doesn't matter if it's a bacteria, a plant, an animal, an insect... every one of them. Science identifies them by nomenclature for a reason. If not, it is utter confusion. And that has been proven time and time again through decades of headaches. You don't think every plant out there has 15 different common names? They do. That is the very problem which had to be overcome. Other fields of agriculture had to become frustrated and confused, not able to identify what the other person was talking about ( becase a common name had been used for multiple different species). That is what prompts proper identification: Frustration and confusion. And have no doubt, coral farmers will get to that same point. It's just, we've been growing plants for 20 thousan years. We've been trying to describe them scientifically for over 200 years. And naturalist had been trying to understand them for centuries prior to that. In contrast: We've only been able to keep and cultivate coral for less than half a century. This field of aquaculture is in its infancy. Give it time. But have no doubt, those of us who know better look at buzz-word coral names as not only unprofessional, but as pure stupidity as it ultimately creates confusion. When I see a coral vendor or video creator who is unable to name the species of coral: I immediately questioned how poorly they pursue every other aspect of their job. They are either a professional, or they're not. And using the proper vocabulary is part of professional pursuit.

Taxonomy is extremely important. That's the bottom line. I am a mosquito taxonomist, everything taxonomically when it comes to Culicidae. You have to speak the same language in a profession or hobby when it comes to disease or for that matter successes. When advance hobbyists and professionals are discussing problems or success in the marine trade we need to be on the "same page" if one disregards the taxonomy then we could be talking about the same thing and not have a clue or just the opposite discussing two different organisms which in reality are the same. Varieties, morphs, subspecies, etc. are important to understanding the bionomics of these organisms which in turn can lead to true longterm success and spectacular reef tanks.

I had two ATS units from Inland that I wish I still had. A 36” hob and a shuttle. I really liked the shuttle and the surge of water it pushed across the tank. I love looking at 1980-90 display tanks. Looking at my own tank pics, I like my systems from that era better than the ones I currently run. I use AccuraSea salt and like the clarity and consistency from each mix. Really enjoy these discussions and appreciate your time putting it together.

Regards all for reef, I've been using it for a few years now and have had no bad experience. Even with a massive overdose (wife filled ATO with pre mixed all for reef instead of RODI water and caused about 3 years worth of dosing in the space of a week) did few small water changes and let alk reduce slowly overtime, was reading 20 I e. Max on Hannah checker for several days in a row even with water changes and despite few corals being pissed off, not one died. One thing I've noticed is get a slight yellow crud left at the bottom whether I've bought the liquid or powder version. According to tropic marin it's just some precipitant of some of the elements (from memory iron was mentioned as a likely culprit) and would be safe to dose. However, I tend to avoid dosing it just because it looks a bit ugly and now mix up smaller batches at a time to try and avoid losing elements to precipitation.

Jake, I was thinking the same thing about LED "screens" being the future of reef lighting the other day. Just a complete sheet of diffuse light. The lighting we have now, although adequate, is going to look ancient in a few more years.

Vicious and vapid anti-intellectualism and the distrust or mockery of expertise are some of the only real, universal, american cultural constants. Sorry to hear the internet's magnification, glorification, and sheer ease of access to/of them is causing so much grief for you two. I actually loved the coral ID threads you were putting up.

Haters gotta hate Jake! I can only speak for myself but I admire and respect your hard line stance of proper names and identification! I have a feeling that 95% of other people in the hobby do to. The problem is that 5% likes to bitch, a lot and loud. Don’t change a thing.

I have definitely had that dream! Not about a neglected fish tank but about my ferrets that I used to own. I loved them so much & they were very spoiled in real life but every so often, I dream that they’re suddenly alive again and I had no idea & haven’t taken care of them in a long time. It’s a horrible, guilty feeling but it made me feel better to hear someone else say that they also have that dream!

The future of the testing machines seems Ron be the one with foils. Anyway, it depends hardly and maybe only on the industrial use of this kind of testing. The reefing hobby is just to small to lead this kind of products. I do have the iond and KHD from GHL and it is much cheaper to run these days. I guess we will have the mechanical KH Monitors at least for the next ten years. Anyway. It is like the electric cars. The mainstream was thinking they won’t make the way in the automobile industry. But I drive from time to time electric cars and love the reduction of the mechanical components and additives.

A think a lot of the things you are complaining about are maybe caused by the fact that a hell of a lot of new reefers are more into the gear than the animals. They've probably had lots of gadget central hobbies over the years and underestimate what keeping a reef is really about

I have a question. Based on your recommendation Jake I got a class company to make a lid for my 10 gallon nano that sits on top of the mesh on the factory lid. All that evaporation makes a layer of water droplets on the glass. Won’t that affect the amount of light that passes through? Any way to avoid this?

Saying a question has been answered a thousand times isn't fair. First finding the answer your looking for can be very difficult on forums, especially if the answer is buried in a 100 page thread. 2nd is the answer that was given still valid? Third that answer may not apply to the same circumstances as you have. Isn't the whole point of the forum to have discussions and ask for advice. Just because the answer is obvious to you doesn't mean it is to someone else, especially someone new who may not know how to filter out the bad info. Now I am not saying that someone should just up and ask a question without looking, but if you have looked and can't find what your looking for what's wrong with asking. Thanks also for pointing out the smell of the filter rolls. This seems to be ignored for all filter roller manufacturers except the Klir filter rollers. Those rolls are contained and there is a carbon filter on the vent. I hope other manufacturers do things to address this.
