ANSYS v18.1 Workbench Tutorial video on how to use the topology optimization feature in order to reduce the total mass of a mechanical metal bracket.
DOWNLOAD:
SpaceClaim v18.1 Final Geometry File: cutt.ly/DrDaly...
Mirror Link: goo.gl/Nj57Ns
Long Description:
We will begin by opening ANSYS v18.1 Workbench interface. Check the engineering data to ensure the proper material is selected (in our case it will be the default material). Open up SpaceClaim to create our geometry (note, you can always right click on the geometry cell and click to open in DesignModeler instead if you are more comfortable using it). Once in SpaceClaim, we will use the line tool and pull tool to create our metal bracket. Once created, we exit SpaceClaim and head into Mechanical to set up our loads and boundary conditions. Create a mesh using the sizing "Proximity and Curvature" to better capture the round corner details. Add two cylindrical supports, choose to make the tangential component free. Add one bearing load with 50KN in the X-dir and 100KN in the Z-dir. Add Equivalent Stress results and Solve to view the stress results.
Exit Mechanical and go back to the project schematic window. Drag Topology Optimization onto cell 7 "Results" of the first analysis. This will link the static structural analysis to the topology optimization analysis. Leave most of the settings default. Change the Response Constraint to retain 60% of the mass. Solve the system.
Exit out of Mechanical and right click on cell 7 Results on the topology optimization analysis and click on "Transfer to Design Validation System" in order to export the STL file generated into a new static structural analysis automatically. Open up SpaceClaim in the new analysis to view the STL import results. Create a new sketch plane and copy the edges of the STL file to a new sketch. Under the Repair tab, use the option Fit Curves to simplify the rough curve geometry from the import. Choose to Correct Tangency and keep the default distance 0.1mm. Simpify the rest of the geometry as needed using the Trim Away tool and Create Corner tool. Should you want to reduce the amount of faces for mesh generation, use the Merge Faces tool under the repair tab to merge selected faces into one face. In order to not export all product structure files into the analysis, we must right click on the products in the structure tree and choose "Suppress for Physics" in order to remove these items from the analysis. Keep only the Solid file.
Exit SpaceClaim and open Mechanical by double clicking on the Model cell. Say yes when prompted to read upstream data. Regenerate mesh and reapply boundary conditions and loads. Finally solve the model to view the final results.

You are literally a king. I'm sick and tired of these ansys videos recorded in 360p with shitty royalty free music playing and no audio commentary. You made this very straight forward.

Dr. DalyO, I really appreciate the time that you have spent to put these ANSYS tutorials together. They are by far the most informative, concise, and interesting modeling/FEA videos that I have seen. Most videos are either technical or interesting, but not both - you have an excellent method of presenting. Thank you! I see that most of your videos are from 5 and 6 years ago. I am really looking forward to you releasing more tutorials based on ANSYS 2020. Please keep the great work coming!

Hi DrDalyo, thanks for the awesome tutorial. However, i did face a problem while transferring the optimized results to a new static, structural system. When i update the geometry in block 'c' it gives me this error "Update failed for Geometry component in Model,static, structural . Update of the geometry component in Model, static, structural did not mark the component as updated due to a change made to the Results component during the update". This may be a noob error on my part but I would really appreciate any comments from you on this.

I don't think the validation showed that this topology optimization is not good, am I right?. There was 83MPa before and there is 137 after. Can you somehow make an if condition, that says to move as much weight as possible, but to keep the stress at max +5% (87MPa in this case)? I think cutting down strictly 60% of the weight is not very practical. Anyway for learning and education it is enough. I appreciate the video description, really good job. Wish you a future success with this channel.
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 7 лет назад
+Lukáš Kratochvila you could also add a maximum stress condition. Actually the first time I ran the model the max stress stayed the same while cutting 60%. I think during recording, i cleaned up the model differently and the stress increased. But as you can see its very local in the bolt hole. Test it out for yourself and see. Thanks for the comment!

sir plz help thiz kind of error comes in ansys 14 You have a bearing load that has an axial component. This is not allowed. If an axial component is desired, create a separate force load in order to apply the axial component. One or more bodies may be underconstrained and experiencing rigid body motion. Weak springs have been added to attain a solution. Refer to Troubleshooting in the Help System for more details.

Hello, I am a mechanical engineer, and I wanted to thank you for your RU-vid channel which is an anthology of digital simulation. I am contacting you because I have a question regarding a feature of Ansys Workench, more specifically, the static calculation. In particular, I would like to know if it is possible to define a load (force or pressure) which depends on both x and y, a function with several spatial variables. And if you've ever made a video about it, I'd be interested in viewing it. Regards

I have given transfer to Design validation(geometry) after Structural optimization in ANSYS 2022R2 student version What happens is my geometry which is only 90mm in Structural optimization module is showing as 90m in Spaceclaim. I'm trying to learn the software for the first time, but videos of older version like 17 or lower have quite a different user interface which makes it difficult to follow when using version 18.

I am abit confused with the boundary conditions you set at 4:24. Why is there a msg telling you that there is rigid body movement? There is something else which just looks very wrong in the model, take a look at the stresses in the area in which the bolt connections are located. You have tensile stresses there, a bolt cannot pull on the body. I am not very familiar with Ansys but with many other FEM tools so I can only guess what happens here. Ansys automatically sets an independent master node in the center of the bolt and now connects ALL nodes on the cylindrical surface to that one master node. To model this correctly, one has to only connect 180° to the master nodes according to the force direction. I am certain that this structure would completely fail since you can see that there are almost no stresses on the outer parts of the bolt connection. This model would correspond to a glued/welded connection.
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 7 лет назад
Hi! Thanks for your question. Regarding the first point on BC, the message is being displayed because the geometry deforms slightly in the Y direction (out of plane) and there are no BCs to prevent this movement. If you would like the message to dissapear, you could easily insert a Frictionless Support on the large surface of the model to constrain it in the Y direction. Regarding your second question, there is nothing wrong with the model. You have to keep in mind that a bearing load is a simplification and if you want something more accurate you would need to model the bolt itself and apply contact. I think actually you dont understand the loading condition presented. Its a bit hard to explain, but have a look at the image here: apolloedgeblog.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/slide24.png In this case you would have tensile stresses on the bracket. Ansys does not set master nodes at the center of the bolt, and you do not need to connect 180deg. I suggest reading the help information regarding Bearing Loads. When selecting the full interior surface of the hole, the load will be distributed on the compressive side. The structure would not fail because the stresses remain below the yield stress of steel (80MPa < 250MPa).
@CurrencyPrime
@CurrencyPrime 7 лет назад
Hello again, thank you for the first answer, that makes sense but I still have a problem with the second part. The picture actually shows why your boundary conditions are not correct. Take a look at this model: imgur.com/PY8ywD5 espeically the top left region. The stresses are way higher on the left side of the bolt, which is what you would expect from such a construction. In your model the stresses are 0 in that region. If you look at the picture you linked, the top bar is getting pulled to the left. Where would it fail? Ofc it would fail on the right side of the bolt while it should be able to displace freely on the left part which is not a given condition in your model due to the fixed constraint all around the bolt area.
@matinkarimov2397
@matinkarimov2397 Год назад
@@CurrencyPrime That is a really good point to mention. Stresses should be way more higher on the left side of the fixed points, since it is pulled to the right. But, in the model we do have a opposite... I think boundary conditions do not reflect the real case.
