Thanks. Nice to have a non-monetized and straight forward video

I think I’ve watched close to 100 videos on cameras and Antarctica. This is THE most straightforward and useful video I have viewed. Especially about the difficulty of using differing tethering devices and polar gear at the same time. Looks like I’m pulling out the old black rapid gear again, even though I love the Peak design stuff.

This is very helpful, thank you! We will be in Antarctica in February 2024 and are already thinking what to take. The greatest value is in discussing what to leave behind. I would not have taken a tripod, but I would have taken a camera backpack (Shimoda Action X30) which is great for mountain hiking with camera gear. But now I see it's hard to wear a backpack with the bulky Antarctic parka and PFD. I've also splashed a camera with sea water on a Zodiak ride, so taking a dry bag seems a great solution to this problem; and the camera is accessible once the caffeine-charged Zodiak driver slows down. I have had a camera fail on an epic trip to Iceland, so I am with you on that issue. We also chose cameras with dual card slots and use both for identical RAW files in case a card fails. Finally, I think this video is a model for how a stills photographer can make good use of RU-vid. I feel inspired to try. Thanks again for posting this.

My biggest problem with travelling by air is weight. I'd love to take both my Z6ii and D750, but with lenses, batteries and other stuff, my backpack quickly becomes overweight.

Thank you so much for posting very useful information. I am going to Antarctica in Feb 2024 and have been thinking about how to optimize my gear. I don’t want to bring things that end up not getting used. I like the double camera strap idea that goes under the life vest you have to wear. I also like that I don’t have to worry as much about rain covers for cameras. I will probably bring zip lock bags and make a cover on the fly if needed. What are your thoughts about wearing sunglasses vs ski goggles. That is the current debate in my brain, any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Sun glasses are fine. You really don't need the goggles. A lot of the time it was overcast and I didn't wear anything to cover my eyes.

Good advice! Will be going to Antarctica this January. Sounds like there are some pretty strict rules!

I'm headed put on the Octantis on the 30th, just wondering, did you ever use the backpack on the Zodiac at all or just the harness? And did you ever use the Peak Design attachments?

Thanks, we’ll be on the Polaris in February. Could you please give your impression of your 28-300 for travel? Things like sharpness, keeper rate, weather sealing, build quality.

The 28-300 is a nice lens and if I had to only use one lens on a vacation, that would be the one I would use. It is not as sharp as a prime or a 24-70 f2.8 but I like the flexibility the zoom gives me. It seems to be well built but the only weather exposure I have experienced was in light snow so I can't say how it would hold up in heavy rain. Keeper rate was good but again, for landscape I am not as picky as I would be for wildlife.

Bret video. How big a dry bag did you purchase?

We got it through Viking cruises. It was big enough to fit 2 cameras with one having a towel wrapped around it. Don''t remember the exact dimensions
