Antarctica - Rounding Cape Horn

The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. And loved it.

Love this. Maybe I'm old but it's so wonderful just to hear the sound of the wind and the sea rather than some irrelevant soundtrack!

the limitations of the microphone, even with it being high-quality recording equipment, fail to capture the total deafening sound of ocean wind, but they definitely come pretty close.

Melville wrote a book called, “White Jacket “. Written in the 1840’s, about his tour of duty on an American man o war. They round the cape on their way home from their three year tour of duty. I found it fascinating as most of the book is about what went on aboard a war ship in the 1840’s. His description of rounding the cape is awesome.

I didn't actually see Cape Horn when I rounded Eastabout as part of a high latitude (north and south) circumnavigation in a Chatham 33', steel, pilothouse cutter. I passed just south of the Diego Ramriez Islands about 60 nm below the Horn.. The seas were so big, I decided to stay out in deep water and off the continental shelf, but a lot of good that did me; it was still very wild with thunder snow and hail.

That's a great video. It's so unusual to see a video of rounding the Horn in "appropriate" weather and that close to the Horn. Also very grateful that you have a natural soundtrack rather than music.

@@PurpleObscuration most small boat sailors are familiar with the sound of the water passing by the keel below them. It is easiest to hear when you're a bit forward (down below). The actual sound is identical to a large group of people conversing, like at a party. The "screaming" sound may be the gooseneck, a squeaky sheave or who knows what...but that's the way the thousands of souls who met their end in these waters tend to vocalize. The worse the weather, the more they love to ride along for a spell. Makes it easier to stay awake when you're on watch, too.

I've been down there on a rough day. Our destroyer pulled in and let us have liberty, 350 navy ship. It got rough, so rough that the destroyer abandoned us and told us to find a place to sleep and we'll get picked up when it's safe. I was on shore for 2 days. When they came and got us, it was probably still 15 foot swells. We rode back in the ships zodiac, in the swells, it was freaky and a lot of people threw up. I remember the swells were splashing a cliff and on to the highway that lay on top, must have been 100' up to that point.

@ushoys 5 лет назад
That's how I usually leave my winch handles too - ready to be used in the winches and not needing to grabbed from somewhere else, put in place in a hurry and likely dropped. Yes, they get in the way somewhat and ropes can get tangled on them, but overall it's better to leave them where they're used than shipping them inboard every time they're not. The folks on this boat know what they're doing.

It is relatively shallow in comparison to the oceans either side. Also it's narrow gap between Antartica and the tip of South America and with the predominant winds and currents forced down the west coast through a small space you get the fearsome conditions Cape Horn is notorious for.
