Anterior Tibial Artery Anatomy Animation : Origin, Course, Branches, Supply | USMLE Step 1 Review
The Anterior tibial artery is a key blood vessel in the lower leg that plays a vital role in supplying blood to the anterior compartment of the leg and dorsal foot.
The anterior tibial artery originates at the bifurcation of the popliteal artery in the popliteal fossa (the hollow at the back of the knee), typically at the level of the knee joint. From there, it passes anteriorly between the two heads of the tibialis posterior muscle and pierces the interosseous membrane to move to the anterior compartment of the leg.
In its course down the leg, the anterior tibial artery gives off numerous branches to supply the muscles of the anterior compartment, such as the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and fibularis tertius (peroneus tertius).
At the ankle joint, it passes over the front of the ankle, just lateral to the extensor hallucis longus tendon. Here, it is often palpable and is a common site for measuring the dorsal pedal pulse.
On reaching the foot, the anterior tibial artery continues as the dorsalis pedis artery. This artery is responsible for supplying blood to the dorsal aspect of the foot and is also an important site for palpating the pulse.
Overall, the anterior tibial artery plays a crucial role in the vascular supply to the lower leg and foot. Its health and integrity are important for leg function and mobility.
