Sorry for my inadequate English. About the preludium: YES! This is the way to play the preludium! I'm pretty sure that Newman here are closer to the baroque style than anyone else! The rhythm sounds very convincing!
Sorry for my inadequate English. This performance of the preludium is more important for the understanding of baroque music, than every performances of Karl Richter, Helmut Walcha and many other "great" organ players. In my opinion, Anthony Newman understand the details in the sheet music correctly.
There are lots of things to learn and appreciate from this performance. The harpsichord always has something to teach me about Bach's organ works. We are often so tied to the score and how we have heard these works interpreted for years. Great job
I love Bach on Harpsichord. I've always felt that Bach's music was better illustrated, defined, and projected through the Harpsichord. On Organ, which I'm not really a fan of, beautiful compositions like this becomes to intertwined in itself. All the notes just bleed into one another, and definition is lost. I love that I can hear each and every note, whether they're single lines or in opposition to one another. There is clarity, each note projects purpose, and all beautifully illustrated in sound. Anthony Newman believed the Bach played at a great speed since, and probably played everything on the Harpsichord. I cannot cite his comments, but I do believe that he is quoted as saying such on his Anthony Newman plays Bach on Harpsichord album back cover. That album is a Masterpiece btw. The definitive Bach interpretation. Otherwise, what do I know, as I predominantly listen to Metal, and Progressive Rock.
a lot of strange repeated notes in the manuals when the bass has its dotted octaves .. the autograph shows tied-over notes (syncopations) whereas Newman ignores the ties and plays the treble note twice. Bach was a lot subtler than Newman, it seems.
