Thank you John for another precious interview. Anthony's voice is almost ASMR to me, but I love the british, subtle, ironic way he uses to narrate his memories and his experiences with one of the most important band in the world

I've been very fortunate to spend time with Ant over the years since 1988...it all started with a letter in 1987 (after purchasing his solo albums from the beginning), then a studio visit in 1988 and many other times since then. Ant is so humble, VERY funny, and extremely generous with his time. It's been a real treat to learn about the history behind his music and to see him play at his home. He has an incredible and diverse catalog...and all of his library music, much of which has not been released to the public.

He is such a good writer/composer, and seems to be an upright bloke as well. I would have loved 6 for a few albums in my alternate mind-eye history. 😮 Thank you for these, John. Ant deserves to be heard.

I love that he was worried about possibly talking out of school about Mott the Hoople 40 years after the fact lol. Shows you what a nice guy he is. I hope he has one more guitar album left in him , one of life's great pleasures is listening to him work his magic on the 12 string. Are you a fan of his solo work John ?

I greatly appreciated Ant's written contributions to the early Genesis material, and his solo material. Steve, whom I also appreciate enormously, gave the band a different energy. I understand that they became good friends.

I think I’ve seen bits at least of all of these Genesis interviews. This and Phil Collins’s are the only two I watched in their entirety, though-just because I found these two particularly pleasant and engaging. If Anthony Phillips were an obscurity rather than a celebrity of sorts, I’d love to have him as a personal friend.

To add to that, I can't remember the name of the podcast, but I'm in canada and there is a guy in Nova Scotia who has a podcast of some sort, and he basically got hold of 'Ant' to be on his show. For the life of me I can't remember what it was any more, but I remember hearing the beginning and what struck me is what seems common in many of his interviews is he spends as much time asking the hosts about the places where they live as talking about himself. Just don't ask him if he regrets leaving Genesis.

FANTASTIC!! Thank you John. As always, I am deeply enjoying these un-cut Genesis interviews. I remember immediately after watching the Sum of the Parts doc, my first thought - I want to see bonus footage! I KNOW there’s more. I never would’ve dreamed I’d be able to see the entire clips.

They were the only band that maintained good relations after the numerous splits. My admiration for them is also around the fact that all five "principal" members all had successful solo careers, some more so than others of course.

Really enjoyed hearing about the genesis of Genesis. Would they have formed without him? I saw them at the Marquee club just after Trespass came out and was truly mesmerized. Peter used a bass drum then as well as playing flute. I can only think of the Kinks as the other English- centric band.

Am I the only one that would love to see a 12-string album put together by Ant and Steve Hackett? I think they could work some real magic together.

He plays with Steve some on the album "out of the tunnels mouth". Both though are lead players, and there's a definite personality type to a lot of musical positions and Phillips has said he wouldn't want to do more because he wouldn't want to jeopardize their friendship. Mike has always been a great rhythm player so even that would be cool, but at this point, well, Steve's got a new album, you take what you can get:) I think real musical innovation and maybe even inspiration comes when people are young or under some kind of pressure I don't think we're ever going to hear anything 'seminal' from any of these guys, and frankly they'd be right to say "what, MORE??":) After listening to Strings of Light I had the thought that what would be really interesting from Anthony Phillips would be a christmas album of midieval christmas carols done with some of the many different instruments he has, sort of the way Loreena McKennitt has done them, or Bruce Cockburns Riu Riu Chiu. One time when I was really into Trespass I remember writing a 'return to white mountain' because I really hated how that ended, and a pipe dream I had at the time is it would be cool to have all guitarists of Genesis, Ant, Steve, Tony, Mike, even Darryl, add a flavour. But after awhile of listeing to a lot of musicians you realize this is mostly because we've been suckered into notions of celebrity, I've now personally met a dozen guys just nearby who are phenomenal guitarists. But then of course I said "ok, write me a musical sequel to white mountain" and as Rick Wright says, "well, if I knew how to repeat Dark Side I would". Although in some other news, the guy at Rocky Mountain Music, who has worked with both Phillips and Hackett has said that they have an upcoming project with......Tony Banks. So life and music goes on. And Phillips has said he'll probably play music til he can't anymore, and hopefully that will be awhile.

Great interview! I my mind he was a vy good guitarist on early Genesis. The guitar on The Serpent is superb. Why they downgrade that 1st album is beyond me. Course it had some problems, but when first heard in early mid 70's I absolutely loved many of the songs on it.

Same thing happened to him while I enrolled the band to perform at the 'battle of the bands' the following year... Had to draft another guitarist for that gig; but alas, our original guitarist still played behind the stack of amplifiers! Needless to say, we came only second that night!

Back in 2001, I had a 4 piece band in Sweden and convinced the proprietors to give us chance on a Friday evening to play at their bar... I was the singer and rhythm guitarist while the lead/solo guitarist had to hide behind one of the columns that supported the whole building, because of 'stage fright'... It was kind of funny for the people who heard the solos and not understanding where they came from..

Hello. John. Thanks again for this two part video. He seem like a very nice man. I love his first album! He's like Steve very prolific as a musician but not commercial. And that's not a bad thing:) Actually Im curious. Did you start with Ant when you did the interviews or did you did the five guys first? Just curiosity. Bonne journée!

So interesting that with both Ant and Peter, the rest of the band didn’t suggest a break rather than a complete split. English thing?
@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 6 месяцев назад
I dont think. You have to remember isn't a band at that time with a ton of money to rest on their laurels. That saying may be an english thing:) But as they've said, they were deep in debt til after Peter, but after peter they got Tony Smith and proper management that wasnt' buying race horses. If you recall when Phil was GOING to leave, both Tony and Mike said 'well hold on, we're working on solo albums'. If they were working on solo albums then obviously there was at least a little wiggle room. And then there were three got them that hit, which means they had a couple of years with some money in the bank. I remember a movie about a guy who had ONE hit and basically retired. Maybe it wasn't that, but they obviously COULD take a break.
@peterdixon7734
@peterdixon7734 6 месяцев назад
Was the One-Hit guy Fred Wedlock? Or perhaps Don McClean, who did American Pie? Someone asked Don what American Pie meant, and Don replied that it meant that he never had to work again. Of course, Vincent was another massive hit. Don would never sing the same song twice in exactly the same way, to give the audience a different take on it every night.
@mikearchibald744
@mikearchibald744 6 месяцев назад
@@peterdixon7734 Its possible I can't quite remember, there are probably a number of them, it usually depends on how good their managers are. I think The Verve said their megahit, uh, dammit, I forget what its called but you've heard it, but they get nothing from it. That guy that did Margaritaville apparantly parlayed that hit into a BILLION dollar empire somehow. All I know about that is that anybody who even SAID 'Margaritaville' got threatened with a lawsuit unless they paid up. But he was also big on the concert circuit and I think there's a documentary on his fans, they have their own name, I can't remember it. But its too bad Ant wasn't in america or did some really big shows. I'd heard Rick Danko basically got way too much drug money from ''this wheels on fire' when Absolutely Fabulous was on. Apparantly that was a huge check. Getting your song onto a hit show is big money. On a related note thats not so related, apparantly that guy in Mott The Hoople had a song called 'england rocks' which got turned into 'cleveland rocks' on the Drew Carey Show, so he likely got some big bucks for that. Next to going to Vegas, thats about the best thing a songwriter can get. Just on an unrelated note, I was shopping at two stores yesterday and noticed two big songs being played but by generic singers. LIkely some company is saving a FEW bucks by taking pop songs and getting joe no name to sing them. I worked retail before and its godawful listenign to billy joel over and over again, but now its piano man by 'just some guy'. All to save a few pennies. Welcome to the new world.
