Anthony Phillips was a founding member of Genesis at Charterhouse School with Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. His musical influence was felt strongly on the albums "From Genesis to Revelation" and "Trespass" and lingered after his departure from the group in 1970. As a solo artist his albums such as "Geese and the Ghost", "Wise After the Event", "Sides" and "1984" all earned him a loyal following. In part two of this two part Cherry Red TV interview, possibly one of the most in depth he has done, he discusses his time with Genesis and his long solo career as a recording artist and composer.

Isn’t it lovely to hear an erudite man speak freely like this in an interview? Credit to Mark Powell for not interrupting!

Probably the most underrated musician/composer around today. I've been a die hard Genesis fan (up to Wind and Wuthering) for years but for some reason Ant slipped under my radar. I was vaguely aware of him but it wasn't until I was browsing Amazon for Steve Hackett albums that the Geese and the Ghost kept popping up. I eventually took a punt on it and fell in love with Ant's music. My personal favourite album being Field Day. Both parts of these interviews were fascinating!

The internet was where I finally heard of him. I always loved Trespass but since he's not the singer I really didn't know the history any more than Phil did. And I like to go slow so there's still so much I haven't yet heard.

Gr8 stuff. Love the way Mark Powell let's Anthony Phillips speak without interruption. This is the key to this great interview. My son is named Anthony Phillp.....totally coincidental as that is my dad (Anthony) and father in laws (Phillip) names, but I love that it reminds me of Anthony Phillips. Love Ants music.....amazing stuff and very underrated.....

Anthony is a very artistic musician who created atmospheric relaxing music rather than dancing music. I prefer his earlier music where he used old English medieval guitars n flutes because it's very hard to find that type of music which is very uniquely English, and can only be found in England, not to mention Jethro Tull as well. He definitely influenced the Genesis sound of old England. But people probably don't really realize this type of music until they get older and more mature, by then the artists have moved on to other fields of music because there wasn't much public support at the time.

Loreena McKennitt puts a lot of that into her music, her earlier albums especially but also her christmas ones.

If Mr. Phillips is going to revisit Slow Dance I would encourage him to add the "Single Demo" version that can be found on his first "Archive Collection". To my ears that recording represents the culmination of the themes heard on the album; whereas the album itself progresses towards a recapitulation without actually getting there.

The Geese and The Ghost is a unique work of genius. I shared a life moment with a dear friend playing this music which will stay engraved in our memories to our death. Very grateful for this.

I recently listened to Trespass for the first time in years. The complexity, tone and clarity of the guitar work is stunning. the soloing in particular was never bettered. I do hope he thinks about some live work soon. Im sure there'd be no shortage of great musicians jumping at the chance to perform with him. Maybe one of the intimate and friendly prog festivals..

I'd love to hear Ant live in a decent, intimate atmosphere like a small club. Maybe it will happen? I wasn't ever expecting that Kate Bush would perform live again or that there would be Rainbow concerts, but both things happened :-)

It is so fortunate that got Ant to do this while his mind/memory was still so sharp. That is never a guarantee as we age.....

Big fan of Anthony Phillips work thanks for sharing.... Didnt Anthony Phillips work with Steve Hackett recently... It would be great if he could work with Genesis members on a another album. Anthony was definitely one of the architecs of the original 12 string guitar Genesis sound before they went pop.

Good interview, and if you have enjoyed it, read Mike Rutherfords book and the pieces join nicely and complete vital parts of the puzzle- moreso on Pt1. For my generation, there was the gaps (time, a long time when you are a late teenager) between albums that Ant filled with Geese- becuase it obviously sound musically like Trespass in parts.

I think Anthony Phillips was responsible for me buying a 12 string acoustic. Then I had a string of musicians buying 12 string guitars and bringing them to me to get it to play like mine. It was great hearing these two parts. Good idea splitting it into two. "Wise After the Event" was what came to my mind when he spoke of electrical interference/clicking noises. You just have to look for the device that is turning on and off, and the usual culprit is the fridge. Shame to think it interfered with such creativity - but he got through it and still created great music.

It drives me crazy that Anthony Phillips is almost never mentioned or thought of whenever Genesis fans of their early material beg, plead, wish, hope for a reunion. Phillips is a great talent and he is a founding member. I think it's shameful that any of us Genesis fans to forget about Anthony Phillips. There is no reason why a reunion with Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, Hackett couldn't also include Phillips...if Phil could still drum and a reunion were to happen. Why not? And here is an idea. How about we forget a concert or a tour. How about if all 6 of them just get into the studio for a few years and write, compose, and record new material for a new album, not trying to recapture anything but just letting the creativity and originality flow naturally based on where they are now as artists and musicians.

We didn't all forget about him, but thats just a 'certain' group of fans always clamouring for that. As Eric Idle said, you don't actually want that, you just want to be young again. Musically none of them have been really prolific with new stuff, but its fun to think about what would happen in a room jamming. But Anthony said he wouldn't even play with Steve because he gets along with him too well and admits that would strain a friendship. Thats why they call it 'working'. But its funny to see them all in interviews because they all seem the complete opposite of what we hear about them creating together. Its like John Cleese said about Terry Jones, when you are serious about what you are doing and not just filling in time, then there is such a thing as 'artistic differences'.

I wonder if Genesis had a concert for charity with both Phil and Pete and Steve showing up, whether Ant could be persuaded to come out at least for one song.

He has said that he couldn't even go to Genesis concerts as a member of the AUDIENCE. He does have a couple of videos where you can see him play. But I think that ship has sailed. Apparantly he couldn't even be persuaded at the concerts Genesis gave just for their manager.
