I learned this years ago by programming midi drums in a DAW. I used REAPER. Everything is quantized and snapped to a grid which is determined by the time signature. Playing with snare hit placements, syncopation, and polyrythms. Didn't know at the time that I was teaching myself deep rhythmic concepts and developing a method for visualizing rhythm. Now it's hard to NOT see what I hear. it's like two separate tools became one. Cool lesson for people who haven't been exposed to this way if thinking though. Great video
@stxxcrisler
@stxxcrisler 6 лет назад
I think Midi is a fantastic way to get this idea across. It's visually simple, and really allows you to play with time. I THINK Anthony and Vic are leading up to showing that, for instance, Latin music does not have a perfectly even grid (neither does swing). We can adjust our grids to create more interesting grooves, and better reflect the "Ethnic Grooves" we are less familiar with. Ever thought of repeating rhythms on a "circle grid"? It is less useful, musically, I think, but the geometry helps illustrate the relationship between notes in a neat way.
@brincher

Same with me. I was really bad at mastering and mixing in general, so I started creating patterns where the instruments avoided each other's places, then a HUGE amount of amazing rhythms emerged for me. It was an awesome feeling.

"...You just want to have an intellectual way to understand it..." Great method to visually conceptualize the physical placement of a note. This same method is really effective to conceptualize note duration as well, especially so when trying to understand syncopation and syncopated note value, and their placement for drummers (since our drum "notes" are essentially all attack and no sustain in comparison to other instruments like a horn, or in this case a bass, that can hold a note).

A way to blow your western centric music mind is to realize that the down beat doesn’t have to be counted as one. Like how language doesn’t necessarily has to be read from left to right. In a 4 beat groove we feel the downbeat as the beginning of the groove, (1) 2 3 4. But that is just one way of looking at it. There is no natural law that says it has to be the beginning, the downbeat can also notate the ‘end’ of a groove, 1 2 3 (4). Might seem trivial or just semantics but to me it has a completely different feel. Like how in reggae the downbeat is on 3, the middle of the loop, instead of the beginning.

The bass/piano teacher I used to have would always spend a part of the lesson on rhythm. He'd jot out a bar of notes and rests on a sheet of paper and get me to tap out the rhythm on my knees. He got to using some really awkward time signatures too. I used to hate doing it, but it was so beneficial to my playing and music reading. He also got me into the book "Modern Reading Text in 4/4" which is full of pages of rhythms in the same vein to tap out. I used to take my kindle to the toilet with me and try to tap out a whole page without fucking up while doing my business. Highly recommend this book.

Hello Anthony, Hope you have plans on coming to Atlanta, GA in 2020 for a future clinic workshop! THANK you and to Victor also for your "teaches rhythm..." RU-vid! I just STRUGGLE trying to play in correct time "Got To Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye. Would you consider producing another RU-vid, Clinic, or offering Private Lessons solely for teaching "how" with Visuals to play in time (between the beats), just the first couple of minutes of this song? So many other Bass Guitarists on RU-vid are busy offering how to play Grooves & Patterns & Improvisations, but none seem concerned with connecting with their audience's real needs. Your "teaches rhythm..." RU-vid in my opinion, is the most VALUABLE LESSON I've seen since College back in the mid 70s. All the Best, and Hope to see you and Victor here in Atlanta soon !
