During my time as an undergraduate anthropology student at UCLA, I have come to find that people often confuse both anthropology and archaeology. While many people often believe that anthropology and archaeology are the same thing, I am here to tell you that they are not. In fact, anthropology and archaeology have a complex relationship each with specialized goals in how they try to understand humans. I hope this video helps in your understanding of the differences between anthropology and archaeology!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

I don't necessarilly agree on the last point because there are areological finds that do effect modern cultures. For example finding the dead sea scrolls had a tremendous impact on our understanding of the accuracy of the biblical record. Now this isn't always the case. most artifacts while informative have limited impact on the issues of the modern day, but in some cases the finds can be profoundly impactful.

Hi, I have been trying to decide what I major in for college and I would love some advice. I have always known I have wanted to do social studies regarding humans but I wasn’t very well educated on what I could major in. I jumped around at first wanting to understand humans so I tried Psychology at my high school and I hated it. I have been for a while considering a double major in history and anthropology, but after this video I am unsure. I want to study ancient people and get a sense of old culture from ancient civilizations, to monarchy’s, to the Stone Age people ETC. Furthermore, how these cultures influences have affected us to this day and just kind of make these past humans more human (if that makes any sense). From what I have heard from this video it would seem to be more interesting to major in archeology and minor in history, or even an anthro major focusing on archeology… but I still am a little confused to be honest. Any insight you could give on my current dilemma would be much appreciated! Love the videos

It depends on what part of archaeology you want to do. It depends on what regional archaeology you want to do. But generally, I keep hearing that Northern Arizona University is a great school for archaeology. Arizona State University and University of Arizona - Tuscon are great schools too.

I think you can. The ethnography may need to be different in order to do so. It may depend on the on the group and culture of the people. Many American indigenous people are still very connected to their past. If they trust you enough, understand their culture and worldview enough, and ask the right questions, these people may take you to areas that can be considered as archaeological in nature.
@Trustory198
@Trustory198 Год назад
Well, it is much difficult and more entangled that you explain… Archaeology do observe present, most American and British archaeologists did that… and the fact the archaeology uses a anthropological thinking doesn’t make it just simply part of it…

I do not agree with your explanation of difference between anthropology and archaeology. As I understand the major source material for archaeology to understand the past cultures is material culture. But at the same time archaeologists takes the help of anthropologists and adopts the method of anthropology to understand the past through he observations of the present - otherwise known as ethno-archaeology. Therefore, Binford's seminal article on 'Archaeology as Anthropology'. Similarly, for better understanding the cultural system and process of the present, one need to understand the past of that community. Hence archaeology. Without archaeology, no ethnographic study is possible. In fact to understand the present day communities from a total perspective, one need to know the past of that community. Take the example of ethnohistory of a community as anthropologists study. The method that an anthropologist adopts to reconstruct the ethnohistory of a community is through mostly intangible aspects of that community. No where the ethnohistory is reconstructed by an anthropologist considering the cultural materials particularly tangible that an archaeologist recovers. In such circumstances I do not think that reconstruction of ethnohistory of a community will be justified. Besides, there are many such instances where without the help of archaeologists and without adopting the methods of archaeology, the study of anthropology cannot be fulfilled. Therefore, why not we term 'Anthropology as Archaeology', the way Binford writes 'Archaeology as Anthropology'. I would love to have your reaction on it. Hi! Thanks so much for diving into this, I really enjoy hearing differing perspectives from my own. I completely agree with you in that archaeology informs our present understanding of cultures around the world. I think when it comes to the nuances of archeology and anthropology, it becomes astronomically more difficult to separate the two (especially because archaeology IS anthropology). It's been a while since I filmed this video so I do not recall everything that I said but I do agree that ethno-archaeology is important. My goal in this video was to help entry-level anthropologists and archaeologists get a better idea of the differences. Thanks so much again for your perspective-you bring up wonderful points.
