The British anti-European party UKIP led by Nigel Farage is topping opinion polls in Thursday's Rochester and Strood by-election. The ballot was called as the sitting MP Mark Reckless defected from the Conservatives to UKIP. The party won its first elected seat in Westminster last month.

No, it's actually losing power over the continent. Uk will have to obey EU law in or out. But they will loose their place in the European Parliament and Council and will have no power over what EU law looks like.

Ukip has never been anti-European and so the statement is either ignorant or deliberately misleading. Ukip simply thinks the UK is harmed by being in the European Union. I was conned by lying politicians when in the mid 70s I did vote to join the Common Market on the conditional basis that it would NOT be a political union. I was lied to and have never forgotten that. Every time Ukip is misrepresented their popularity increases. So carry on news programmes, tell lies or show your ignorance: Either way Ukip will grow.
