I recently moded a deck for the first time. I followed along with your how to video. I only messed up on one card because I was distracted when I was cutting it but it was salvageable. I was able to do a nearly perfect job because of you. Thank you so much 💕 Its my favorite deck, The Terot of the Sidhe. It was too big for my hands to comfortably shuffle. Now I can use the deck comfortably.

Also, so what if you change the art. Once a deck is sold, that's it--it's out of the creator's hands and into the big, open world. If they object to people modding their art (and I know one tarot creator who lost her cool over it), they shouldn't sell it.
@DawnMichelleTarot
@DawnMichelleTarot 2 года назад
I do have to say I totally agree with that. I pretty much approach each deck as it's mine and I can do with it what I want. I've only ever seen one creator as well get upset about it, most of the creators I talk to love the creative aspect of it. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

I never thought I’d hear your name with anti-mod in one sentence especially since you are the one who encouraged me to bond and make that deck mine. I also appreciate this video coming now. I am having a bed day; have an autoimmune disease and today isn’t a good body day .. so this was a great distraction. I don’t think modification the deck in anyway is disrespectful. As long as you do it with care and respect in mind, you can do whatever. Turning a tarot into an oracle is one extreme modification but if that’s how the deck speaks to you .. you should do it imo. It’s better than rehoming it or neglecting them. For example, some of us have no access to a community to trade or sell their decks and I don’t think that’s in anyway better than modification. Edit: the main reason I didn’t get Oak, Ash and Thorn is the white boarders. I can’t like it as is and for some reason the art feels less tarot to me. I can see it’s gorgeous and I am having an inner crisis because I can’t love it as is. I think I’d like it more if there was a line around the boarders .. like how the wild unknown .. it’s actually a very sensitive topic to me because I worry I will regret not having it but I can’t connect to it as is. I also don’t trim busy decks too ..

I'm so sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I myself have an autoimmune disease and often have bed days myself so I'm sending you lots of healing energy! You could potentially draw on a thin line border yourself on the deck. I think that might actually look great. Hope you feel better soon. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

Such an interesting review. Loved it. I haven’t modified very many decks-yet, but I certainly don’t agree with the theory that modification ruins the artistic intention. I would think the artist’s main intention is to create something that can be used and enjoyed as well as appreciate. I thought your reasons were quite valid and very meaningful. Stay safe and well.

LOVE this video. You really know what you are talking about, and so many of your reasonings aligns with my own thoughts and feelings about them. Not always known until I hear you say it, but I agree wholeheartedly! It´s so great to hear that you are really thinking through the pros and cons before cutting into a deck, or even setting a marker to the edges. Thank you, Dawn Michelle! I enjoy your video´s SO much, and I also love the aesthetics of your presentations. 💜

I know I tend to have a "collector" mindset, and I used to collect Magic The Gathering cards (you trade an addiction for another i guess) but i also loved seeing all the card alterations the community would come up with. Some people made borderless versions of the cards, some made custom tokens, some added new elements, removed text, etc. I used to make custom tokens myself, my little local playstore loved them, it was so much fun. Also as an artist myself, I think seeing that your work inspires so many people sounds delightful, and I think we should embrace the sharing of creativity and stop being so precious about art. Also, I got a new deck for my birthday a few days ago and I think it would look beautiful edged in blue or purple, but i'm a bit afraid to mess it up. I've made lots of paper crafts before, I'm usually of the mindset of "you learn by doing", but it feels a bit too precious right now ^^'

I did end up trimming my Paulina Tarot - initially because the cards were a bit too big for me to handle easily. And then I realised that I either needed to take the borders off completely or have weird looking cards... So I took the entire border off and wrote the suit and number on with a Sharpie. I actually love it even more now - for me, it feels like the artwork shows better without the border, plus it's a super cute small deck now.

Barbara Walker Tarot has been on my list forever. After I watched your video featuring it, I went on the hunt for an reasonably priced vintage issue deck. I've got one coming and I splurged and bought the companion book too. I wanted the vintage copy because the reprint's colors were "off".....you know how that happens. Excited to dive into the book! I personally like borders, but I have modded a few decks.

It's funny - it hadn't even occurred to me that whitespace-heavy decks don't need to be edged! I'm still working my way through the list of huge cards with massive borders (I'm looking at you, Druid Craft) or nasty gilding ☹

I did trim a copy of the Wild Unknown tarot, and found it impossible to do so without cutting into the text on the top of some cards. And, I liked how it looked better with the borders. Made the same mistake on "tattoo tarot: ink and intuition"; it looks better with borders! p.s. I preferred the gilding on the first edition Forager's Daughter (one of the reasons I'm not backing the current edition, even though I was so tempted!)

Okay, I haven't even watched yet - but I had to comment on how BRILLIANT this topic is! Had a literal zing of excitement when I saw the title coz I love the anti-haul vids that Lisa does and you are the total Queen of mods, so yeah. Super excited to watch! Edit: I don't really get the concept of why someone thinks the deck is inherently sacred. It's commercial cardstock printed with commercial inks, serving as a tool to tap into our own intuition or guidance or whatever. Whatever way we can establish that connection and bond through the cards to a higher level of guidance, that's up to the individual. My take anyway. Final edit 😁: Awesome video! I've modded several decks because of your videos. Though I've never edged a deck. I love cutting down the cards so I can see the art better, but I'm *waaaayyyy* too lazy to run a marker around the edges, wipe off each card, lay them out to dry, etc. Maybe someday (never say never).
@DawnMichelleTarot
@DawnMichelleTarot 2 года назад
For my quicker edging jobs, I use a single tombow marker and edge the deck while I'm watching TV. I've found the tombows (except for the black) don't need to be wiped down or time to set to dry. So I can just play with them while sitting on the couch. It might be worth a try if you want to try your hand at edging. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

I tested out removing the white borders from my Night Sun and realized I actually preferred the white borders. 😅 I feel the same way about the borders on the Anima Mundi tarot, I guess the white compliments some decks while it detracts from others. Most of the time the only mod I do is edge the sides. I'm thinking of getting gilding pens because I feel like the Magic of You Oracle looks like it should have gilding to me.

Thank you for not trimming the Barbara Walker tarot (tin version). I recently received the deck and I DO love it just as it is. The borders don't bother me, but because of the image size I feel leaving it as is works nicely. I did see a video of someone who did trim the borders off and the deck just didn't feel the same. Regarding copyright detail on the cards... I *believe* it may be contracted through some publishers that the copyright has to be printed on some of the creator's deck. I think this depends on the agreement between the creator and publishing house. Honestly, the © info doesn't detract me from working with a deck. BUT if it is emblazoned inside the image with some bold or text than this would be an issue! 😉
@DawnMichelleTarot
@DawnMichelleTarot 2 года назад
Yeah sometimes the copyright is nicely done and blends into the design and in that case that doesn't bother me at all. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️
@lauriemadsen9051
@lauriemadsen9051 2 года назад
Obviously, I can't stop thinking about this vid, haha. I don't think I could handle the copyrights on the fronts of the Barbara Walker. I think I would cut off the sides and then color in the remaining top/bottom white borders on the backs using masking tape/painter's tape and a large, chisel-tip permanent marker. Or, I wouldn't worry about the backs (but it did go faster than expected when I recently did this process on the backs of the Halloween Tarot). You would likely have to edge in the same color, as some would bleed onto the edges. And then a mini cloth bag and repurpose the tin to hold small casting charms or something? If it didn't seem worth the process, I would probably determine that it wasn't a deck I was invested enough in to be worth keeping. But of course that's just me, and I have lots of extra time on my hands lately! Plenty of people hardly seem to notice copyrights on the front of cards at all! I think I would also trim the Lisa Hunt deck, unless the border printing was super uneven. I think that kind of soft, delicate art looks great when "set free."

I have a 1st edition copy of the Beautiful Creatures tarot by Jasmine Beckett-Griffith. Since it's OOP, I'm very hesitant to trim it. I could get the 2nd edition that's still in print... but the 2nd edition has a gorgeous purple guilding that I wouldn't want to take off. 😭😭😭
@GAwildflower
@GAwildflower 2 года назад
🤩💜 The second edition's purple gilding is everything!! I don't prefer metallic gilding, but it matches the "energy" of the deck so well. I don't know if the first edition is glossy but the second edition is more matte, and minus splitting the deck to fit the packaging, it is overall very well done. 👌

I love borders but I have removed borders that detract from my using a deck, I’m looking at you Lo Scarabeo, 8 translations on border is too much, although they have started to alter this by adding a symbol for the suits and removing all writing bar the number.

Occasionally the gilding on a deck will bother me physically, but usually I'm neutral on aesthetics. There are some decks where the gilding is a beautiful and apt addition to the deck. But I have recently gotten a deck where the gilding doesn't work for me aesthetically, and I intend to lightly sand the edges and recolor with black. I know sanding can be tricky, but if it doesn't work I can always trim slivers off (there's a black border on the face of the cards). It's just that trimming a deck is an awful lot of fiddly work.
@DawnMichelleTarot

I've heard alot of people who have good success with sanding off the gilding. I've never done it myself as things like that tend to irritate my asthma, but I've seen it done beautifully. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

Hi thanks for a great video. Re trimming - my Fiskars is a trimmer with the cheese wire esq sliding cutting action as compared to your up and down guillotine style. Do you think this makes a difference to the end result and have you used the other type that I have? Xx
@DawnMichelleTarot
@DawnMichelleTarot 2 года назад
In my experience it does make a difference. The slide trimmers seem to just rip through the cards rather than cut them. They are generally made for paper cutting and have trouble with the thicker cardstock. I have seen people use them with decent results, but in my experience they always just tore my cards. I do believe I have a video on my mod tools if that helps. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️
