Welcome to Anti-Tank Chats, a brand-new series on the history of infantry weapons used in Anti-Tank warfare. In the first episode, Archive and Supporting Collections Manager Stuart Wheeler, explores the weapons used by Germany during the First World War when they were first presented with this cutting-edge weapon - the tank. Shoutout and thanks to @T. Hanks for inadvertently suggesting the name for this new series and all the others who enjoyed Stuart’s talk on the Pak 43/41. • Tank Chats Special | P...

You can kind of see why the Germans didn't really make many tanks of their own in WW1, given they were well aware of all the ways they could be knocked out. From my understanding it was the battle of Amiens and the use of tanks in combined arms that really made them wake up and realize how important they were. And by that point it was too late. Just goes to show that tanks, like any military capability, must be used as part of a system. Great Video!

I'm surprised no mention was made of "Lone gunner of Flesquières Ridge Another curious factor is the puzzling story of the ‘lone gunner of Flesquières Ridge’. The story centres around a gunner who remained with his battery and fired the only surviving gun single-handed, knocking out at least five tanks before he was shot down. The story was seized on by General Harper to prove that his infantry dispositions were not at fault under the circumstances, and was selected by Field Marshal Haig in one of his reports as an example of the courage of individual German soldiers and, it is said, to explain the disaster that had occurred. The Germans had never heard of this heroic act but concluded that it must refer to Sergeant Theodor Kruger, and in due course erected a statue to him. Philippe Gocrznski, in Following the Tanks also mentions Sergeant Kruger, saying that he was found, dead, alongside a gun of his battery but there is no evidence that he was ever alone. In the meantime the number of tanks knocked out by the ‘lone gunner’ had risen from five to sixteen. Gorczynski reckons that in all some forty tanks were knocked out although he attributes this to a number of batteries, not just one, let alone one gun. It is also interesting to observe that the British Official Report claims that the ‘lone gunner’ was an officer whereas the German version shows him as an N. C. O."

@guypierson5754
@guypierson5754 3 года назад
Not even the charge, least those lads saw it coming and had some stuff to hide behind. What about those lads in the back areas that got machine gunned by "Musical Box" and the like during those first break throughs. You've never seen a tank, don't know it exists, and you've no trench or bunker, just your tent and the cook hut between you and a metal machine spitting bullets as it roars towards you. You'd think the war was over. The way the German gunners started engaging and taking out tanks on the first days, I think on the ground in the trenches, they knew something big was coming, musta heard those engines start in the mist and knew this was what the Brits and French had been working on, they hadn't been waiting on the Americans, they hadn't been building concrete bunkers, they had been building steel ones that moved.

The German 'stick' grenade, being an offensive grenade, had about five times the explosive charge of a Mills Bomb. The latter was made to spread fragments while the German grenade could be used to blow up wire entanglements, or generate lethal blast inside trenches. As such, even without the multi-head modification, they would have been a considerable threat to the underside and tracks.

Which is why the British tanks often had a small roof or screen over the top of the tank to keep grenades from exploding directly against the armor.

Great stuff, especially about the German artillery. The only correct ion I would make is that the machine gun identified as that MG08 is actually the MG08/15, which was lightened and equipped with a bipod to make it more mobile.

In the WW1 museum in Kansas City MO there is a Renault FT on display that was actually knocked out by the same type of 77mm gun he talks about in the first part of this video. Part of the display is parts of the shrapnel shell that were recovered inside the tank after it penetrated the armor. That crew obviously had a very bad day.

@mur4592
@mur4592 2 года назад
I was at the museum recently and it's stated that the damage was actually caused when it was taken as a trophy and strapped to the outside of a tank. Particularly damaged by the heat of tanks exhaust. Which says something about how uncomfortable it must have been inside
@deeznoots6241
@deeznoots6241 Год назад
The armour penetration is largely a result of it being a 75mm gun, at that point a simple solid metal shell will do a lot of damage, there is a reason why interwar anti-tank guns are usually 35-50mm, the extra penetration was unneeded until the more armoured tanks of ww2 came about

Familiarity with tanks and their strengths and weaknesses is a huge factor in how effective infantry can be against tanks. Infantry with little or no experience with tanks would be intimidated and probably feel pretty helpless. However once you realize exactly how blind and vulnerable tankers are you can take advantage.

It is good to remember that almost immediately the Germans found out that that regular cannons, like the 75mm cannons could open up the tanks like the Mark Ist with it's thin 6mm to 12mm armour or later with the first anti-tank, the 13mm T-gewehr in May 1918 was issued to the troops...
@idanceforpennies281
@idanceforpennies281 3 года назад
This is good. People think you needed a dedicated anti-tank weapon to destroy a tank, but this was not always the case. In 1940 (for example) all sorts of artillery firing normal HE rounds could easily stop a tank. Because tanks tend to move around this was pretty rare but..The short 75mm gun on the Panzer IV could knock out any Allied tank in 1940 even though it was not designed for this role. A HE round does not "bounce off" it has a HESH effect.

Specified as 13mm TuF - Tank und Flieger (tank and aircraft) round. The T-Gewehr was issued with late model MG08 bipods. The recoil was harsh, yes. But not as hard as you guys claim it to be. 13:13 Firing prone would make the recoil even worse!
@JosipRadnik1
@JosipRadnik1 3 года назад
I was about to say the same - prone is worse. If you are standing, it is much easier to absorb the recoil as your body would just bend back as much as it needs to dampen the effect which isn't working so well when your whole body stays inflexible on the ground and you have nothing but the little travel that the natural flexibility of your shoulder offers. Apart from that, I doubt the number of 5 times the recoil of a Lee-Enfield is correct. In theory probably, if you compare the amount of propellant - but not if you compare the much greater weight of the T-Gewehr itself which counters the recoiling force.
@joelvca

@@JosipRadnik1 "5 times the recoil of ..." The question is what metric are they using, recoil energy, recoil velocity, or some sort of felt-recoil metric?
@biggerhammer
@biggerhammer 3 года назад
If you have fire coming in, Prone makes you a smaller target. the bipod (necessary with such a huge weapon, also needs to be used from the prone, (can't shoot it standing, kneeling or sitting)
@JosipRadnik1
@JosipRadnik1 3 года назад
@@biggerhammer exept if you are in a trench or in a bomb crater - in that case you CAN fire it standing by simply resting the bipod on the elevated part of the terrain while standing in a depression. However - the claim was that soldiers had to fire the T-Gewehr from a prone position to somehow reduce the effect of the recoil and this is factually wrong just as EF already noticed it. I know from personal experience that firing from a prone position actually increases the recoil effect rather than reduce it.
