My mother is an anti vaxxer. I grew up in rural Kentucky, surrounded by other kids who were unvaccinated. One of them got the measles from somewhere and gave it to the entire homeschool group. I thank the stars every day my dad had enough sense to get us vaccinated behind her back, because we never got it. She thought it was “herd immunity” until the day they got divorced and he told her we were all vaccinated because he wasn’t going to let her kill his kids. I love my dad.

I am fully vaccinated according to the schedule in the '70s when I was little. My 25-year-old and 21-year-old are fully vaccinated according to the schedule from when they were young. But if you look at the vaccine schedule from the '80s and '90s versus now, it has absolutely exploded! There are so many more vaccines today than just 20 years ago. Like triple. My question is what things have we eradicated between the '80s and now? The only one I can find is chickenpox. Cool, I'm on board. My 25-year-old got the chicken pox shot. But if I had a newborn baby now and they wanted to give it Hep b and a vitamin k shot right out of the womb, which is recommended, I would have some questions. And then the amount of vaccines before they're two has just exploded. If I had a baby now I would definitely ask more questions before I did everything.

Read a reddit post about a couple with dad coming home from deployment and had their baby in for the usual doc's appointment. When vaccinations came up, wife says, "Oh, we're not having her vaccinated." And her husband shot her down quickly. Told her point blank that he was not having it. He's been to places where families would fight for their kids to get vaccinated. He's seen first hand what a place looks like without access to said vaccinations. As I remember it, they fought but husband was serious enough to consider divorce if it came down to it.

My cousin didn’t want to vaccinate her son. My grandma went completely off on her. She yelled at her, do you want to know how many of my friends and family members lost children from diseases you can protect your child from? In 1942 there was a Polio outbreak in the county over from us, we were afraid to send our children to school, we didn’t go to church. Your Grandpa would go to town only when we absolutely had to get supplies. He would strip down in the barn and we had set up a wash bucket where he would wash and then throw all his clothes in the boiling water. My cousin did decide to vaccinate.

My great great uncle had polio. He was an Ahole but joined many holiday dinners. My mother managed to get rubella and whooping cough when 3. The fever from the rubella killed some brain tissue and she had relearn everything, thankfully she was 3 and brain elasticity at that age is amazing. She later had cancer a few times. Vaxxing wasn’t even a question in my family. We saw the effects of these “childhood” diseases. My mom was immune compromised. I’ve noticed a lot of anti-vaxxers have never met someone who has actually suffered from these diseases or can die from them. It’s abstract to them. Ironically, most of them are vaxxed themselves.

I heard a story on reddit like this. Son's wife didn't vaccinate their kids. Her anti-vax DIL brought them over while she had her daughter's infant daughter sleeping upstairs who was only a few months old. The unvaccinated kids were all over the new baby before grandmother could stop them. The next week the baby is hospitalized and dies of whooping cough. Learns the DIL knew her kids were all "little sick with a cough" when she came over that day. Grandmother is furious and devastated. Refuses to talk to her son or his wife. Her daughter the baby's mother is devastated. Finally a family friend goes off on the son and his wife and clues them in on the fact that they may be directly responsible for the death of their infant niece. They show up to grandmother's house trying to defend themselves and she won't even let them inside. She's just in complete mourning and who can blame her.

I worked at a daycare and I learned very quickly that children are literally germ central. They’re like petri dishes! Sick or not, they carry every germ they touch and spread them like rats did the plague. It’s why a lot of hospitals have young children wear masks while visiting, or bans them unless the patient is a close relative or in critical condition. When it came to the infants, if one of the staff was sick, they weren’t aloud to come to work. If one of the staff got sick during work, they were sent home and the parents were notified immediately. Babies can’t get vaccinated because of their age, but when they get sick, it can be lethal. It’s why the infant room was cleaned EVERY DAY: tiles mopped, carpets vacuumed, shelves dusted, and toys scrubbed. To not vaccinate your child is setting them and everybody around them up for an outbreak. No topical oils or crystals are going to save your child from chicken pox, measles, or god forbid whooping cough! Hell, when one class caught hand-foot-mouth disease, it spread like wild fire! Kids are carriers, they need to be vaccinated!

I worked in a daycare and a kid came in really red in the face. His mom always dosed him with Tylenol so if we checked him he wouldn't show having a fever. Come to find out he had hand foot mouth disease. I was pregnant at the time and was made to leave. I called my dr over it and was told to watch for symptoms and if they showed up call back asap. Never got any thank goodness but the woman who ran the daycare was livid! I think she had to shut down a week at minimum and have the place deep cleaned. She even threatened the mom with the bill for it all bc she put not only the kids class he was in at risk but me and the babies in the next room. She told her if she ever brings him in again and she even suspects he was given meds for a fever she'd sue her for it all. I unfortunately didn't come back bc my kids were ready to advance to the 3 yr old room and there were no 2 yr olds for me. I question that still to this day. I think bc i was unmarried and pregnant in a church run daycare they moved my class up on purpose so i wasn't needed anymore.

My 3 year old son got Whooping Cought in 2015 when CA had a whooping cough epidemic. He had been vaccinated but wasn’t old enough to have received all the vaccinations. I remember being terrified! I wasn’t an anti vaxxer. He was in Urgent Care every other day for 2 weeks getting breathing treatments. Probably should have been admitted but the ICU was packed and I had other kids at home. He struggled for breath and couldn’t eat or sleep. People ask if I was mad the shot “didn’t work.” No! The shot was what kept him from being on a ventilator with all the babies! He had some immunity.

and the whooping cough vaccine is one of the lower effectiveness rates ("only" 80% effective), the vast majority virtually guarantee you won't get sick at all. even the covid vaccine, if it doesn't shield you from sickness entirely then at the very least it minimizes symptoms so it's a minor inconvenience instead of life-threatening.

You can catch Herpes without having an active cold sore. Fortunately, some people are just naturally immune to it. Babies most of all. So, I mean I'd ask them not to kiss my baby, and wash their hands first, maybe... But otherwise, they need to be exposed to germs. (And Herpes doesn't kill newborns. Staph? Yes. Syphilis? Yes. If they aren't treated or recognized. Now, the infections can cause blindness! For sure! But Herpes won't cause death in newborns. 😂) But tons of babies are born every year with Herpes of the mouth and they're just fine. 😂😂😂 It's not the end of the world. And babies immune systems are better than anyone else's. So I'll never understand why parents think THATS when they gotta protect them. It's later that they need do that.

I used to not get the flu vaccine as I got sick twice whenever I got it as a kid. Went about a decade without it (got all the others, though). This changed when my sister remarried to someone who can take a simple sniffle and end up hospitalized with severe pneumonia. She pointed out that medical science was doing better and insisted that I get vaccinated for the flu every year as we all live in the same house. It became even more imperative when our mother was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. She was right about the flu vaccine. I still get nauseous when I get it, but I don't get sick twice anymore like I used to. Even if I get sick twice, it doesn't hospitalize me. I'll take that instead of getting Mom and my brother-in-law hospitalized.

This is a huge factor about vaccines that people love to ignore. Vaccines may not prevent you from EVER getting a sickness, but they DO equip your body with the tools it needs to crush that disease when you eventually DO catch it. By being vaccinated against Whooping Cough, your immune system was equipped with the necessary tools to fight it off efficiently. You still got sick, but nowhere NEAR as badly as you would have been.b Vaccines are sort of like a military arsenal. Vaccination is like handing your immune system state-of-the-art weaponry to fight a war with, meanwhile unvaxxed people's immune systems are still fighting with spears and swords.

I read an old fashioned romance/adventure/real life story written at least 50 years ago. The apalling everyday reality of life before vaccinations was shocking. It was set in Canada in the early 1800's. The young woman from a wealthy family on the east coast of Canada fell in love with and married a young Canadian Mounty who was sent to a frontier fort. He came back to visit his young wife because it was too rough for young wives to live there. She went anyway. When she got there the other wives looked terribly worn down and oddly spoke of their first family, second family, third family. Because every 2-5 years a contagious disease came through and most if not all of their children died. So the children they had given birth to and raised died before the age of 5. That was the norm before vaccinations. Around the world, for millenia, and probably millions of years.

Our World in Data has some research on the mortality rate for children, which was about 50% globally (in the sense of both the global average and that every society/country they looked at with reliable records or well preserved archeological sites had a childhood mortality rate around 50%) until the late 1700s-early 1800s when it began to drop ,a little, in some industrialized countries. After that it fell more but even in the 20th century it continued to be high. In 1950, decades after the invention of some important vaccines and several years after the invention of penicillin, the global child mortality rate was still 27% (global average only now) and in Canada it was a little above 5%. I sometimes think about how basically everyone born over 200 years ago had at least one dead sibling by the time they were 20, and how the grief and family trauma must've effected people, society, medicine, etc. I'm a millennial and by the time I was 20 I only ever had two friends around my age or younger who had already lost a sibling.

I suffered from it and almost didn't make it. I was one of the first cases, before, when we only knew it was a type of Sars. Was very terrifying to take in breaths, and the lungs failed to do anything. Sleeping sitting up. The anguish.. it was awful. I was young (30) and healthy/fit. I thought it was a cold, or flu, but it went on for 3 months, till finally my lungs stopped working and my lips turned blue. An ER visit saved my life and I was told if I was a second longer (I live 5 mins from the hospital) I wouldn't be here. Steroids, and inhalers... For a year. Still, 4 years later I suffer myocardia and breathing issues. I am thankful to be here, but I know what you saw and... I am deeply sorry you and your mother had to go through that.

There's a story of small boat is ferrying a small group across a lake one guy gets his knife out and start digging a hole into the board between his feet. I researched vaccines in medical journals when I started my family, and found out the risk of adverse reactions drops dramatically at 18 mos. Since we decided I would stay home when the kids were small, their exposure risk was much lower than it would have been in daycare. We felt the benefits of delaying outweighed the risks, in our particular circumstances. I had whooping cough, measles, mumps and lots of other preventable illnesses as a kid; I wouldn't want my kids to go thru that! Whooping cough especially--terrifying! 😢

I certainly understand your fear and sadly your understated relation. Vaccines won't protect a baby from ineffective parenting ( smoke in face) I concur with bad environment, but disagree that a vaccine would have protected a baby completely from whooping cough... To many variables with respect to vaccines. You care for that baby enough to be mad about his parent's treatment. I guess that has to be sorted out at your end.... I really think that American law should require vaccinations in every case except extreme allergy. The first amendment of the constitution protects citizen rights to observe and practice their religion as they see fit EXCEPT in the case where doing so will harm another person or their property. It's been shown by thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies that refusing to vaccinate yourself or your child doesn't just harm the unvaccinated individual, but indirectly harms the young, old, sick, or immunocompromised.

The exemptions that annoy me the most, are for religion. As if that makes one less infection. Plus it is highly discriminatory, to make a favorable set of laws for a particular group in society. They shouldn't even be arpund vaccinated children, the risks are still there. Herd immunity is only an effective method for unvaccinated children inna populus that is LARGELY vaccinated. My sister was born with underdeveloped lungs and a compromised immune system, if an unvaccinated child gave her whooping cough she could very reasonably die from it. She had an allerguc reaction to one vaccine, and we still got her vaccinated for everything else we possible could because my mom has been in healthcare for 20yrs and knows the hieghtened risks for her. You don't want to vaccinate your child? That's your choice, I don't respect it, but it IS your choice. You don't, however, get to choose to nearly kill other peoples children by bringing your unvaccinated child around them. Murdering someone elses child is NOT a choice an antivaxxer gets to make. Or at least they shouldnt be allowed to, yet they are. I would have sued them into the ground had this been me. If the child had died, I would've tried them for murder. I am 54. When I was 19, I got whopping cough. In Canada I had to self quarantine. I was extremely ill. I had collapsed in the threshold of our front door, still in my winter coat and boots, with my arm stretched out over my head, still holding my doctor's note and prescription. That morning I thought I was getting a common cold. By 11 am I spiked a fever and cabbed to my doctor to get a note for work. 2pm I was on a buss on my way home. I don't remember the last leg of my buss ride or walking the 2 blocks home. When my mom came home at tpm, that's how she found me and immediately called an ambulance. I was in the hospital for 3 days and spent another 12 day, yes 12 days, in bed so sick and coughing so hard I cracked 3 ribs. If I had been a child or baby, I am sure I would have died in the first 24 hrs. Get vaccinated. I was in fact fully vaccinated. But remember Whooping cough vaccines are effective, but not perfect. The infection is usually not as bad for people who have gotten vaccinated against whooping cough but still get sick. In vaccinated people who get whooping cough: The cough usually won't last as many days. However, you may still get very sick. Having said that, most often, they are effective and my situation shouldn't be used to not get you and your children vaccinated. Also, as an adult, you still need to update most vaccinations. Very few vaccines are life long.

In the early seventies my family lived in the valley portion of an huge city. Four high schools were shut down from measles out break. Then it hit the grade schools. All schools closed. Schools and buses sanitize. Barely a week after every one returned to school the downtown schools were hit by chicken pox and mumps. Two weeks later it made it's way to the valley. School superintendents were wondering how?? The culprit. Ten non vaccinated kids came back from California carriers. Four related. These ten also came down and three nearly died. @@ilovemywiggy8436 Because they attended three of the four. That's how. They all rode school buses like every student did. Buses used for field trips. Buses that weren't cleaned and washed until the end of the day. That's how. Now you have students who were in sports competitions. Those exposed and not even aware have just now given to other athletes and their families. It takes just one but then you have ten unvaccinated who had no say in that matter not even aware. Those of vaccinated who did contract didn't have it as bad or severely. Unvaccinated out numbered vaccinated at the times with excuses of religion. I went through three epidemics due to unvaccinated. Measles, chicken pox and mumps. Schools were closed. By 1979 if you weren't vaccinated you were home schooled. It costs school districts thousands of dollars, school levies were voted in to help offset. Now if you are not vaccinated, unless you have a letter from your pastor, priest or religious leader or doctor citing allergic to an ingredient your child is not allowed. That excuse companies making money off of it and our kids are healthy no longer cut it here nor in my home town and that includes COVID vaccinations. See the schools here priority education and health over personal views. My opinion is this. These vaccines stopped deadly diseases from the forties and fifties when they were claiming lives of babies and kids. Polio being the worst. Did I hate getting my shots? Hell yes. But my parents born in the thirties who watched these killers claim lives told us this, a few seconds of pain out weighs watching us fight for our lives if it affected us as bad. It killed me watching my babies get those first shots and every time, but my babies NEVER contracted any when a small break out amongst those unvaccinated broke out. They didn't attend the schools so school continued. If you want to remain unvaccinated. Hey no skin of me or my adult kids or grandson however you're exposing innocent people with weak immune systems and that's when I say people like you deserve to get every add chewing. I'm aware there are side effects to almost every medication, but you need to way the odds. My parents did not run to the Dr. Everytime us kids got something my mom was a big believer in natural remedies and letting your body fight off infections, but she was also a realist and if your not getting better or if you seem to be getting worse then she would give us medicine or take us to the Dr. Your health is the most important thing. Do not stand on your principals at the risk of your kids health. If you have kids, they must always come first. Make educated decisions, don't rely on what other people tell you. Do your own research, Modern medicine has come a long way. People live longer lives due to better food and modern medicine. Getting my daughter vaccinated was hard because the needles and upset baby obviously. However, I'd never regret it. Not only am I keeping her safe, but also another parent's child.

I know of a little girl that contracted measles because she herself was too young to be vaccinated or had a condition that made her unable to recieve the vaccination and got in contact with an older unvaccinated child. Long story short: The older kid was able to fight it off without bigger issues but the little girl ended up with meningitis as her parents had to watch her bodily functions slowly fade away until they made the choice to stop the machines that kept her alive. Your child might end up being fine without a vaccine but they could end up causing misery to countless families without even knowing.

My SIL gave birth at Christmas last year. Her and my brother laid down the law that we all had to get a Tdap shot before coming to their house for Christmas in case she gave birthright before or right after. We are all vaccinated from childhood but boosters are good. Several of us also got flu shots and covid boosters (except my other brother who is a covidiot and has had it twice and still cannot smell or taste right three years later). Get vaccinated to protect those who cannot be protected. More story: Christmas morning my sister's bf tested positive for covid (even vaxxed to the gills). My sister and parents ended up with it too by the next couple days. During Christmas morning we all wore masks and stayed away from the expectant parents as much as possible. I was in charge of handing presents to everyone since I had had little contact with the bf/my sister and have always been super safe about covid and frequently used hand sanitizer during the handoffs. We still made and ate Christmas dinner. The bf and sister went to a hotel that night and their room remained closed. The day after Christmas my SIL went into labor (claims it was the stress of her or my brother getting covid before she went into labor and making the delivery worse at the hospital (covid patients deliver in the ER and if my brother had it he would be turned away and not allowed in for the birth. Still a strict hospital:)). That morning my parents and other brother packed up and drove home for safety. My mom sad she wouldn't meet her newborn granddaughter even through a window. She cleaned the covid room and sheets before leaving (may have been why they got it 😢). I stayed to care for their dog (live near them). I sanitized the entire house, dishes, towels, sheets, everything while wearing a mask. I stayed in the basement guest quarters as much as possible. A couple days later they were released from the hospital. I left a few hours before they came home sanitizing behind me as I left. I thankfully didn't get sick so I was indeed the best choice to clean the house and care for their dog. Everyone is fine now and the baby is healthy, happy, vaccinated for everything she can be, and almost 9 months old. Vaccinations are definitely important as is being careful and caring for others health and not just your own.

This actually happened in Chicago suburbs- anti vax family on my sons team returned from vacation in California. They brought back whooping cough from their antivax relatives. It spread among the teammates- I got it with bronchitis but survived. Two infants at a day care did not.

I got kicked out of school in middle school bc my dad refused to get the mandated vaccines. I’m thankful my mom took me to get them instead (they were divorced) bc she didn’t realize he was refusing I get them.

One thing I’ll never understand is why people who are sick go out in public for non-emergency reasons and act like they are completely healthy. Like no my brother - who knew he was sick but swore it was only allergies because he was vaccinated - decided to socialise with my entire family which caused me then 1month old baby boy, my daughter, myself and my husband to all get sick. We took him at his word but then when we needed up sick I demanded a covid test from him….well turns out he had covid and he gave it to us. Vaccines work for some illnesses but they don’t cure/prevent everything.

We are so removed from when these diseases ran rampant through the population but for babies under two years old whooping is very deadly. The coughing spasms are violent enough to cause brain damage.

I had whooping cough when i was 4 months. My sister (vaccinated) had a mild cold, turns out it wasnt and she brought it home from nursery. I was in the ICU for 3 months. If a family member visited with sick, unvaccinated child around my new born baby I'd make it clear they were at fault and completely cut them out

My great aunt told us about all her classmates that had died from Whooping Cough. She survived but only barely. Her hair turned from red to jet black. All anyone has to do is walk through an old cemetery to see the devastation wrought on families by disease. These are diseases we now have vaccines for. And if you've ever known someone who survived, it's easy to see the lifelong damage. One of my cousins survived Polio. She had to become a ward of the state due to her disabilities. Ive never understood the selfishness of antivax people. We have ample evidence going back almost 100 yrs proving these vaccines work and are safe. I feel very privileged to have been born in a time where we don't have to die from these devastating diseases.

Its crazy how people like this actually exist and then let their sick kids get everyone else sick.

I caught whooping cough as an adult from an outbreak in Seattle due to anti-vaxxing parents 🙃 I was already passionate about the issue, but that made it VERY personal
