▪ Nitrofurantoin is a bacterial cell wall inhibitor. It is used for uncomplicated UTI such as cystitis only. It covers E. coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, S. aureus, and Enterococcus. Nitrofurantoin can cause Optic neuritis, hepatotoxicity, peripheral neuropathy, pulmonary toxicity and hemolytic anemia.
▪ Nitrofurantoin should be taken with food to prevent nausea, cramping. Common SIDE EFFECTS include gastrointestinal upset, headache, rash, and brown urine discoloration which is harmless. Nitrofurantion is contraindicated in patients with creatinine less than 60ml/mint, history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction, and during pregnancy.
