I did this today at the range, all my shots were really low from my aiming point. I realized I was jerking the gun down in anticipation of the recoil. I tried a few shots where I pulled the trigger really slow and let the firing surprise me and my shots were almost dead on my aiming point. Towards the end of my range time, I noticed I was hitting a lot closer to my aiming point.

Anticipation does not always dip the muzzle down. Many shooters "heal" the grip, which causes the muzzle to raise. If you have four shooters on the range you may see four different kinds of anticipation. Some shooters actually close their eyes just before the gun goes off in anticipation. Nothing is absolute!!

I am trying to fix this. I actually close my eyes but by the end of my sessions, I’m on point. It’s the first 20 minutes or so that I need to get “warmed up” especially with indoor ranges. Really trying to fight this because I love shooting

Thinking you pulled the trigger and nothing happens (not when you actually pull the trigger, which can be a misfire) is also a symptom of recoil anticipation. It’s a more extreme flinch.

so, what are the drills to remove anticipation?
@marsoelflaco5722
@marsoelflaco5722 4 года назад
Try mixing "dummy" rounds with live rounds in your magazine. If you are flinching/anticipating the gun will dip as it goes "click". This will make you more conscious of the flinch and make your trigger press more deliberate. Over time/practice, the flinch will go away. Also, try wearing ear plugs along with ear muffs. Sometimes the bang makes shooters subconsciously flinch, even when they know that the gun is going to go off. Remember, shooting requires concentration, patience and discipline. It's very satisfying when it all comes together! ✌👍

Yes even experienced shooters flinch and we all must train to adapt and overcome. Using double action revolvers chambering an occasional dud cartridge in a full cylinder will indicate whether or not there is flinch. So old fashioned 'fudd' guns still are useful after all. And S&W offers the best at this time.
@davidhoffman6980
@davidhoffman6980 10 месяцев назад
That's fine but you don't need a double action revolver for that. You can put snap caps in the magazine of an auto-loader. It gets the exact same effect.
@richardkluesek4301
@richardkluesek4301 10 месяцев назад
@@davidhoffman6980 Snap caps are a great training aid. A revolver having 5 or 6 chambers, sometimes a few more, versus an autoloader with just one, allows repeat trigger cycling. An autoloader must have a da capaiblity for the same effect. DA to SA are differnt pulls. And then the slide must be cycled for recocking on striker fired, and SA, modes and as you suggest to feed more snap caps from the magazine. Then ya gotta bend down and retrieve them from the floor. Good belly exercise. So the revolver is a more convenient training instrument.
@davidhoffman6980
@davidhoffman6980 10 месяцев назад
@@richardkluesek4301 If you use a snap cap in an auto-loader, then after the click, you simply need to rack the slide, or you can practice a malfunction clearing drill. This is not so burdensome that it makes training this way impractical. One needn't go buy a revolver just to train this way. I personally have a revolver and I think they are great but most people don't have revolvers and I'm always weary of expensive training advice.
@richardkluesek4301
@richardkluesek4301 10 месяцев назад
@@davidhoffman6980 I have and use revolvers because these are among the types of firearms I like. As with autoloaders there are features and benefits common to both as well as advantages and drawbacks unique to each. The praises and faults of either type can be cited and operators can exclusively choose one or the other or deploy both, with an understanding of those positives and negatives. And then there can be evaluation of sub types in both, for example, in autoloadrs, SA vs DA, vs DAO, striker fired vs hammer fired, polymer vs metal, and in revolvers SA vs DA vs bobbed hammer, long barrel vs snub nosed, different alloys, and a plethora of grips. Finally, calibers, some of us swear by a 1 and only while others use many.

Well timed and consistent recoil anticipation can actually be a speed shooters best friend. There’s good flinch and bad flinch. But please disregard this comment if you’re a beginner.

Funny how anticipation is seen in so may different aspects depending on the instructor. Low, Low left, High, or High Left. Flinch and anticipation could mean that a shooter knows they tend to shoot low because of their trigger finger, so they raise the gun early as they shoot, thus shooting high.

The way i got over recoil was shooting heavy loads and paying attention to my actions. Then got my head around. This is just what it takes too shoot this. After a long string of 300 win mag in a tunnel one night, it just kinda hit me. After that, it was much better all around for me shooting. And dont tell yourself how bad it is. It's harsh and loud, but it ain't going to mame you.

I too was hoping for that. But he did say what to do: just keep shooting and it will go away by itself. THEN, there are some techniques you can use to mitigate it. Interesting.

TL;DW just let the gun rock and roll. It's chemically impossible for you to counteract the recoil in time. You'll just pull down before the shot breaks and shoot low.

Nice work sir. Understanding the difference between shooting and fighting is critical. Some of the manipulation techniques do not crossover. I recently read the most valuable book on the subject of instructing and performing the "fight" skills. Google "Beyond the Muzzle; The Firearms Instructor & Shooter Development Guide". Author is a retired deadly force instructor (Don't remember his name...sorry). What I learned from this book was invaluable to me as an instructor and shooter. My next class was "night and day" difference. I only wish I could take an in-person class with these methods being taught.
