Earlier this year my wife and I spent a week at Gettysburg. We took a day trip down to Antietam and walked the ground you show here in this video. It was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. Having seen those pictures of Bloody Lane numerous times I was particularly touched to walk there. At one point, near where the stairs come down into the lane from the parking area our dog cowered, with her tail between her legs and would not move away from us. I know some may think I'm crazy, but the spirits of the brave men who fought and died there at times come back to visit.

The work of the American Battlefield Trust in returning these sites to their historic condition is so crucial to the study of history. As I stand in the Cornfield I can now experience the same landscape that my ancestor viewed. Thanks for everything you do, and keep up the amazing work!

Hi Garry, many thanks for this video! The canteen of a US soldier found its way to me in Berlin/Germany. It was picked up right after the battle of Antietam. I could make out a name stamped on the strap, hidden in a knot. A Union soldier named LONARGAN lost his canteen, but hopefully not his life in Antietam... I also have an original Civil War newspaper with a report of the battle of Antietam, written in German.

Thanks for this overview. Hadn't seen it when it was posted but now timing is perfect as an accompaniment to Vermilya's "That Field of Blood." Regarding Battlefield Visit codes of conduct that Gary mentioned, I liked the way the docents as the Carnton plantation at Franklin Battlefield said it: The pointed out that hundreds of men had passed away in the Carnton house, and that many people had been enslaved there, so they asked visitors to refrain from joking and to respect the dignity of those who had suffered.

Awesome video. I love your passion and energy. Farming fact. Corn at the time was planted in a grid pattern of squares. Each row was two feet apart so a horse can fit through it to cultivate each row to keep the weeds down. This causes raised rows on each row of corn, which made it really hard to march across. Love what you guys do. Keep it coming. 😃

In the form of feedback which you requested, I am fascinated by the fact that on many of the battlefields, actual pieces of field artillery are the exact same ones that were there during the battle in the very position you see them while you are visiting. I wish there were some central body of information that would tell us which pieces these are. It would add so much to the immediacy of standing there.

I recently discovered that my great-great-great grandfather was with Alabama 6th Infantry, Co G, and supposedly was killed during the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. He was supposedly in his late 60s and was a sniper/sharpshooter. One of his sons was killed earlier in the summer. I have walked that battlefield and never knew I may have walked past the place where he died. Or near his remains, if they’re still there. He was never recovered and burial location unknown. (It is also unfortunate he was fighting on the wrong side of the war, too.)

At 4:47, the soldier with the baggy pants, jacket buttoned completely to his neck, and slouch hat, standing with head slightly bowed, close to the left wheel of the cannon is possibly John A. Fairman. A horse's head is pictured directly behind Fairman. Gary's point about the thickly-positioned rebel dead is a good one. The scene was likely created by Union troops who were occupying the lane after the rebels retreated.
