Haldol did this to me. My head was turning left and it looked like I was possessed and looking like I was trying to break my own neck. I took muscle relaxers from the nurses which calmed it down in 30 minutes. Felt like hell. Terrible feeling

Agreed, Geodon did the same thing to me

They shouldve given you a 50 mg shot of benadryl through an IV like they did me. It went away immediately!

This happened to me when I was prescribed Geodon aka Ziprasidone! Very scary and dangerous! I was in the ER waiting room for 7 hours!!! It felt like my neck was breaking and my mouth was locked wide open! I stopped the medication immediately after they gave me a shot of 50 mg benadryl! But stopping the Geodon put me in the worst withdrawal but I refused to take geodon again I was also previously in a physically abusive relationship where I suffered severe head trauma from the beatings.

Great presentation. However I would amend this to say no alterations in temperature (rather than vital signs) if trying to distinguish dystonia from NMS. The pain/distress caused by acute dystonic reactions unequivocally leads to alterations in HR and BP.

I have movement if the tongue and lips, pacing and balancing. But a lot better than i was. I would like to know if i can stay with my medication or I should change? Basically to know if some level if distonia and akhatisia can be tolerate, or if the shouldn't be tolerate at all?

Methocarbamal did this to me. It did it to my back and all limbs, it felt like i could not breathe or move my arms or legs without EXSTREME effort. The not breathing part had me feeling like i was dieing. I repeatedly hit the call button at the ER. I was so terrifiing to be announcing your dieing and everyone looking at you like your crazy.

I'm on antipsychotics and get episodes where it's difficult to move my eyes down but it's accompanied by intense brain fog. I remember the episodes and get agitated but reading and even comprehending speech can be difficult. I'm wondering if that's an alteration in consciousness and what does it mean? Is this dystonia or is it something else?

Although it can be used to treat neuroleptic malignant syndrome, it can actually raise the risk of tardive dyskinesia.

How could this not occur on quetiapine?
@fondapwatson
@fondapwatson 3 года назад
I've read it does. My son with autism has been coping with this for years. Haldol, Abilify, Respiridone and now Zyprexa. We've found that some seizure meds have increased the incidence, including Epidiolex. Doctors seem to have very little experience with this, especially in the non-verbal and disabled population.

Via masking with sedation be touching on the histamine receptors and having a lower affinity for the dopamine 2 receptor.

Yet again I disagree these symptoms can develop years later!!!!!! People are being lied to
@leoustinov537
@leoustinov537 2 года назад
When these symptoms occur years later, it is a separate medical condition called Tardive Dyskinesia. The mechanism is similar but it is a different condition. In case of development of a tardive dyskinesia the patient might be switched to either quetiapine or clozapine from his or her regular antipsychotics. (The latter one requires a close bloodwork monitoring and is hence not our favorite option). Leo U, PharmD student

Why do we even bother still prescribing the old dopamine receptor antagonist first generation anti psychotics?
@rafael9428
@rafael9428 Год назад
@@leoustinov537 Not exactly, you must stop taking them well at least that's in my case, somehow switching off to new medications will only worsen so tapper it down , i still have it and developed it into tremors
