The second, narrower duandao I presented is lighter than the first with the teeth down the back. I don’t have the exact weight, but it is lighter than a fuller length Dao. Though this is not always the case, being shorter, it is easier to wield a heavier duandao than a full length Dao of the same weight. Thanks for your support!

Great video as always, very informative about the historical disputes that happened in China at the time! Quick question out of curiosity though, is the second saber lighter as it seems or does it feel heavier like the oxtail saber in the beginning of the video? Thanks in advance!

Beautiful pieces. I wonder if the heavy sword was for executions. It’s easy to test for gold. Believe it or not you can get a cheap test kit on amazon. The hardenable steel might only be 3/4” in the blade maybe less. I like leaving nicks in the edge as battle scars. No need to ever remove them. Great video of awesome antiques. Thank you.

Thanks. You are spot on about the blade damage, no real question it is from combat. Any sword might have been used in the moment to execute a criminal. But Chinese executioners swords are a very specific design, they are straight bladed and have a demon head pommel. They are rare encountered as Chinese tended not to collect or preserve them for karmic reasons.

Hi ❤️ I have two questions. I would love to know the answers from your point of view if possible ❤️. Are Mongol blades similar to Chinese blades ? And my final question, there's a lot of controversial between Katana and Chinese blades. From your personal opinion, is the blade what does matter or is it the one who controls it in a battle. I really like how the blade doesn’t have any fullers and not even a false edge, so that people can enjoy the aesthetics of the smooth wedge cross section blade. On a tangent, how long could Qing military sabres get for cavalry/mounted infantry troops? There was one Huawengang-style construction sabre with an 89 cm blade in an old article - was it supposed to be a parade example or a genuine fighting sabre?

Nice short sword. Most dont realize that short swords are oft the same weight as a full size sword. Which is really one of the best ways to answer that age old question of "when does a long dagger become short sword?". If its heavy enough to oppose a medium to full size weapon then its usually a short sword.

Oh one more question. I love Chinese blades but always wondered why some blades have a small curve on the handler. Than you ❤️❤️❤️

The answer is no real mystery, a curved grip helps prevent the hand from slipping off the end of the hilt. Many have a flared pommel for the same reason.

Were the really short ones ever used in combat? Or were those more like souvenirs? I have one here with a shorter but otherwise similar profile (to the "more standard", slender one) that's 62cm total, with a ray- or sharkskin grip wound with thick brass wire. It has a reinforced tip but it's not very thick overall.

The word "Chinese" is really meaningless when applied to ancient East Asia. There were MANY different races and countries there. They spoke different languages with very different tonal systems. They used very different weapons and even had their own ways of refining metals and crafting weapons. LOL
