Not that you are a dummy, but in this video, I tried to put together a primer course on early Colts. We feature military Colts from the Dragoon, to the Artillery models. And then some commercial pocket pistol variations as well as double actions. We give price ranges and are open to inquiries should you be looking to add one of these beauties to your collection. They should be added to our website soon!

On the Single Action Army what you call a loading lever is usually called a loading gate.

There used to be a great strictly 'antique' gun show at the old Sunnybrook Ballroon in Pottstown,PA. I remember tables of old guns just like that.

The converted pistol would have had a loading lever that was removed as it was no longer needed.
@บัวสีโรเจอร์-ศ9ฝ
I'm always amazed at the fit and finish of firearms that were destined for military service, before the days of Parkerising. The gorgeous polished blue finish would have suffered from corrosive primers, the first fall into a stagnant puddle or even nervous sweaty hands. Keeping the gun in good order was half the battle. Nice selection Tom, keep 'em coming.👍

Thanks for posting this video on the early Colt line of SAA's and the one DA. I know you are a German military (Walther/Luger etc.) fan and all the those videos are 'entertaining' and informative but for a poor peasant like myself, collecting any of those WWII arms is out of my mad money league. I have however over the past few years taken an interest in 'reproductions' of Colt style 1873 SAA's. I have a Ruger 4.75 barrel in 22 and a 4.75 barrel Cimarron Pistolero Nickel Plated in 357 ordered (pick up April 2). I would have gone for a more original 45lc but I understand the ammo is hard to find now. It's great to see you expand outside of your circle of historical interest and cover other categories of military and civilian memorabilia. From what I have read, Colt wasn't the only supplier of military grade weapons in the 1800's, Remington was a supplier of handguns.

The 5 1/2 inch models with multiple serial numbers were called ALTERED models, the reason that Artillery model was used is that they were issued to the Artillery first after they were Altered......also a Colt in .44/40 is a frontier or peacemaker, and was a Civilian firearm, .Colts with US inspectors marks are 45 calibre, UNTIL .38 double action revolvers. Now I will stand corrected, but that is what I read as a Young fellow, in various reference books

The Paterson was made in....yep, you guessed it....Paterson, NJ. Colt's first plant was there, not Harford, as the "Patent Arms Company" of Paterson NJ. Also the military guns were always 45 Colt. The "Frontier Six Shooters" were 44-40. I guess they didn't want to call them "Single Action Armys" since those were all 45s. A very nice collection!
@heiner71
@heiner71 6 месяцев назад
The Frontier Six-Shooters were marked as such from the factory, They are all in 44-40 to go together with the Winchester lever action rifles (also 44-40) of the time. So the frontier guys only needed one type of ammunition to carry along. As for the number on the loading gate. It's an assembly number that should match the assembly number found on the frame. This assembly number will be found on the frame's bottom flat. You need to remove the trigger guard to see it.

Some of the early ones even tho they have no U.S. marking could have been Military guns belonging to State Militia or Officer private purchase, many of these would not have had additional markings added before issue.

Not all of them had the same finish, my 49 is brass without plating and is a lesser produced cylinder without a roll stamp.

Pre-1890 guns loaded with loose black powder are the only ones that we can buy without a license here in Europe. Here in Sweden they're actually exempted from the gun law, so as far as I understand we could even carry them, while carrying is totally illegal with any modern gun.

@@danrathcke can’t be that, the 1862 police cylinder has flutes. The one on the video has a smooth rebated cylinder, making it a pocket navy model. The conversions are loosely referred to as 1871/1872 conversions. In this case in 38 rimfire.

Something not right with the supposed military colt,the were only 45 colt,and were inspection by Reynaldo A Carr and no one else. And after the military acquired Schofields they only ammo they use was made for the smith and Wesson because it was a shorter case.
