Antique Drill Press RESTORATION - Part 1/3, inspired by @Hand Tool Rescue
In a homage to @hand tool rescue Uncle Al restores a blacksmiths post drill that he picked up at auction. This antique drill press restoration starts with breaking down the self advancing pillar drill so that it can be cleaned because this antique post drill is in incredible condition under the layers of crud that has accumulated on it over the past century.

I'm envious of the condition. I redid one of these a couple years ago. I bought it off of a fella who had it outside as yard art for 40+ years. Nothing moved. Wooden bits were long gone. Come to find out, the ratchet arm was only half there. I was able to come up with a replacement ratchet arm thankfully and I'm quite proud of how it turned out. The support for the lower table (where you put the bits you wish to drill) was broken sometime in its 100+ years of existence and was repaired by a blacksmith who formed a piece of metal that matched every curve and was held in place by hot iron rivets. It adds a little something to the story of the piece as its repaired in such a way that requires skills not possessed by many these days. Sort of a dying art. Anyway, end rant. Thank you for posting this video. I love these old contraptions and im always happy to see one get rescued

Awesome. I've got a post drill sitting on my drive right now. I have used oven cleaner on heavy caked on grease and it melts it like butter, give it a try sometime maybe it will work for you. Best regards.

I'm currently in the process of restoring a bench top self advancing hand cranked drill for the Shedquarters. I'm doing it on the sly when I have to stay back at work. The only markings on it are Britton made. Works great with very little wear.

This looks exactly like the one I just found. However the only marking on it says No. 00 and then there in another that says 318. I have no idea who made it. I haven't watched the entire video yet, but who made the one you have??

I have this exact same drill, salvaged from my grandfather's tool shed. It's entirely seized now, having been stored in a not entirely weather proof building by the sea, but I seem to have a vague memory of it turning. I really want to get it working again!! So, I guess I should drown it in WD-40. My farmer/mechanic friends swear by PB Blaster. But, I haven't gotten around to either yet. . .

@@DirtyShedCreations I'll keep you posted! I helped my parents clean out the tool shed last spring so they could finally take the building down, it being beyond repair. My grandfather passed in '04 and hadn't been able to get out to the shed for at least a decade previous, so things were pretty bad out there. Sea air and rain are hard on things. Lots of drawers and buckets of chunky rust soup, but I did salvage some things. Nearly 16 tons of rusty iron went to the salvage yard, though. Even at only a penny a pound, they ended up paying us for the dumpster rental!! Grampa was a welder and dynamite tech after WWII, and always saw things for what he could make out of them, rather than what they were in "reality". Anyway, finding your video inspired me and I finally got the drill out of the back of my car and into a tote in my barn and soaked it down with WD40. I'll reapply every so often, so come spring, when it's warmer, it should be ready for some Albow Grease ;) ---Sorry for the long story. . .

and to add: Do ya'll have "whiting" over there? Paint it on, brush it off, "REALLY" soaks deep in wood to bring oil/grease out of it. Works great for vintage gunstocks and other oily woods

Great shout on the whiting, I think Al mentions this as an option in a future instalment, but ruled it out from a cost angle using it on a piece of wood that big.

Where’s part 3 ??? Boiling water 💧 w/ dawn dish soap 🧼 or couple gallons of gas ⛽️ because Acetone crazy Money 💴 here . I have used diesel there’s a little film left behind . I have also use brake clean or carb clean but that gets expensive per can depending on how much you’re trying to clean maybe you can hot tank it like they do engine blocks that might work better
